"Stand beside me. But you read first, and you read all of it."

Thessaly Draven did not rise from the wet stone. The torchlight shook across her silver hair, and the thirty gray figures behind her stayed on one knee.

"All of it," she said.

"Every name. Including the ones your house would rather forget."

"They are the ones I came to read."

"Then we understand each other." Seraphina's voice stayed level, though her heart was going like a fist on a door. "Get up. Nobody kneels at Blackwood's gate."

"That's his handwriting," Seraphina said. It was not a question.Tamsin stood frozen at the edge of the bed with the paper trembling in her fingers. "I don't know whose it is. I swear I don't.""Tall, slanted, dropped crossbars." Seraphina took a slow breath. "I've seen it in a ledger and on a council register. It belongs to Corvin Ashveil.""Corvin," Tamsin whispered."You've heard the name.""Of course I've heard it." Her voice cracked. "He's my grandfather."The rain tapped against the glass. Down the corridor a door slammed and a girl laughed, shrill and carefree, the sound of an ordinary Saturday night at a school that had no idea what was sitting in this room.*She is not lying,* her wolf said, low and careful. *She smells like someone who has been holding her breath for weeks.**I know.**Let her speak.*"Sit down," Seraphina said. "Tell me everything. From the beginning."Tamsin sat. She pressed the note flat against her knee and smoothed it over and over, as if she could iron

  • The Alpha Secret Obsession    Chapter 64: What Tamsin Wants

"I need to tell you something, and I need you not to hate me before I finish."Tamsin stood in Seraphina's doorway with her satchel hugged against her chest, still in her training jacket, her copper hair coming loose from its knot. The corridor lamps had been lit an hour ago, and somewhere below a first-year was practicing the same four bars of a song over and over."That's a terrible way to start a conversation," Seraphina said."I know. I rehearsed a better one and it fell apart on the stairs." Tamsin stepped inside without being asked and shut the door behind her. "Can I sit?""On the bed. The chair's covered in history notes."Tamsin sat on the edge of the narrow mattress, knees together, the satchel in her lap. Seraphina took the desk chair after moving three stacks of paper onto the floor. Rain tapped the window. On the wall above the bed, Isadora had left a sticky note stuck there days ago, a reminder in her sharp handwriting: *Drink water. You look like a ghost.*"I like you,"

  • The Alpha Secret Obsession    Chapter 63: Winter Trials

"Every pack. Every student. No exemptions, no substitutions, and no sick notes."Professor Wren read the notice aloud from the dais in the great hall, spectacles low on his nose, and the groan that rolled through three hundred students in dark jackets was loud enough to rattle the windows."The Winter Trials," he continued, unmoved, "are held each year on the first frost, as they have been for two centuries. Each pack fields a team of five. Three rounds. Tracking, endurance, and a closing bout in full form before the assembled houses."Seraphina's fork stopped halfway to her mouth."Full form," Orion said beside her, very quietly."I heard.""It might not be you.""It's a team of five. Pack Ashveil has forty students." She set the fork down. Her hand wasn't steady, and she pressed it flat against the table. "Who do you think they'll pick?""Whoever Caden picks.""Caden isn't the only one who picks."Orion didn't answer that. Across the hall, the pack tables were already loud with argu

"Is it always like this, or did I arrive on a special day?"The voice came from just behind Seraphina's shoulder, bright and a little breathless. She turned from the assignment board outside the administration wing and found a girl holding a battered suitcase in one hand and a map of the grounds in the other, upside down."Like what?" Seraphina asked."Like everyone in the courtyard is pretending not to stare at one man in a gray coat who has never once blinked." The girl tipped her chin toward the far wall, where Damian stood reading a notice with perfect calm. A ring of empty cobblestones surrounded him. "I counted. Forty-one students walked the long way around him since I came through the gate. One boy dropped his books.""That's Damian Voss.""Obviously. I read about the inquiry on the coach ride." She finally noticed the map and turned it right side up with a rueful grin. "Tamsin Frey. Transfer. I'm told I'm in the Ashveil pack, which I'm also told is a very good thing and a very

"Is this seat taken?"Damian asked it in the same voice he had used to threaten her in the quad, polite and low and perfectly friendly. He stood at the end of the second row in Professor Wren's classroom, holding a leather satchel and wearing the dark Blackwood jacket, the silver thorns gone from his collar. Somebody had pressed the jacket to a razor crease."It's taken," Seraphina said."By whom?""By Orion.""Ah." Damian looked at the empty seat on her right, the one where Orion's notebook lay open beside a half-chewed pencil. "I believe he stepped out.""He stepped out because you walked in.""Did he." Damian set his satchel on the desk and sat down in the chair beside hers. "How unfortunate. I'll apologize to him later."Seraphina counted her breaths. The classroom had fallen deathly quiet. Thirty students sat with their pens frozen, and nobody had dared whisper since the door opened. Wren stood at the chalkboard with a piece of chalk in his fist, looking like a man who had been t

Marcus stepped forward, and the lines in his face looked deeper than they had that morning."Seraphina. If she reads that register in the circle, Ashveil's name is in it.""I know.""I am aware you know. I am telling you I am not objecting." His mouth twisted. "Vesper, I assume there is a clause.""There is," Vesper said. She stood very still in her green coat, and her eyes had not left the black cloth in Thessaly's hands. "I need to read it again before moonrise. I will n
