James' POV
David had just ended a call with his insider, and was telling me about a supposed truck that will be carrying the Mayor's goods, out of the town by evening towards the southern road that led to the City. Those idiot vampires.I knew it had something to do with blood. But, as always, all I needed to know were 'when' and 'to where' the goods were going.I sent my messages to the team. They were mostly orphans who lost their parents to vampires, and in a way destiny has brought us together to hunt vampires down. With the information from David's informant, we planned how the ambush would play out. It was going to be clean, fast and swift.By evening, we were in formation waiting. It was about 6:45pm when I heard the screeching of a truck fast approaching. I signaled everyone to positions, and to stay close behind the trees, except for Kayla who stood with me on the road because she'd be driving the truck to the hideout. As we crouched in the dense foliage, waiting for the truck to pass, the only sound that filled the air was the rustling of leaves and the soft whistling of the wind. The trees seemed to loom over us, as if they were keeping an eye on our every move. We had been waiting for hours, and tension was high among our team. Somewhere in the woods, I can hear a stream trickling over rocks and the chirping of birds.I was standing some distance ahead of the fast approaching car with my face hidden in the mask I wore, and my head was bowed. The truck was driving deep into the forest road which leads out of the town, engulfed in the long tunnel of trees whose branches extended over the road, clacking in the autumn wind.I was standing there, in the middle of the road, with a big log of fresh-cut wood blocking their free passage of the truck. The world was a beautiful place before these vampires, who were to quench their thirst with the blood of fresh dead animals, decided to feed on humans. I thought to myselfSuddenly, the fast approaching truck hit a log of wood that had been carefully placed on the road. The truck screeched to a stop, this showed that the driver had instantly marched the brakes at the sight of the woods. The driver and his companion came out of the car. "What the hell are you doing standing in the road? You suicidal or what? The driver glanced at me. He glanced over at his companion, who stood beside him on his dirty gray mare with his hood up."Change of plans… The driver is a human." I exclaimed loudly. There was a surprise on the driver's face."Don't even think about it" I glanced at the other man, who clenched his fist and was about to attack me."Or what, mate?" He roaredI slid my hands into my pockets and sighed, "Or that'll be the last fist you ever get to clench in your life." He didn't seem to like this but he released his fist and buried his hands into his pockets. He laughed, then, unclenched his fist and took some steps forward. "There are two of us here. Let me see, well, you're all alone. We could kill you for all we care and nobody will know we did mate. You know that, right?"I smiled. Move three steps closer to the truck, mindful of the movements each man will make, I had already foreseen that if the driver attacks, David's bullet will take him down, as for the vampire, he is as good as dead already. "And, don't also think of running, you're surrounded."The driver's eyes widened instantly, he raised his eyebrows, his eyes darted around, searching for any signs of danger but there were none. When he was certain he didn't see anyone around. He laughed, "Young man, we gonna have to run you over if you don't step out of the fucking road." The driver busted angrily.I shook my head, taking my eyes from the driver to his companion, took some steps forward, closer to the men. leaves rained gently on the road, shaken from their branches by the autumn wind."For starters, I've got six men aiming at you two, each gun is loaded with a silver bullet that can kill a vampire instantly," I said sternly, "I guess you've watched 'Blade'? Well, that's what I mean."I could see the two men now frightened realizing what they were facing, that I wasn't alone, I was not just a common thief, and that my team has got guns with bullets that can kill a vampire."I'm not going to hurt anyone. I am here for the truck and whatever is in the truck. Nobody needs to get hurt. I'm taking only the truck. However, if you stay in my way, I'll be taking your lives too" I declared. Even as I said this, I did not expect the vampire to not try to attack me, which he did and from nowhere, a bullet struck his head and his body became pale instantly."Please, don't kill me. I have a wife and a daughter. I needed the job to be able to pay my girl's school fees." The driver was shaking with fear. "Here's the key. You can have it." He said and threw the set of keys towards me. As I moved closer to him and bent to pick up the keys, a bullet struck him.The man had wanted to grab the gun in his jeans. His eyes were fixed on James who was bending down. But just as he made to draw his gun, there was a sudden explosion of sound, a sharp crack came from David's trigger which sent him crashing to the ground, gasping for air. David had noticed and was aware of the driver's movements. "Motherfucker! It's sad you made me take your life too. Now, your daughter has become an orphan. And guess what? You won't have to pay school fees anymore."It'd have been surprising if I didn't know who David was. He continued talking to the dead man like he was hearing. One thing is for sure when it comes to my brother, he doesn't gives a fuck. As planned, Kayla was to drive the truck to the hideout. I watched as she walked to the truck, got herself in, positioned her hands on the steering and a deceptive smile split across her face. I knew what she was going to do. Kayla had always been a reckless driver. That's why she's David's favorite. "Just be careful." I yanked at her, regretting why I had agreed to let her drive