She picked up on the fourth ring, which meant she'd looked at the screen first.

"Elena." Her voice was warm and a little guarded, the way it always was when I called without warning. "Is something wrong?"

"No. Nothing's wrong." It came out too quickly, and I heard her hear it. "I'm all right. I'm in Dad's study."

A pause. "Oh."

"I'm not touching anything." I wasn't sure why I'd said it. "I just needed somewhere quiet."

"That's all right. He'd have liked you having it." Another pause, softer. "A

I should have stopped there. A sensible person would have.I'd found the thing I'd been looking for. I had my father's name beside Adrian's father's, two men standing together, and a date on which the matter was to be put before people who couldn't ignore it. I could have closed the laptop and gone to the kitchen and made myself eat something. I could have let it be enough. But the story had an ending, and I'd already seen its last line: *closed without a finding.* Between those two sentences there was a hole, and I couldn't leave it alone. So I kept going. The next piece was short. A few lines in the back of a column, no byline. It said the referral had not taken place. It didn't say why. It said that the company in question had, in the days before the matter was to have been raised, "taken steps," which the writer left tactfully unspecified. And it said, in a sentence so carefully built I could almost hear the lawyer's hand in it, that "those close to the matter were understood to h

I went back to the archive the next morning, and this time I knew what I was looking for.Not a name. A shape. My mother had said *something between them,* and the article I'd found had only been the end of a sentence. If the inquiry had been opened and then closed, then something had to come before it. Something that started it. You don't investigate nothing. So I stopped searching for my father's name and searched for the Cross name alone, and then for the two of them together, and then for the words people use when something is going wrong inside a company. *Irregularities. Concerns. Regulators.* I let the archive's dull engine grind through them, one result at a time.Mia brought me coffee without a word and left again. The house was cold, and the garden outside the study window was the color of old dishwater, and I sat at my father's desk in his chair and read.It came in pieces. That was how I understood it later, in the order I'd found them, not the order they'd happened. A sho

I wasn't sure why I'd said it. "I just needed somewhere quiet.""That's all right. He'd have liked you having it." Another pause, softer. "Are you eating?""Yes.""Are you sleeping?""Mostly.""Mostly," she said, and sighed. "You always did say that when you meant no."I smiled, despite everything, and closed my eyes. The old chair creaked as I leaned back. I could smell paper and cold coffee and, very faintly, the mints he used to carry."Mom. I need to ask you something. And I need you to answer it, even if you'd rather not."The line was quiet. I could hear the faint tick of the clock on her kitchen wall, the one that had never k

I started with the only thing I had, which was a gap.He had said *the families.* He had said *Ash's side* and *my father* and *the people who'd stood by him,* and he had not once said the name I was listening for. It wasn't a lie. I was almost sure of that. But I had spent six years learning to hear the shape of what a person leaves out, and the shape of this was clear. So the next morning, when the house was quiet and Mia was still asleep, I sat down at my father's desk with a cup of coffee and a laptop and began to look.I didn't know where to start. I didn't know the name of the deal, or the company, or even the year it had gone wrong. Adrian had given me a story with the edges rubbed off. So I did the simplest thing a person could do. I typed two names into a search box, my father's and Adrian's family's, and let the machine work out what they had in common. For a long time, nothing. A scatter of unrelated results. A charity announcement. A line in a trade directory. I scrolled u

He began with the tea."It's gone cold," he said, looking into his cup, and I realized he'd been holding it for a long time without drinking. He set it down. "I always start there when I'm putting something off. I'll try not to.""You can start anywhere.""The beginning's too far back. It was older than both of us when it started." He turned the cup a quarter turn on the table. "I'll start with my father."I didn't move. I'd decided, in the half-second before he spoke, that I wouldn't help him find the words. I would only be there."The families didn't like each other. You know that much. It was the kind of dislike that gets handed down, like a house or a name. Nobody remembered exactly why. By the time I was old enough to understand it, it had become a sort of weather. You dressed for it and didn't ask where it came from.""And your father?""My father believed in doing things properly." His voice softened, very slightly. "That was the whole of his religion. He thought if you built a

I didn't wait for *after.*I'd meant to. That was the thing I couldn't quite forgive myself for, lying awake that night with the letter on the nightstand and his arm still warm in my memory. I'd told him I would ask when I couldn't wait, and I'd meant it as a measure of patience. But patience, I was finding, had a floor. You could stand on it for a long time, and then one evening you looked down and understood it had been the thing keeping you from falling. So when he came the next night, I didn't take him out to the porch. I sat him down in the kitchen, at the table where he'd first told me what he wanted, and I put two glasses of water between us and didn't touch mine.Mia was upstairs. The house had that settled hush it got at the end of the day. The kettle sat cold on the stove."You said *after,*" I said."I did.""I've been trying to wait for it."He didn't say anything. He had taken off his coat, but he hadn't loosened his collar, and he sat very straight, the way he did in roo
