MasukChapter 3 – One Dinner
The following evening, the Oko estate was prepared for dinner. The dining room looked less like a family gathering and more like the setting for an important business meeting. Jennifer sat beside her father, maintaining a composed expression as the servants made their final adjustments. Douglas Oko sat at the head of the table. Beside him was Victoria, Jennifer's stepmother. Across from Jennifer sat Greg Adams, one of her father's major business partners, and his son, Julian. Jennifer glanced at Julian. He was undeniably high-society material. His designer suit, perfectly styled hair, and confident manner reflected the wealthy world he had grown up in. Throughout the first course, Julian spoke about his life in London, his father's logistics empire, and his plans for expanding Adams Logistics. “I've been studying the West African transport corridor,” he explained. “There is enormous potential, especially with the developments around the ports.” Greg laughed proudly. “That's my boy. Always thinking about expansion.” Douglas nodded approvingly. “Expansion is good, but without proper infrastructure, it can become a liability.” “Exactly,” Julian replied. “That's why I'm interested in partnerships with companies that understand property development.” Jennifer noticed the brief glance between her father and Greg. There it was. The real reason for the dinner. Business. She lowered her eyes to her plate. The conversation continued between business, international markets, politics, and social events. Jennifer participated when addressed but kept her answers brief. She had no intention of revealing what was on her mind. She had recently completed her degree and was still waiting for her NYSC deployment. She had not even decided what direction she wanted her career to take. The last thing she needed was for her parents to decide the rest of her life. As dessert was served, Victoria finally brought up the subject everyone had been avoiding. “Jennifer has always been wonderfully independent,” she said. “With her degree finished, Douglas and I are eager to see her settle into the next phase of her life.” Jennifer's spoon paused. She knew where this was going. Greg raised his glass. “A young woman like her deserves the best support system possible.” Douglas exchanged a meaningful look with Greg. Then he pushed his chair back. “Greg and I have a few things to discuss in the study. Victoria, perhaps you can show Mrs. Adams the new garden.” Victoria immediately stood, and Mrs. Adams followed her. Jennifer knew exactly what was happening. Her father was clearing the room. Douglas looked at her. “Jennifer, why don't you and Julian have your coffee in the lounge? Give yourselves a chance to talk without us discussing business.” The trap was sprung. Jennifer forced a smile. “Of course, Dad.” Within minutes, the dining room emptied. Jennifer and Julian walked into the formal lounge. For several seconds, neither spoke. Julian buttoned his jacket and gestured toward the seating area. “Please.” Jennifer deliberately chose a high-backed armchair instead of the sofa. She sat with her hands folded in her lap. Julian noticed but said nothing. Instead, he took his espresso and studied her. “You were remarkably quiet tonight.” “I was listening.” “To what?” “Your plans for the company.” Julian smiled. “Work is work. But let's be honest. We both know why our fathers arranged this dinner.” Jennifer remained silent. “A partnership between Adams Logistics and Oko Real Estate would benefit both families,” he continued. “Our fathers understand that.” Jennifer knew he was right. “But when my father suggested we meet, I expected someone very different,” Julian said. Jennifer raised an eyebrow. “What did you expect?” “Someone obsessed with parties, brands, and appearances.” He smiled. “But you're different.” “Different how?” “You're reserved. Observant. You don't seem interested in performing for anyone.” Jennifer studied him carefully. This was not what she had expected. It would have been easier if Julian had been arrogant or entitled. She could have rejected him without hesitation. Instead, he was polite, intelligent, cultured, and surprisingly sincere. That made everything more complicated. “I find that refreshing,” he said. “That's kind of you.” Jennifer paused before continuing. “My mind is occupied with a lot of personal matters. I'm waiting for my national youth service corps deployment, and I'm trying to figure out my career.” “I understand.” Julian placed his cup on the table. “I don't want to rush anything. I'd simply like the chance to know you outside this house, away from our parents and their business arrangements.” “Julian…” “Just one evening,” he said. “No business discussions. No expectations. We can have dinner somewhere quiet and talk.” Jennifer looked at him carefully. His confidence was obvious, but there was no arrogance in his expression. Somehow, that made her decision harder. She knew what her parents wanted. She also knew that agreeing to another dinner could be interpreted as encouragement. Yet refusing him outright felt unnecessarily harsh. “I'll think about it.” Julian smiled. “That's all I'm asking for.” From beyond the lounge, Jennifer heard her father's laughter echo through the hallway. She knew exactly what everyone expected from this dinner. They wanted a connection. Perhaps they were already imagining a relationship that would unite two powerful families. But they didn't know the truth. Jennifer's heart already belonged to someone else. And that made Julian's interest far more dangerous than she realized.Chapter Twenty SixThe scandal that had shaken the city did not remain confined to the city.Even in the countryside, where life moved at a slower pace and people were less obsessed with social media, the story eventually reached the younger generation.Jack's brother's wife was among those who had seen the videos circulating online. She had watched the comments, the accusations, and the endless arguments surrounding Jack's name. Yet, unlike many people in the city, she did not look at him with suspicion or contempt. One evening, while the family sat outside the house, she spoke to Jack."We saw everything that was being said about you on social media," she said gently. "Honestly, I don't understand people anymore. Why do people make it their business to publish other people's private lives for everyone to see?"Jack remained silent. He had heard similar comments before, but coming from someone who knew him personally, the words brought him some comfort. His brother leaned back in his
