LOGINDragged by several people, it felt like being carried into a grave without a coffin. No matter how hard I fought against Nathaniel and his gang, they pressed harder, leaving me helpless.
I resisted—there was a hard slap across my cheek. I fought again—another slap on the other side. No one helped. No one even cared. The faces I passed in the corridor only stared blankly, as if I were nothing more than a filthy animal not worth saving. My whole body ached from struggling until my last bit of strength was gone. Nathaniel and his gang hauled me all the way down to the lowest floor, through endless corridors, and out to the academy’s back garden. The sky above was already dark, the garden lights glowing faintly, their reflections shimmering on the surface of a decorative pond. I was half-thrown to the side of it. “Get up, Anastasia.” Nathaniel’s voice teased me. My hands shook as I tried to push myself up. Fear and dread made me want to give in. I couldn’t even cry. “Anna? You hear me? What are you, deaf?” Nathaniel chuckled softly. “What do you want?” I hissed, forcing myself to look at Nathaniel standing arrogantly over me. “How funny, as if you don’t have sins.” My fear turned into despair. Even if I defended myself, I knew I wouldn’t make it out alive. They wanted to torture me. I laughed bitterly. “We’re all sinners, Nathaniel. You talk about sins? Why don’t you try saying that in front of a mirror?” “You!” he snapped. “Get her up! We’ll drown her!” What? My breath caught in my throat. I scrambled to run, but my arms and legs were already seized. They lifted me again, carrying me like a sacrificial lamb. I screamed at the top of my lungs, hoping someone would hear. But no one came. My cries only fueled Nathaniel and his gang’s excitement. They laughed as if I were nothing more than a toy. They dragged me into the indoor pool and threw me roughly to the edge. My body felt shattered, my muscles strained, every nerve screaming. “Why are you here? Spying on us? So you can tattle to your father?” Nathaniel paced, his footsteps echoing with menace. “Don’t flatter yourself. I don’t care about you,” I spat. “You or Gabriel.” “Really? Out of all the academies in the world… why Bastorin?” How was I supposed to know the twins would be here? If I’d known from the start, I would’ve rather become a nun. “What are you after here?” Nathaniel pressed. “Think about it.” My hands trembled as I tried to push myself upright against the cold floor. “You think I came here to find peace?” I raised my head, staring at Nathaniel’s furrowed brow. “I came here for revenge! I will win! I’ll destroy you and your mother from the Lancroft family!!” I screamed furiously. Grab! Nathaniel’s hand clamped around my throat. “You wretched bitch!” His grip crushed the air out of me. I clawed at his arm, but my blows were useless. My body was dragged back and— I flew for a split second in the air before crashing into the pool. The icy water stung, my nose burned, and water rushed down my throat. No! Help! I thrashed, arms and legs kicking, but I sank deeper. My lungs filled with water. Pain! Pain! Someone help me! My vision blurred—suddenly, an arm wrapped tight around my waist from behind. My body surged upward as someone dragged me toward the surface. Breaking through the water, I gasped for air, coughing violently, clinging to the pool’s edge with shaking hands, too weak to climb out. Around me—no one. Just footsteps fading away. Damn it! Nathaniel really did mean to kill me here! “Get up,” a deep voice commanded from behind. With effort, I climbed out, pushed by him. When I turned toward the pool, my eyes widened. Standing before me was the school council president. Alexei. His face was so close I could see every detail. “Attempted suicide?” His eyes were cold. “I-I…” I stammered. Alexei placed his hands on the pool’s edge and pulled himself out with ease. His shirt and trousers clung to him, soaked, outlining the sculpted body beneath. “Can you stand, Anastasia?” Something inside me froze. I could only stare as Alexei crouched slightly, then scooped me into his arms. My body stiffened, but I couldn’t say a word. Couldn’t even resist. He carried me out of the pool area, down a dimly lit path, through another door into the academy. I thought he would take me to the