The Deal In The Shadow

The air at the LEAH private rooftop was taut as I stepped into the private lounge.

William sprawled across a black leather couch, his shirt half-buttoned. In front of him, a glass center table held a gun.

“This is the first time I’ve seen a woman not flinch at the sight of a gun,” he said, his gaze flickering toward me as I sat gently beside him.

After many years, Alexandra Sterling betrayed me… I still can’t get over it,” he said softly, tucking the gun into the back of his trousers.

“I understand,” I replied calmly.

He glared at me, a sharp, fleeting look. “I still can’t believe Victor would betray his wife. He took after his father.”

He leaned closer, staring into my eyes. His eyes were red and bulging from whiskey, but he still maintained his stance, controlled but dangerous.

“I can see myself in those eyes,” he said, his voice gravelly as he stared into my eyes.

“Starting from scratch,” he continued, “I was tired of working for him endlessly! After he took everything I had, because I was surpassing him in the game”.

William’s words dripped with hatred for the Sterlings. But hearing him, I realize, perhaps the Sterlings had motives far deeper than I had imagined.

“Are they in any way connected to the downfall of my father’s company?” I asked, searching his eyes for an answer.

“You’ll get to know that later. For now, let’s focus on the real matter,” he said.

My heart pounded. My veins felt weak, but I forced myself to think. No, it’s not possible. The Sterlings could never have had a hand in my father’s failed company.

“The government project is worth $1 billion,” William snapped me out of my thoughts. “He will make a $200 million advance payment. The remaining will be made as the work progresses.”

“How much are you planning to invest?” I asked.

“The total project comes to around $700 million,” he continued, leaving a profit margin of $300 million. “If I invest with you, I will take 40% of the profit,” he said, glaring at me, waiting for my answer.

“Okay,” I said.

“The problem here is… I plan to invest $350 million. The government releases $200 million.”He leaned closer, his voice sharp. “How will you get the remaining $150 million?”

He paused for a moment, letting the question hang in the air.

“Contractor competing must pass the pilot project,” he added.

I’ve done many pilot projects in the past and won contracts for the Sterlings. Big contracts like this always come with rigorous testing before they’re awarded.

“I know you’re a genius at defending pilot projects… but what about the financial aspect?” he asked.

“I’ll handle the pilot project,” I said confidently. “And half of the money will be ready in five days,” I said.

William’s gaze flickered in shock.“That’s about $75 million,” he muttered. “Don’t tell me you robbed a bank, too.”

“His girlfriend’s birthday may be hosted at the Aurielius Events in the next three days, I said gently. They were planning to bid on the most expensive jewelry from the Sovereign Auction. I would make sure it was worth it.” I said.

He sighed and leaned back into the leather couch. “No matter how loaded I am with rifles, I would never be stupid enough to hurt my woman.”

“See you in five days,” I said and walked out of the lounge.

My stomach rumbled as I slid back into the car. Even after the massive plate of food I had swallowed before leaving the Sterlings, it felt like I hadn’t eaten in days. My eyes flicked to my phone, resting in the glovebox. The thought of Aurielius Event and the expensive jewelry crossed my mind, I didn’t have much time.

I put a call through to Mary.

“Hello, ma,” her voice dripped from the other end of the line.

“Send me the G***l and I*******m handle of Aurielius Events.”

“Okay, ma… but what are you using it for?”

This time, I felt my patience snap at how Mary always poked her nose into my business.

“Send me what I asked for, now!” I yelled, my voice sharp.

I drove toward Moonville Manor.

The air inside the Moonville Manor was idyllic, almost enticing. Even though it had been a while since my last visit, the crystal ceramic vase behind the windows glittered, and every other modern décor and artifact remained perfectly in place.

Part of the inheritance my mother had left for me just six years ago before she passed, victor didn’t know about it, he hardly even knows about me, he never cared.

I dashed into the bedroom and opened a drawer. A sapphire necklace, a flawless diamond, matching earrings, and a bracelet glittered under the room’s bright light. It was part of the jewels my mom had gotten for me, but truthfully, I wasn’t a fan of overly shiny things. Still, I took a picture; it gleamed crisply in the frame.

Mary’s messages popped up on the screen. She had already sent Aurielius’ social media handle and G***l. Without wasting a minute, I drafted my message.

