The laughter came from beneath our feet. It was faint at first, a distant, broken sound that crawled through the cracks in the floor. Then it grew louder, echoing through the hall until the women behind me began backing away.

I knew that laugh. I had heard it beside a river, beneath a willow tree, in a memory I could barely hold without feeling sick.

"Elias?" I whispered.

The laughter stopped. A second later, the silver pendant in Eve's hand shattered. She screamed and dropped it. The photograp

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything. The Mother was still speaking. Elias was shouting something. The system's warning flashed across the walls in silver letters. But all I could hear was the sound of my own heartbeat.A foreign consciousness. Inside my heart.I pressed both hands against my chest, waiting for something to move beneath my skin. Something answered. Finally.I stumbled backward. "No."The boy kneeling beside the pool lifted his head. His black eyes had turned silver."Hello, Alira."The voice came from everywhere. From the walls. From the water. From inside my own skull.I screamed. Gold light burst from my body, throwing everyone away from me. The Mother struck the far wall. Elias crashed against the stone chair. The boy disappeared beneath the water. And Kael, I didn't know when he had entered the chamber, but suddenly his arms were around me, holding me upright as my knees threatened to give way."Alira. Look at me."I couldn't. Something was crawling throu

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe. The boy standing before me had Elias's face, Elias's scar, and Elias's voice. But the Elias behind me was looking at him as though death itself had returned to collect a debt."Don't listen to him," the first Elias said. The boy smiled. "Which one?"My gaze snapped between them. Two brothers. Two bodies. One name. And apparently, one murder I couldn't remember committing.I took a step backward. "Someone had better explain what's happening before I start tearing this place apart."The boy's smile widened. "That's what she used to say."My stomach clenched. "Who?"He pointed at me. "You."The word landed with the weight of a sentence. The first Elias moved toward me, but I raised my hand."Stay there."He stopped. I hated the hurt that crossed his face, but I couldn't afford to care about it yet."You're going to answer me," I said to the boy. "Who are you?"He glanced at the man beside me. "Ask your brother.""Elias?"The first Elias dragged a ha

A second later, the silver pendant in Eve's hand shattered. She screamed and dropped it. The photograph landed faceup between us. I couldn't look away from the blood-covered knife in my younger hand."I didn't kill him," I said, though nobody had accused me.Kael's silence was worse than an accusation. I turned to him."You said I saved him.""I believed you did.""That's not what I asked."His eyes met mine. The black veins beneath his skin had disappeared, but something dark remained in his expression."I remember the river," he said. "I remember you screaming. I remember Elias telling you to

For several seconds, nobody moved. I stared at the girl standing at the entrance, at her brown eyes and the silver pendant resting against her chest. She looked like me. Not the way Aria had looked like me, with that unsettling resemblance that made me question which memories belonged to whom. This was different. Looking at her felt like looking into a mirror that remembered something I had forgotten."What did you just say?" I asked. Her expression softened. "I know. You have a thousand questions.""Try answering the one I asked."Kael stepped between us. "Don't."The girl tilted her head. "Still protecting her from the truth? After everything?""That's enough.""No, Kael. It isn't."Something in his voice made my stomach tighten. I had seen him face ancient creatures without blinking. I'd watched him stand against the Mother herself. But now, looking at this girl, he seemed afraid. Not for himself. For me.I moved around him. "Who are you?"She studied me for a long moment. "My name

The Mother screamed. Not in pain. In rage. The sound shattered the remaining glass cylinders, sending fragments across the hall. I threw my arms over my head as Kael pulled me against him, shielding me with his body. When the noise finally stopped, I lifted my head. The thousands of women were still kneeling. But something had changed. Their silver eyes had turned gold. And every single one of them was looking at me."Sister," they whispered again. My throat tightened. I'd spent my entire life believing I had nobody. My parents had loved Elira more openly. Darian had rejected me in front of an entire arena. Even when Kael held me, I sometimes wondered whether he loved me or simply recognized something ancient inside me.But these women, they looked at me as if I were the only person in the world who could understand what it meant to be created for someone else's purpose.I stepped away from Kael. The Mother watched me with murderous eyes. "What have you done?"I looked at my palm. The

Thousands of voices whispered my name. Some sounded like children. Others sounded like old women who had spent centuries crying. A few sounded exactly like me.I stood beside Kael, staring at the enormous hall beyond the open doors. Glass cylinders stretched into the distance, arranged in rows that disappeared beneath a ceiling lost in darkness. Inside each one floated a different version of my face. One girl couldn't have been older than five. Another looked almost identical to the woman who had called herself Aria. One had silver eyes. Another had black veins crawling across her throat. And one, my breath caught, she was wearing my clothes. The same torn sleeves. The same dark trousers. Even the same little scar on my left cheek that I'd gotten when I was twelve. She opened her eyes. And smiled at me. "You're late."I stumbled backward. Kael caught my arm. "Don't stare at them.""How am I supposed to do that?""By looking at me."I turned toward him. His expression was serious, but