the truck initially.Ellie's eyes almost bulged out of their sockets at the sight of Lorraine's sudden change. She could sense the power running through her niece. The aura Lorraine exuded was more than just an urge, it was pure anger.Ellie crawled backwards, too surprised to act or do anything. She knew what she was supposed to do but she couldn't, she couldn't bring herself to hurt Lorraine. She was to protect her and not hurt her."Lorraine," Ellie called. Seeing her niece like this had not only surprised her, it broke her too. It was her fault that Lorraine had to go through this. If only she had done what she had to do at the right time then the urge would not have gotten so strong. "Lorraine, fight it. You can do it. Remember your destiny, think about your mother."Lorraine could still hear Ellie's voice in her head but it was getting dimmer with every passing second. Suddenly, Lorraine screamed, her voice echoed with excruciating pain. Someone was doing it. The same thing Ellie could bring hersel
After almost an hour of working on the passport David had given him, Kyle had found out that Mary, as I suspected, had been in and out of Lightwood several times over the last few weeks. According to him, she was in the city at this very moment."When last was she in Lightwood?" David raised a question and Kyle gave him a fiendish glare. He had just said she was still in Lightwood so what does it matter when she entered the town."What is she doing in Lightwood?" David asked another question, with surprise spreading all over his face. If anything, he has had one of the roughest stories so far amongst all of us."We'll have to find out. That's why we need to find her before she leaves the city," I answered, calculating the possibilities of finding her. It was not going to be easy, where would we begin to look? I asked myself. Just as it was impossible to look for a needle in a sea, it was same when the case is turned to her David pursed his lips tightly and smirked. " I don't think sh
Lorraine's POV"Hurry, we need to go before he finds you," Ellie said and began to hasten her steps. She was faster than I expected her to be. Perhaps it was because she was frequent with the road."Before he finds me?" I gaped, unable to hide my surprise. "Is he going to find me?" I halted and my eyes blazed with fear. This was the point where I was supposed to be confused and scared at the same time. And Yes, I was confused and scared.Turning her head backwards, Ellie saw that I wasn't following her anymore. "You need to hurry up, Lorraine, I'm sure he's coming for you right now," she uttered and stopped. I thought I had seen it all and there was possibly nothing more that would shock me again but hearing that he would be able to find me was something I had not expected. My head began to heat up with questions. Complying with her, I continued walking, and even hastened my steps and began to run. "Why is he able to talk to me despite our distance?" I asked but she didn't reply. W
Lorraine's POVJames had blood stains on him. I instantly knew whose blood it was, it was Kayla's.So all this while she had been the mastermind behind everything that was happening. I regretted not reading her mind when I had the chance.Unlike I expected, there was no sign of remorse in James's voice as he spoke. It was as if he had just disassembled a nuclear bomb that would have killed the whole world. After James has rushed out in between our discussion, I wanted to follow him but my mind suggested I gave him some space. It would appear like I was pegging him too much if I don't let him do some things alone. So I forced myself not to follow him and I crawled back onto the bed and waited anxiously for him to return and tell me what it was all about.I was waiting when I slept off."No!" I yelled as I jerked from the nightmare I was having. I was gasping for breath. I looked around the room, the walls were familiar. I was sweating like a rat dropped into a bucket of water. It was o
"James, what happened?" Lorraine's voice echoed as she struggled to get out of bed and go after James who had suddenly run out while they were still discussing. But before she could get up, he was already out of the room.James went directly to his brother's room and knocked on the door, he would have barged in if he didn't know that his brother had a guest."David, I need to speak with you," James said as he knocked again when his first wasn't answered. The thud was loud. He was not supposed to interrupt them but he had no choice. What he had to say was way more important than anything they've got going on inside the room.He knocked several times again. The door opened and David stood inside, spurred by the unnecessary banging his door had to receive when the first knock alone was enough. When he saw that it was David, he did away with the anger. Looking straight into his brother's eyes, he was shocked and curious at the urgency James had used in calling him. He for sure, thought t
"I'm sorry I came late," James said, still wrapping his right hand on the knife he had stabbed into Kayla. Late? Really? Kyle gasped.Who cared if he came late or not? What mattered to Kyle was that he came and he saved them. Kyle was still amazed that he was able to make it to the building so fast. It wasn't even up to twenty minutes that he had texted him about the whole situation immediately he found out that they had walked into a trap.James pulled out the knife and Kayla spilt more blood from her mouth and fell to the ground, covering the place he had dug the knife into her with her hands to stop the gushing of blood but it was of no use, the blood kept pouring out."Ja. Ja…James," she stammered, weakly and turned to face him. She wanted to say something but there was not much strength in her to put the words together. The little she had was going on trying to stop the blood. How did he find them? She never thought he was coming here today."Thanks, man. You saved my ass," Kyl
