___

One year later.

The dry season came hard to Oka'ru.

No rain. No mist. The river was low and the fields cracked.

But the village was full.

Word had spread. _The pack at Oka'ru doesn’t break._

So the strays came. The ones hunted out of other villages. The ones whose Alphas died.

3 wolves. A mother and 2 pups. Scarred and starving.

Kael met them at the tree line.

The mother stepped forward. Thin. Eyes hard. “We heard you take in broken things.”

Kael looked at the pups. They were shak

___ One year later. The dry season came hard to Oka'ru. No rain. No mist. The river was low and the fields cracked. But the village was full. Word had spread. _The pack at Oka'ru doesn’t break._ So the strays came. The ones hunted out of other villages. The ones whose Alphas died. 3 wolves. A mother and 2 pups. Scarred and starving. Kael met them at the tree line. The mother stepped forward. Thin. Eyes hard. “We heard you take in broken things.” Kael looked at the pups. They were shaking. He remembered being 8 and scared and trying not to shift. “You’re home now,” he said. “If you swear the oath.” Jorin stood behind him with 9 other wolves. New faces. Old faces. All watching. “What oath?” the mother asked. Mara answered. She leaned on a stick now, but her voice was still steel. “To protect the land. To protect each other. To bleed before you let harm come to Oka'ru.” The mother looked at Kael. At his scar. At Amina standing next to him with a bowl of water for the pup

  • The last Alpha    Chapter 8 After the Rain

---The rain finally stopped on the 47th day.It didn’t happen all at once. The clouds just thinned. The sun came through in pieces. Steam rose off the roofs and the mud and the dead things in the forest.Oka'ru smelled like wet earth and smoke and something new. Hope, maybe.Kael sat on the burial stone. It was clean now. Washed by Amina and the other women. No blood. No shroud.Just stone, warm from the sun.His side was still wrapped. The black lines were gone, but the scar would stay. Amina said it looked like lightning.“You shouldn’t be out here alone,” she said behind him.Kael didn’t turn. “I’m not alone.”She sat next to him. Close. Their shoulders touched. She had flowers in her hair. Small white ones that grew after storms.“You look tired,” she said.“I am tired,” Kael admitted. “Of fighting. Of bleeding. Of being Alpha.”Amina bumped him. “You’re good at it.”“I killed something,” Kael said quietly. “I felt it die. In my hands.”“I know.”“Does that make me a monster?”Am

---Kael didn’t heal right.Werewolves were supposed to. Cuts closed in hours. Bones in a day.But silver did different things. And whatever the rogue had in its claws wasn’t just claw. The wound in his side festered. Black lines crawled out from under the bandages. Fever came in waves.Amina didn’t leave his side. She changed his dressings. Fed him broth. Wiped the sweat off his forehead when the fever dreams got bad.In the dreams, the rogue was still alive. It stood in the rain and pointed at him.“Blood calls to blood,” it said. “You’ll see.”On the third day, Kael could stand. On the fourth, he could walk.On the fifth, Jorin said they had no more time.---The pack gathered in the big hut. 10 wolves. Thin. Tired.Outside, the hunters had built a camp on the ridge. 50 fires. Every night they got closer. And in the forest, the rogues moved. Kael could feel them. Circling. Watching.“We fight on two fronts,” Jorin said. “We can’t.”“Then we choose one,” Kemi said.“Which one?” Mara

  • The last Alpha    Chapter 6 First Blood

___ The forest was wrong at night. The rain had stopped but the trees were still dripping. Every drop sounded like a footstep. Every shadow looked like teeth. Kael moved through it barefoot. Clothes torn. He wasn’t human anymore. Not fully. He’d shifted as soon as he hit the tree line. It was easier this time. The pain was still there, but it was familiar now. Like stretching a muscle that had been cramped for years. He was big. 7 feet at the shoulder. Black fur slick with mud. Claws clicking on stone. And he was angry. The smell led him. Rot. Old blood. That musk that made his stomach turn. It dragged through the mud in a straight line. No attempt to hide. _It wants me to follow._ Good. He moved faster. Low to the ground. Ears twitching. Behind him, he could feel the pack. Jorin and the others. An hour behind, like they promised. But they were too far. He was alone. The trail led to the old hunting grounds. A clearing his father used to bring him to as a kid. Before he

___The rain never stopped. It just changed. From sheets to needles to mist. But it was always there. On the roofs. In the mud. In your lungs.Kael didn’t sleep. He sat on the roof of the watch hut, spear across his knees, watching the ridge. The hunters would come from there. And somewhere in the dark below, the other thing was moving too.He could feel it. Like an itch under his skin.Down in the village, 10 werewolves prepared. No words. Just the sound of whetstones on metal. Of rope being tied. Of prayers whispered by humans who didn’t know who to pray to anymore. It was just past midnight when the first sound came. Not a howl.A drum.Far. Distant. But steady. _Thump. Thump. Thump._Military drums. The Capital’s march.Jorin was up in an instant. “Positions!”The pack moved. Ghosts in the rain.Kael jumped down from the roof. His legs felt wrong. Too long. The shift was closer tonight. He could taste it.“Tree line,” Jorin ordered. “We hit them as they enter the clearing. We don’

___They didn’t sleep that night. The pack worked.Spears were sharpened. Traps were set at the tree line. Pits covered with leaves. Silver was melted down from old jewelry and hammered into arrowheads. The villagers helped where they could, but most just watched with hollow eyes.Kael worked too. But his hands shook.Every time he closed his eyes he saw them. Red eyes in the dark. The way the thing had looked at Amina. Like it was deciding.By dawn, the rain had turned to mist. The air was heavy and smelled like metal.Jorin found him by the forge. “You look terrible.”“Feel worse,” Kael said. He was hammering a blade. Too hard. Sparks flew. “It’s in my head. The smell. The sound it made.”“That’s good,” Jorin said. “Means you’re paying attention. An Alpha who isn’t scared is a dead Alpha.”Kael set the hammer down. “What do we do if it comes before the hunters? If we fight it, we’ll be weak when they arrive.”“Then we don’t fight it,” Jorin said simply. “We drive it off. Make it thi