Chapter 25 – A mother’s heartJack could not take it anymore. The noise, the accusations, the endless questions, and the humiliation had become too much for him. Everywhere he turned, it seemed another problem was waiting for him. The viral videos had destroyed his reputation, Jennifer was heartbroken, and even her father had confronted him with threats.Jack knew he needed to get away. Not because he was running from Jennifer, but because he needed somewhere quiet enough to think. That morning, he packed a few clothes into a small bag and decided to take a vacation to the village. He wanted to escape the noise of the city, the social media storm, and the people who had already judged him without knowing the truth. Before leaving, he sat inside his car for several minutes, staring at the steering wheel. His thoughts went straight to Jennifer. He loved her.But he could not bear watching her suffer because of him. With a heavy heart, Jack started the engine and drove away from the city
Chapter 24 The internet exploded. What had begun as a few disturbing videos from a wild party had become a national scandal overnight. The reels of Jack surrounded by several women were everywhere. They had been reposted thousands of times, discussed on blogs, dissected on social media, and turned into sensational headlines by online commentators. Some people condemned Jack.Others condemned Jennifer for dating him.A few questioned how a man who had appeared so quiet and responsible could suddenly be seen behaving so recklessly.Nobody seemed interested in waiting for an explanation. The internet had already reached its verdict.By morning, mainstream media houses had picked up the story.Television presenters discussed the scandal during breakfast programmes. Radio commentators debated whether Jennifer had ignored warning signs about Jack. Online newspapers published stories about the mysterious party and the wealthy young woman whose relationship had apparently been destroyed by i
Chapter 23 The Offer, and the threat.Jack and Moses sat in silence, watching the disturbing reels on Jack’s phone over and over again.Neither of them could make sense of what they were seeing.Jack leaned back slowly, his eyes fixed on the screen.“There is something about this,” he muttered.Moses looked at him. “What do you mean?”Jack rubbed his forehead.“I don't know. I have seen this before.”“Seen what?”“The place. The people. Something about that night.”Moses frowned. “You mean the party?”Jack nodded slowly.“For some reason, I feel like I was there.”Moses stared at him.“But you told me you couldn't remember anything.”“I know.”Jack lowered his phone.“At first, I thought it was a dream.”“A dream?”“Yes. After I woke up in my car that morning, I remembered fragments. Loud music. People laughing. Flashing lights. I thought my mind was playing tricks on me because of whatever I had taken.”Moses moved closer.“What else do you remember?”Jack closed his eyes, trying
Chapter 22The Viral VideoJennifer sat quietly at the dining table, staring at the food in front of her. She had barely touched it. Since her conversation with Jack, her mind had been filled with conflicting emotions. She still loved him, but everything that had happened between them had changed something. Her father had placed a driver and security around her. Jack had failed to tell her about Emelda's advances toward him. She had asked for a break, even though making that decision had nearly broken her heart. She picked up her phone absentmindedly and opened her social media. At first, she scrolled without paying much attention. Then she saw Jack's face. Her finger stopped. She stared at the screen. It was a short video.Jack.Jennifer leaned closer to the phone, unable to believe what she was seeing. The video showed Jack at what appeared to be a wild party. Loud music played in the background, people crowded around him, and several young women surrounded him. He appeared drunk an
Chapter 21 The wild party Jack woke up at dawn with a violent headache. For several seconds, he remained motionless, staring at the roof of his car.He blinked repeatedly.Something was wrong. The roof was not the familiar ceiling of his bedroom. He slowly raised his head and looked through the windshield. His car was parked by the roadside, surrounded by the faint noise of early morning traffic. Buses and cars were already moving along the road, their headlights cutting through the last darkness before sunrise.Jack frowned.“How did I get here?” He tried to remember.Nothing.He remembered leaving Degree 45 Bar. He remembered the mysterious man who had promised to reveal the truth about the phone calls, graffiti and everything happening around him. After that, everything became a blur. He pressed both hands against his temples. Pain shot through his head.“Damn!”He searched his pockets for his phone. It was there, along with his wallet and car keys. Nothing appeared to have been s
