Chapter 3

Auteur: Perfect Timing
Officer King looked bewildered.

He suddenly stood up from his chair and took the expulsion letter that Fiona handed over. The official stamp on the letter was blood red. It indicated that due to Fiona cheating in an examination, the university was expelling her.

Fiona was mocking Mandy in the interrogation room.

“I killed Mandy because she reported me for cheating. Actually, Mandy is a horrible human being. I’m delighted that she’s dead! I didn’t cheat at all. She’s the one who cheated. She didn’t know anything about working hard; she just enjoyed life, so she wanted to cheat.

“A day before the exams, she begged me to let her copy my answers. I didn’t agree to that. In the end, because she couldn’t answer the papers, she reported me for cheating. She placed a cheat sheet in my pocket in advance.

“Tell me, wasn’t she horrible? If that witch hadn’t died, I wouldn’t be happy. I stole Fiona’s cyanide and put it in Mandy’s water cup. When she fell, I took my sweet time stabbing her eighteen times. She belonged to the depths of hell!”

I was affected by Fiona’s insane laugh and could barely control my expression.

Officer King watched Fiona’s recording, then he placed all three statements on the table. He kept comparing all of our statements as he got more and more serious. The police officers nearby also realized that this murder case could not be easily solved.

Time passed, but Officer King still could not solve it.

Angry and frustrated, he yelled, “Rosalie, what are the three of you doing? All three of you claim that you’re the murderer, and the ways you describe it all sound similar!”

The other police officers were also trying to get me to tell the truth. “Rosalie, do you know you can get the death penalty for murder? You better think before you speak!”

When I looked at their intense gazes, I still calmly said, “I’ve told you that I’m the murderer, and I’m the only one.”

Officer King was enraged by my calm facade. He slammed the evidence onto the table.

He pointed at the love letter, the receipt, and the expulsion letter. “We’ll investigate these items. Once the autopsy results come out, we’ll see what else the three of you can say!”

Anna, Fiona, and I were detained as suspects. All three of us bumped into each other when we left the interrogation room. I was still calm. Anna was still pissed off, and Fiona’s face was still twisted in happiness.

We stopped in our tracks and met each other’s gazes.

Our eyes looked guarded and hesitant, and we all had a sense of camaraderie since we were all claiming to be the murderer.

However, three days later, Officer King let us go.

In the lobby, Officer King pulled out our alibis.

“We’ve confirmed that Mandy died between one and two in the morning from the autopsy report. None of you were at the dorm when it happened.”

The police managed to locate from the school’s surveillance cameras and our phones’ locations that, when Mandy was killed, I was watching a movie with my ex-boyfriend in the city and that I was out all night. Fiona was doing an experiment in the lab until the morning. Anna was working the night shift at a 24-hour convenience store.

All of us only showed up after we found out that Mandy had died.

The counselor who came over to bail us out also advised us not to fool around anymore. “Officer King looked into this. You are good kids; I also believe you aren’t capable of doing such a thing. But you can’t simply admit to a crime like this! Murder is no joke! Go back and write a self-reflection report of at least a thousand words!”

Officer King probed, “Who are you trying to protect?”

All of us sneered, “It doesn’t matter whether you believe it or not, one of us is the murderer!”

“It’s me. I’m the one who killed Mandy.”Those two sentences ended the farce of these few days for good. Both Anna and I looked at Fiona. She was standing upright as she let out a sigh of relief. She looked at Anna and me and said, “I’m sorry for getting you involved in this.”Anna and I did not speak. Instead, we teared up. The recording in the interrogation room started, and Fiona recounted the day of the murder. “Mandy deserved to die! She purposely asked Rosalie’s ex to ask her out for a movie date. However, they drugged Rosalie’s drink, and they wanted to sell her to an old man. Fortunately, Rosalie managed to wake up in time to call me…”The convenience store that Fiona was working at was just on the street next to the hotel that I was at. After Fiona saved me, she brought me back to the dorm to confront Mandy. At that time, it was past the dorm curfew. Hence, Fiona and I climbed over the wall, which was located in the blind spot of the surveillance camera. Our dorm wa

Both my and Anna’s parents were in the photos. Someone had splashed paint on my house, and my parents’ supermarket was smashed. Someone even wrote ‘die,’ ‘murderers,’ and ‘trash’ on the walls. My parents had no choice but to stay with our relatives and bear the disdain from them. As for Anna’s house, it had been burned down completely. Her grandmother was sent to the hospital after inhaling too much smoke. She was still unconscious in the ICU. Her parents’ hair turned gray overnight. The orphanage that Fiona stayed in was affected too. The sponsors took back their donations, and they ran into financial issues. The adults and children of the orphanage were despised by others.Of course, our counselor was affected too. The university had suspended her, and her promotion was cancelled. Some parents even started a petition to get the university to fire her. They claimed that she had groomed murderers. We were triggered by the photos. The images of our loved ones being insulted hu

A few days passed, and Officer King still could not find concrete evidence to point to the real murderer. Mandy’s case ran into a dead end. The discussion online regarding us claiming to be murderers also exploded online and caused a huge commotion. Mandy’s parents showed up at the police station every day, and they were putting up signs wanting us to get the death penalty. Officer King was under immense pressure from his superior and the gossip. He had no choice but to adjust his investigation. He started to look into our past entanglements with Mandy. Then, he finally found a breakthrough. He interrogated us once again. “The three of you are best friends, right?” Officer King asked out of nowhere, and he sounded extremely calm. I played with my fingers while answering absent-mindedly, “You’ve been to university; we’re just like regular roommates.”Anna grimaced and looked away. “My day is split between classes and labs. I’m extremely busy. What time do I get to make frie

“I’m giving you one last chance for you to confess. I might just be able to let you off the hook if you do.”Upon hearing that, all three of us were obviously stunned. Anna subconsciously lowered her head while Fiona’s expression froze. My heart skipped a beat. Officer King took note of our reactions. “Why? Why aren’t you talking? The murderer should confess and stop dragging other people into this mess. That’s way too selfish.”I caught the weakness in Officer King’s words. I hid my frantic expression and looked at him before saying, “Officer King, since you’ve found the murderer, you should capture them then. Why are you still trying to manipulate us? I’ve already confessed to the crime; why are you still arguing with me here? You should just detain me.”I knew that even though Officer King knew who the murderer was, he did not have enough evidence to support his claim. Officer King was stunned by my words. He stared at me for a while before answering seriously, “Rosalie, yo

Officer King met our firm gazes and frowned even deeper. He had not expected us to be this stubborn. “All three of you have alibis. The surveillance camera and the witnesses can confirm that. Murder is not a joke!” Officer King warned. “You’re seniors; you should know what to do and what not to do. The police station isn’t a place for jokes, and a murder isn’t meant for you to lie about!” After saying that, he slammed the three statements forcefully against the table before us. However, none of us budged. We insisted that we were the murderers. Officer King and the counselor had no other choice. However, just when he was about to ask the counselor to bring us back to the university, I took out an item. It was a small shard of glass.“This is the cyanide bottle I used. I smashed it and flushed it down the toilet. This is the remaining piece, and Mandy’s blood is on it. Do you want to run it in the lab?”My words shocked both the counselor and Officer King. The latter ended up co
