Chapter 4: Humiliated and Hunted

The pain that tore through me echoed in Shade. It felt like my body and soul were being ripped in half. My face pressed against the ground, lungs burning with every desperate breath. My voice stuck in my throat as I writhed, nails lengthening and clawing the dirt. I felt Shade fighting to surface, my body flickering on the edge of the shift.

When the agony finally ebbed, rough hands hauled me up by the arms, my feet dragging. My ears rang; my vision blurred as I fought to stay conscious.

“Take this bitch to the dungeon. I’ll deal with her later,” the alpha’s voice sounded distant and weak, though I couldn’t tell from where.

I blacked out on the way and woke on a filthy floor reeking of piss and rot. My head throbbed; my body ached as if I’d been beaten for hours. I struggled to stand but collapsed back down, legs too weak.

“That bastard son of a bitch,” I snarled, punching the ground. “As if I wanted to be fated to an old wolf like him.”

After several tries, I managed to stand and staggered to the bars. The cell block was empty; faint light came from two distant torches. I sniffed carefully, trying to detect anything beyond the stench, but it was useless.

In my cell, I spotted an old bowl of water. My throat closed; my lips were cracked. I didn’t care if it was clean. I knelt and saw my reflection. I looked horrific. My silver hair was caked with mud and filth; my eyes sunken, face gaunt from days of starvation, bones jutting beneath thin, fragile skin.

I gave a weak smile, cupped my hands, and drank greedily. I had to take what I could get—who knew when I’d see water again.

After drinking, my body recovered slightly. Rage bubbled up again as I remembered the alpha’s humiliation. Shade growled in agreement. I tried to shift, but searing pain shot through my ankle. I looked down—glowing silver chains. Raw flesh beneath the burning metal. I laughed bitterly; Shade writhed at the power in that silver.

“Silver chains,” I snarled, yanking with all my strength, trying to snap them. “Cowardly bastard.”

Wolves approached, peering curiously into the cell, but never meeting my eyes. The door opened; my wrists were chained with the same silver from my ankle, and I was dragged out.

I stayed silent the whole way to avoid more beatings. We reached the alpha’s grand castle—portraits and ostentatious decor. The great hall was lit and decorated for a grand celebration; pack wolves wore elegant clothes, some dripping in jewels.

I was thrown into the center. Some laughed and pointed; others whispered as I pushed myself to my knees.

“Look, the famous silver slave,” a shrill voice cut through the noise. I looked up—a young she-wolf with golden-blonde hair and intense green eyes full of contempt. She wore the flashiest jewels and was surrounded by admirers. “Goddess, what a stench.” She turned away, covering her nose.

“Stay back, princess. Don’t soil your pretty dress with something so impure,” a dark-haired she-wolf sneered.

The blonde spun in her elegant green gown, basking in applause and sighs. I rolled my eyes—I wasn’t giving them the reaction they wanted. I scanned for the nearest escape route.

“Don’t be cruel, Eleonor. Look at her—filthy, low-caste, body covered in marks from her miserable life,” another said, tone mockingly sweet.

“That mistake isn’t even worthy of breathing the same air as you, daughter,” Viktor’s voice boomed. My whole body locked; hairs rose on my arms as my eyes shot to him.

Bloodlust surged—I wanted to rip his throat out. He approached, his boot nudging my knee.

“Not even an omega would take her as a mate.” Laughter erupted, but when I started laughing, silence fell. Tension thickened.

“Funny, you say that, since the goddess paired us as fated mates. What does that make you, Alpha Alistair?” With effort, I stood, facing him and the crowd. “I, Lyra Cynthion, accept your rejection.” I stepped closer, voice dropping to a whisper. “But I swear I’ll make you regret capturing and humiliating me.”

Shade snarled inside me, claws scraping my mind, but I held her back. The chains would only cause needless pain.

Viktor’s hand shot out too fast to dodge. He seized my throat, lifting me off the ground. I couldn’t breathe; my feet kicked in the air as my nails raked his arm, trying to hurt him enough to make him let go.

“Who are you to threaten me, wolf? A slave.” He flung me across the room; my right shoulder dislocated on impact.

“Let the grand event of the night begin. The Ceremonial Hunt.”

My heart raced at those words. My body shook as I clutched my injured arm and struggled to stand. I was being sentenced to death—offered to the goddess as tribute.

“Whoever captures the prey may claim her as prize before the sacrifice.”

“This has to be a fucking joke,” I whispered. I forced myself upright, popping my shoulder back with a crack that made some wolves flinch. Viktor only stared. “Don’t end the fun too quickly. Enjoy the hunt.”

