Kind and generous?

I looked at the scene in front of me where I had personally handed my own girlfriend over to another man. She was right. I was indeed kind.

Seeing her in her wedding dress and beaming with joy right now, who would’ve thought that seven years ago, Ava Dewan was diagnosed with late-stage cancer and was told by her doctors that she didn’t have much time left.

Back then, she wasn’t glowing like she was now. After a long fight against her illness, she had lost all her hair, her face was completely drained of color, and she didn’t even have the strength left to live.

I was only eighteen at the time—young, impulsive, and blinded by love. I happened to be bound to a System, so I traded fifty years of my lifespan to save Ava.

I thought we would be high school sweethearts and eventually get married. Yet in the end, she was getting married to someone else.

In the hall, the priest stood at the end of the aisle. At the door, photos of Ava and Henry Jones on vacation together—skiing, by the beach, and even watching the sunrise together—were displayed.

Once, when I asked Ava to go on a vacation with me, she had said impatiently, “You know I’m a low-energy person. All I want is to lie down and go nowhere. Can you stop making things difficult for me?”

But what about now? She claimed over and over that she was someone with low energy, yet she had been on over a hundred vacations with Henry, taking photos that now filled an entire wall.

As it turned out, her energy was low only when she was with me. With the person she truly loved, she had endless energy.

I randomly found a seat in a corner and sat down. Looking closer, I finally noticed our pre-wedding photos had been replaced with pre-wedding photos of Ava and Henry. Even the invitation cards on the chairs had their names printed on them.

It meant she had only asked me about it earlier out of formality. They had already prepared the wedding photos and invitation cards, so even if I hadn’t given up my spot, this wedding would’ve never been mine.

I couldn’t bear listening to the people around talking about how they were a match made in heaven, so I returned backstage again.

My aunt asked curiously, “I seem to remember Ava and Finn being a couple. Why is she marrying Henry instead?”

Mom patted Ava’s hand, smiling radiantly. “It’s all the same. She’ll still be our wonderful daughter-in-law.”

My aunt said, “True, we’re all family, so there’s no difference. Henry has been more sensible than Finn since he was little. Finn was raised by his grandparents, and they’ve spoiled him rotten. He's always arguing, fighting over things, and kicking up a fuss.”

  • Three Days Left   Chapter 10

I shook my heavy, aching head as long-buried memories came flooding back, allowing me to recognize everyone here. I also remembered what day today was. It was the day Ava and I first met.Today, I was supposed to be cornered on the narrow path near the school gates by bullies demanding money. Ava happened to walk past right then, bravely driving them away by threatening to report them to the teacher. Even though she was just a girl, she was far braver than my younger self.Back in school, she helped me, tutored me in my studies, and taught me how to be courageous. She used to tell me, “Finn, if you want to change your circumstances, you have to study hard and make it out of here!”She was once the light that illuminated my dark life—a ray of light that she later destroyed with her own hands.I looked down, losing all interest in class. I had already repaid her kindness with my very life. This time, all I wanted was to live for myself and build an extraordinary life of my own.I d

After receiving her answer, Ava wasn’t happy at all. Instead, she felt much sadder.Finn was willing to give up his very life for her. Yet, during the final three days of Finn’s life, what did she do?She married his younger brother and followed his younger brother's lead in bullying him; she deceived him and killed him. “Ah!” Ava screamed in agony. She woke up from her dream with a start, but that crippling pain never dissipated.Ava took a deep breath. Just as she told herself it was all merely a dream, a mechanical voice echoed in her mind.[Ava Dewan, if you were given a chance to save Finn, but it would require trading all your remaining life, would you be willing to trade it?]Ava froze. Only then did she realize that everything she had seen in that dream was real.“Yes! I’ll do it! He gave me his life, and now I’m giving it back to him. Please give it back to him for me. I beg of you…”[Ding! Exchange successful. Ava Dewan, please enjoy the final day of your life.]A

It felt so ridiculous to her. They had killed someone, yet they didn’t feel ashamed at all. Instead, they expected her to help them cover it up. And to think she had actually hurt Finn for people like them.Ava closed her eyes, and tears silently slid down her face.Mrs. Jones spoke up again. “Ava, you were involved in this too. If you call the police, you’ll be held responsible as well.”Ava knew that, but even so, she was going to get justice for Finn. There wasn’t much left for her to make amends with. This was all she could do.After calling the police, Ava entered the operating room. There, Finn lay on the freezing operating table, his body covered in small cuts inflicted by Henry. She touched Finn’s face. It was so pale and so cold, so much so that it sent a shiver down her spine. When the medical examiner arrived, he determined that Finn’s death was caused by sudden cardiac arrest. There were multiple injuries on his body, including a severe laceration on his right leg.

“Ava, don’t blame yourself for it. Finn failing to make it off the operating table was just his fate. No one is to blame. At least Henry is okay. Now that his illness is cured, the two of you can live happily ever after from now on.”Ava shoved Mrs. Jones’s hands away and roared hysterically, “What do you mean, it was just his fate? Finn was murdered! It was me, and it was all of you—every one of us is a murderer!”Then, she rushed at Henry like a madwoman. “You promised me Finn would be fine! Why is he dead now? Get up and talk to me!”The Joneses couple rushed forward to stop her, but they were a step too late. Ava yanked back the white sheet and dragged Henry straight off the bed.Mrs. Jones screamed in terror, “My son just had surgery! He can’t move around like that!”Henry had originally intended to pretend to be unconscious, but when Ava dragged him down, he fell to the floor and couldn’t help but scream in pain.Ignoring everything, Ava shouted, “I don’t care! You killed s

“What is going on?”When the ECG flatlined, Henry was scared out of his wits. Even the corrupt doctors and nurses in the operating room were startled. The doctor pushed Henry aside and frantically signaled to the others, “Quick, resuscitate him immediately!”Henry’s legs went limp. Pushed aside by the corrupt doctor, he tumbled straight onto the floor. Yet, he felt no pain at all. He just stared blankly at Finn, who was covered in blood on the operating table. He wasn’t sad about Finn’s death. He was simply terrified that a life had been lost and he might be implicated, ruining his future.Outside the operating room, Ava, along with Mr. and Mrs. Jones, waited anxiously.Ava held the necklace she had gotten for Finn, her lips constantly murmuring, “Please let him be alright.”At the exact moment Finn’s life came to an end, the necklace in her hand snapped, and the four-leaf clover charm fell onto the floor.Ava stared blankly at the scene. She felt a sharp, sudden pang in her he

On the way home, Ava pulled the car over in a quiet, secluded area.“You barely ate anything earlier,” she said. “I made this chicken soup beforehand. Have some to fill your stomach. Once you feel a little better, I’ll make you your favorite roast chicken.”My eyes watered as I said, “Let’s not wait for later. Let’s do it today. I’m fine.”I was about to die. I wouldn’t be able to have it later on. Ava paused for a moment, then nodded. “Alright. Have some soup first, and I’ll make it for you when we get back tonight.”I downed the still-warm soup in one gulp. Even though it was just chicken soup, it warmed my heart.Once I was done, I looked at Ava, intending to say my final goodbyes. However, a sudden bout of dizziness hit me. It felt like the ground was crashing down on me, and I lost consciousness once more.In a daze, the strong stench of disinfectant filled my nostrils again. Was I in the hospital again? Had my health deteriorated to such a dire state?Just as the though
