Chapter 4

James' POV

David had just ended a call with his insider, and was telling me about a supposed truck that will be carrying the Mayor's goods, out of the town by evening towards the southern road that led to the City.

Those idiot vampires.

I knew it had something to do with blood. But, as always, all I needed to know were 'when' and 'to where' the goods were going.

I sent my messages to the team. They were mostly orphans who lost their parents to vampires, and in a way destiny has brought us together to hunt vampires down. With the information from David's informant, we planned how the ambush would play out. It was going to be clean, fast and swift.

By evening, we were in formation waiting. It was about 6:45pm when I heard the screeching of a truck fast approaching. I signaled everyone to positions, and to stay close behind the trees, except for Kayla who stood with me on the road because she'd be driving the truck to the hideout.

As we crouched in the dense foliage, waiting for the truck to pass, the only sound that filled the air was the rustling of leaves and the soft whistling of the wind. The trees seemed to loom over us, as if they were keeping an eye on our every move. We had been waiting for hours, and tension was high among our team. Somewhere in the woods, I can hear a stream trickling over rocks and the chirping of birds.

I was standing some distance ahead of the fast approaching car with my face hidden in the mask I wore, and my head was bowed.

The truck was driving deep into the forest road which leads out of the town, engulfed in the long tunnel of trees whose branches extended over the road, clacking in the autumn wind.

I was standing there, in the middle of the road, with a big log of fresh-cut wood blocking their free passage of the truck.

The world was a beautiful place before these vampires, who were to quench their thirst with the blood of fresh dead animals, decided to feed on humans. I thought to myself

Suddenly, the fast approaching truck hit a log of wood that had been carefully placed on the road. The truck screeched to a stop, this showed that the driver had instantly marched the brakes at the sight of the woods.

The driver and his companion came out of the car. "What the hell are you doing standing in the road? You suicidal or what? The driver glanced at me. He glanced over at his companion, who stood beside him on his dirty gray mare with his hood up.

"Change of plans… The driver is a human." I exclaimed loudly. There was a surprise on the driver's face.

"Don't even think about it" I glanced at the other man, who clenched his fist and was about to attack me.

"Or what, mate?" He roared

I slid my hands into my pockets and sighed, "Or that'll be the last fist you ever get to clench in your life." He didn't seem to like this but he released his fist and buried his hands into his pockets.

He laughed, then, unclenched his fist and took some steps forward. "There are two of us here. Let me see, well, you're all alone. We could kill you for all we care and nobody will know we did mate. You know that, right?"

I smiled. Move three steps closer to the truck, mindful of the movements each man will make, I had already foreseen that if the driver attacks, David's bullet will take him down, as for the vampire, he is as good as dead already. "And, don't also think of running, you're surrounded."

The driver's eyes widened instantly, he raised his eyebrows, his eyes darted around, searching for any signs of danger but there were none. When he was certain he didn't see anyone around. He laughed, "Young man, we gonna have to run you over if you don't step out of the fucking road." The driver busted angrily.

I shook my head, taking my eyes from the driver to his companion, took some steps forward, closer to the men. leaves rained gently on the road, shaken from their branches by the autumn wind.

"For starters, I've got six men aiming at you two, each gun is loaded with a silver bullet that can kill a vampire instantly," I said sternly, "I guess you've watched 'Blade'? Well, that's what I mean."

I could see the two men now frightened realizing what they were facing, that I wasn't alone, I was not just a common thief, and that my team has got guns with bullets that can kill a vampire.

"I'm not going to hurt anyone. I am here for the truck and whatever is in the truck. Nobody needs to get hurt. I'm taking only the truck. However, if you stay in my way, I'll be taking your lives too" I declared. Even as I said this, I did not expect the vampire to not try to attack me, which he did and from nowhere, a bullet struck his head and his body became pale instantly.

"Please, don't kill me. I have a wife and a daughter. I needed the job to be able to pay my girl's school fees." The driver was shaking with fear. "Here's the key. You can have it." He said and threw the set of keys towards me. As I moved closer to him and bent to pick up the keys, a bullet struck him.

The man had wanted to grab the gun in his jeans. His eyes were fixed on James who was bending down. But just as he made to draw his gun, there was a sudden explosion of sound, a sharp crack came from David's trigger which sent him crashing to the ground, gasping for air. David had noticed and was aware of the driver's movements. "Motherfucker! It's sad you made me take your life too. Now, your daughter has become an orphan. And guess what? You won't have to pay school fees anymore."

It'd have been surprising if I didn't know who David was. He continued talking to the dead man like he was hearing. One thing is for sure when it comes to my brother, he doesn't gives a fuck. As planned, Kayla was to drive the truck to the hideout. I watched as she walked to the truck, got herself in, positioned her hands on the steering and a deceptive smile split across her face. I knew what she was going to do. Kayla had always been a reckless driver. That's why she's David's favorite. "Just be careful." I yanked at her, regretting why I had agreed to let her drive the truck initially.