Chapter 37: Lie or Truth? We returned to the hall, my hand resting on Dean’s arm, just in time to witness the most dramatic and exaggerated entrance of the night. I sighed, bored and disappointed with what I was seeing. They entered in a line, presumably in order of hierarchy—the elders of the alliance. Looking at them, no one would call them old; after all, werewolves enjoyed a much longer youth. But it was noticeable that they were no longer at the peak of their strength. As they passed among the guests, wolves and she-wolves lowered their heads in respect for those ancient wolves, but Dean did not join them. He kept his head high, simply waiting for the group to approach. Still, I had to play my part of the innocent and fragile Luna, even though I believed none of those old wolves deserved my respect. When they stopped in front of Dean and me, I bowed with impeccable posture. “Greetings, elders,” I said in a low, delicate voice.“Alpha Dean Valerius, explain this.” The elder at the

With every new interaction I had at the party, I tried to identify who had approached me and spoken those strange words. As if I didn’t already know, I was constantly being watched. Viktor’s allies were everywhere at that party, just as there were those whose trust he was still trying to win—but I highly doubted he would succeed.“That spoiled pup ruined any chance he had,” I whispered, turning to observe my surroundings.Dean’s scent hit me suddenly. Powerful, intense, enveloping. I turned my face slightly and saw him approaching, dodging some and ignoring others, firm in every step he took.“I will take my Luna away for a few moments,” he announced upon arriving, taking my hand and interlacing our fingers. My heart leaped

Many questions were forming in my head, but none of those she-wolves could give me an answer. My eyes found Dean again; he seemed engrossed in a conversation with his beta and other wolves. The information I got from Eleanor and the other Lunas was pure gold, and I would use it to craft the most spectacular jewel of all.The party continued. The lower-caste wolves and she-wolves seemed more animated and agitated than the Lunas, which was very strange. Our bodies don’t process alcohol the way humans do, so we don’t get drunk no matter how much we drink. Kira appeared behind a particularly rowdy group, her eyes pointing to something on the floor near my foot.A small glass vial, still containing traces of what looked like herbs. I examined the vial curiously, b

I walked through the hall with my head held high. Now, everyone knew who I was and cleared a path so I could move without difficulty. I smiled and nodded, maintaining the image of a sweet and gentle she-wolf.“Miss.” Someone called me. I turned, surprised that anyone would address me so casually after everything that had happened. I looked and saw a group of she-wolves approaching.Five she-wolves, all far too young to be anyone’s mate, which made the interaction even more out of place. Their judgmental gazes swept over my body from head to toe, and then I understood who they were. I glanced beyond the small group and saw Seraphina surrounded by other she-wolves, laughing as they sipped from their glasses.“What a beautiful dress you’re wearing. Could you give us the contact of who made it?” One of the she-wolves stepped closer, trying to touch me, but I pushed her hand away with a sharp slap. The she-wolves looked shocked—very different from everyone else around us. Even I, a mere sl

Even though he looked calm, I could feel the rage exploding inside Dean. His blue eyes gleamed, his smile baring his canines. That interaction was becoming dangerous, and as curious as I was about what Viktor had said, this was far from the best moment to dive deeper into the subject. With little I could do, I grabbed Dean’s arm and made him look at me. I rested my head on his shoulder, giving him a sweet, affectionate look, and the hostile atmosphere vanished completely.“My alpha, may I join the other Lunas? Now that I can be formally introduced, I’d like to get a little closer to the matriarch of Eldermoon.” Viktor’s eyes widened. I could feel the subtle shift in the wolf at the possibility that his event wouldn’t go as he had planned.Dean’s fingers touched my back, pressing gently over the lace. He leaned over me, his lips brushing my ear in an intimate, warm way.“Invite Eleanor to visit our pack,” he whispered, but loud enough for Viktor and the other wolves around us to hear.

I held Gideon's gaze as other wolves approached to clean up the mess he had made. Dean held my hands and carefully pulled me away, increasing the space between Gideon and us, but the Beta quickly advanced, closing the distance even more.Gideon's sudden approach surprised me, and I was frozen for a minute—but it was enough for him to extend his hand toward me, trying to grab my arm. The glass shards crunched on the floor, and Gideon's movements seemed in slow motion as he got closer. However, Gideon barely touched my skin."What do you think you're doing, beta?" Dean growled, grabbing Gideon's wrist with such force that the wolf bent forward, his right knee hitting the ground with a hollow thud.I covered my mouth with my hands, hiding my smile of satisfaction. Yes, that was what I wanted—to see each of them on their knees, humiliated before me, paying for everything they had done. But it still felt wrong. Gideon was being forced by Dean's strength, not by desperation or humiliation.
