*Isla*

Elder Maeven claims the Academy council table by placing six iron seals on it.

The Academy officers do not surrender the room. They retreat to the wall and pretend the distinction matters.

Maeven stands at the head of the table in a gray traveling coat, rain still shining on the shoulders. Her hair is braided tightly against her skull. A thin white scar crosses the bridge of her nose. She has Caelen's eyes and none of his softness.

Her gaze goes first to his right wrist.

Bare skin.

*Isla* "Ask me again," I say. Caelen sits opposite me with his palm above the western copper plate. Three paces of black stone separate us. His right wrist is bare, the old scars visible beneath the loose lead. "Isla," he says. "Do you want to open your ward resonance to the memory keys with me?" "Yes." My voice does not shake. My hand does. I place it flat on the eastern plate. Nothing happens. The fox, river, and pine keys lie around the stolen relay fragment. Sava braces the black hook between two pieces of wood while Lark watches the shallow return groove. Bran holds the cut line. Tomas kneels outside the circle with one hand near my pulse cord and the other near Caelen's. Liora stands beside my guide rope. Maeven watches Caelen's open fingers. Cedric waits through four counts. "Caelen," I say. "Do you want to enter the same memory, without shielding me, directing me, or remaining outside what I see?" Fear passes through his face. "Yes." His palm settles onto the w

*Isla* Cedric writes the stop terms three times. One copy for Nightshade. One for Fennec. One sealed inside an oilskin tube in case the mountain destroys the first two and leaves paperwork as the sole survivor. He reads every line aloud. "Either participant may revoke at any point, for any reason, without explanation." I sit on a flat stone beneath the blackpine overhang while Tomas rebuilds the support around my ankle. My new cane rests across my knees. It began as Torven's climbing staff. Sena cut it to fit my height. Bran wrapped the grip in dry leather. Lark carved two shallow grooves near the base so I can identify its direction in darkness. Nobody asked whether I wanted a cane. They asked what height. I hate how much easier that made the answer. Cedric continues. "Revocation takes effect immediately upon a spoken refusal, release of the copper loop, closure of either hand, failure to answer the fourth-count check, visible respiratory distress, loss of position, or o

*Isla* "We use me," I say. Caelen's expression goes still. Nightshade has gathered beneath a blackpine overhang above the frozen spring. My left leg rests across two packs with the rigid support still buckled around it. Snow presses against the branches overhead. Every few breaths, an awakened stone sends a blue shimmer through the ice. Tomas's observation sits between us. Three breaths. That is how long Perrin's stone-fever eased when Caelen and I freely opened the clean resonance. Three breaths are not a cure. They are more than the pack had an hour ago. "I can enter through my ward response," I continue. "The den stone had commands on the surface and another pattern beneath. If the sanctuary stone contains the same layers, I follow the deeper one." Caelen crouches opposite me. His injured shoulder is bound beneath his coat. Burn marks darken the inside of his right wrist. "How do you enter?" "Through the clean current." "Alone?" "You hold the Fennec side open. I foll

*Isla* Three sledges emerge behind Maeven's scouts. No supplies. People. Perrin lies on the first with his coat open and his iron oath band wrapped in wet cloth. Blue light pulses beneath his skin. Edda occupies the second, body curled around one arm as if protecting it from the rest of her. Noll is strapped to the third because every stonepulse throws him hard enough to roll. The straps are around the sledge. Not his body. Someone learned. Caelen releases me and crosses the snow. "Why did you bring them north?" Maeven kneels beside Perrin. Her blackened oath band gives off a scorched-metal smell. "We tried the southern wash. The moment Perrin crossed the water, his heart stopped." Tomas is moving before she finishes. He checks Perrin's throat, then presses an ear to his chest. "Slow," he says. "Irregular." "His heart returned when we turned north," Maeven says. "Edda stopped breathing at the west ridge. Noll began hearing a command to tear out his eyes." Noll opens th

*Isla* Caelen leaves a knife beside my hand. Not his. Mine. The blade is clean, the sheath dry, and the hilt turned toward my fingers. Beside it sit a cup of water, two pain tablets, bread wrapped in cloth, and the bitter tincture Tomas uses when swelling threatens to lock a joint. All within reach. Caelen is not. He sits at the eastern opening with his back to the rock. Dawn edges the snow beyond him in dull blue. His hands rest between his knees. Still. Too still. He hears me wake but does not turn. I take the tablets. The water is warm. Of course it is. Tomas appears before I finish the bread. He unwraps my ankle and examines the purple swelling around the joint. My knee has stiffened overnight despite the brace. "You will not put full weight on this," he says. "I rarely do what I am told before breakfast." "This is after breakfast." "That bread was a threat, not a meal." He presses beside the ankle bone. Pain turns the cave white. I do not make a sound. Toma

  • The crippled omega warrior girl    Counterfit tenderness

*Isla* You did well. Caelen's voice moves through the bond like a hand over my hair. I stop on the narrow path. He is ten paces ahead, windward of the column. Snow has gathered across his shoulders. He does not turn. The words came from inside me. That should be enough. Instead, warmth opens beneath my ribs. I did well. Not survived. Not endured. Not proved useful. The voice knows which praise I have never learned to refuse. I take one step faster. Caelen looks back. His face is tired. Real. Concern sharpens when he sees my gait. "Pain?" he asks aloud. "Knee." "Worse?" "Yes." He slows until I draw level. His hand lifts toward my back, then waits. I do not invite it. The tenderness inside the bond disappears. We climb another hour before the mountain closes the path. A wall of blue ice blocks the upper shelf. It has formed over black rock in thick frozen folds. The sanctuary ridge rises somewhere beyond it, hidden by snow and darkness. Rovan finds a hollow benea