  • The Wife He Shouldn't Have Betrayed    I Thought She Was Gone

Victor POVMy heart thumped hard against my ribcage. My body trembled as the image replayed in my head, my wife struggling with the gun, surrounded by those men… the sound of gunshots echoing over and over.“Oh, poor Lysandra… she didn’t deserve to die like this,” Selena wailed, collapsing to the floor. But her voice felt distant.I should have stayed. I should have gotten out of the car.But instead, my hands had tightened on the steering wheel……and I drove off. At the sound of gunshots. My breath grew uneven. What if she was the one who got shot?My hand shook as I opened the tracking app I had secretly placed on her.The location was still there, the same spot, the gunshot scene.“I’ll be back,” I muttered and dashed out of the mansion. “No, Victor, don’t go!” Selena cried, but I didn’t listen. The night was dark and silent. I parked the car near the spot. My chest tightened as I stepped out, gripping my torchlight.I remembered this place clearly. I ran toward it, but then I st

  • The Wife He Shouldn't Have Betrayed    Left With Nothing

The night air was sharp, cutting against my skin.Earlier, the Sterling matriarch had summoned me. Her message was brief and menacing. "You are wanted at the Sterlings. Don’t keep us waiting!"The mansion loomed ahead grand and imposing, but my instincts screamed this wasn’t one of their usual manipulative meetings.Outside, I let fear show on my face, the kind they expected, but inside, I was ready. The air in the vast sitting room was tense… dangerous.Alexander Sterling. Victor’s father sat at the edge of the leather couch, his gray head bowed, both hands gripping his staff for support. Beside him stood Seraphina, her hands clasped behind her back as she paced slowly across the room.“I heard you won’t be getting contracts for the Sterlings anymore,” Alexander said, his voice low and wheezing as he slowly raised his head. “Instead, you plan to build your father’s company. Is that true?” he asked, his gray eyes flickering with anger.“Yes,” I replied calmly.“How dare you!” Seraphi

  • The Wife He Shouldn't Have Betrayed    Regaining My Strength

The Aurelius event hall was filled with billionaires and investors; the air felt heavy, corporate, and controlled. The dim lighting worked in my favor, casting shadows over me as I sat quietly behind the crowd, hidden beneath the black sheer covering that made me almost unrecognizable. From my vantage point, I could see them clearly. Selena sat close to Victor, her arm wrapped around his thigh as if she owned him. "All attention, please," the host's smooth voice echoed across the hall as he stood confidently in his pristine suit. Behind him, a large display was covered with a red curtain.“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the highlight of tonight’s Aurelius exclusive auction.”The room fell silent.“And now,” his voice rose slightly, “we present our special piece for the night.” He gestured, and the curtain slid open, revealing my diamond sapphire necklace.A wave of gasps filled the room.“Oh my God…” “Wow…” “Darling, make sure we take this home!”Selena tightened her hold on Victo

  • The Wife He Shouldn't Have Betrayed    The Missing Space

Victor POVMy skin felt hot from inside, even with the cold air brushing against me as I sat alone on the balcony of my mansion. The city lights stretched endlessly in front of me, but my mind wasn’t on the view. The woman who loved me unconditionally, the one who helped build my empire from scratch, but now she said she was done. Instead of continuing with me, she chose to go back and rebuild her father’s company.A faint scoff escaped my lips. I knew the kind of woman she was. The type who could turn nothing into something. If she truly decided to pursue this, she would succeed. And that meant one thing: she could become my competition. My grip tightened around the glass in my hand as a quiet fear crept into my chest. I need to act fast.“Ohh, this is beautiful!”Selena’s cheerful voice broke through my thoughts. she walked over and casually sat on my lap like she always did.“Look at this,” she said, showing me her phone. “The jewelry Aurielius is auctioning tomorrow. They tagged us.

“Don’t worry. She won’t be waking up soon.”Selena’s voice drifted into my ears as I slowly came out of a long, heavy sleep. My eyes opened slightly. Mary, my maid, stood beside the door in her white shirt and black pants, the Sterling household uniform. My gaze moved across the room and landed on Selena. She was sprawled on the Chanel chair beside my bed, glaring at me.“What is she doing here?” I asked hoarsely, my voice still rough with sleep as I turned to Mary.Mary lowered her head, her face buried in silence.“Oh, you’re awake,” Selena said with a smile that never reached her eyes. “I just came to have a little conversation with you… as friends. It’s been a long time since we gisted.”My chest tightened at the sight of her face.“Leave,” I ordered Mary. She quickly slipped out of the room, leaving Selena and me alone.I stared at Selena. Our eyes met—sharp and fierce. Her gaze was threatening.“How dare you invade my privacy?” I demanded, anger rising in my voice.“Privacy?” sh