infirmary, but he kept walking steadily, as if I weighed nothing at all. Finally, we reached his office, the door half-open. He stepped inside and lay me gently on the sofa. Water dripped from my clothes, pooling on the floor. My gaze followed him as he closed the door, then slipped off his shoes and socks. “Can you tell me what you were doing out there, Anastasia?” He walked to the fireplace, throwing in logs. I could only watch his back. “It was Nathaniel and his friends. They pushed me into the pool,” I said softly. “And you can’t swim?” He extended an arm, dropping his soaked shirt to the floor, exposing his broad shoulders and strong back. I shook my head. “No, sir.” When Alexei turned around, I flinched. His body was perfection, divine. My eyes refused to look away. His chest, his abs—I couldn’t stop staring. “And who do you think is at fault?” he asked. I shook my head again. “I’m not sure. Nathaniel?” Alexei strode toward me, his piercing gaze terrifying. “It’s your fault. You should’ve been able to swim.” What? Nathaniel and his friends had bullied me, tried to kill me—and he blamed me because I couldn’t swim?! But my tongue was tied. I couldn’t argue back. “You want to be a winner, don’t you? Winners take it all. No weaknesses allowed. Even if you’re bloodied, Anastasia.” “I understand, sir.” Alexei cupped my chin, his cold fingers forcing me to look up into his eyes. “Take off your clothes, Anastasia,” he whispered. I jolted. What? Why would he say that to me? “You hear me, don’t you? You want to be a winner?” I swallowed hard. “Why do I have to take off my clothes?” “Don’t question my order, Anastasia. Do what I told you. Now—take off your clothes…”ALEXEI POVBastorin. What little remains in my mind stirs old memories. Seeing the academy neglected, reduced to something like a haunted ruin, makes my chest ache. I do not even understand why I suddenly wanted to come here, even though there is no guarantee I will find any answers.I step inside and walk along the pedestrian path, taking in the garden that has turned into overgrown brush. My gaze drifts to the grimy windows, dull and sorrowful, and to the front doors standing wide open.Memories of my time studying here surface. Yet something feels off, as if there is more buried beneath those memories. My head refuses to cooperate, refuses to recall it all.I keep wandering through the academy, not thinking about any danger that might be lurking. Strangely, I feel safe here. Bastorin is the safest place for me. The place where I found…Love.“Love?” I murmur, confused.I step into the headmaster’s office and stop at the open doorway. The room is in chaos, ransacked brutally. Yet I
Isolde, Tisha, and I cautiously stepped out of the car. We scanned the abandoned agricultural airstrip—it was eerily quiet, completely unguarded. Tall weeds grew wild around neglected hangars, and the runway itself was cracked and riddled with holes.“Hm. Fancy meeting place,” Tisha muttered as she casually sat on the hood of the car. “Is Darius taking long? It’s pitch-dark out here.”Isolde, who had left the headlights on, shot her a look. “Sit in front of the lights, not on my hood.”I glanced at Tisha as she moved from the hood and slid into the back seat. She pulled out a pack of cigarettes from her jacket pocket, took one, lit it, and soon thin smoke filled the car. Isolde didn’t even bother complaining anymore.About ten minutes later, three cars arrived in a convoy and parked not far from us. I exchanged a look with Isolde and Tisha; both went on alert instantly. Their expressions were calm, but they were clearly ready for anything.“Great. He brought reinforcements,” Tisha sco
“This is the only solution,” Isolde said.Quickly, she shoved my suitcase into the trunk while Tisha practically pushed me into the car. Meanwhile, the twins looked clearly unwilling to let me go. I hated how tense the atmosphere had become, mainly because I had no voice anymore, as if all the problems had started because of me.“Anna will still be safe with us,” Nathaniel insisted.“In what way?” Isolde snapped. “She just terminated a few people who were following her!”“And only God knows what would’ve happened to Anna if she hadn’t been trained by Katerina all these years,” Tisha added. “Listen, Nate, these people will keep coming after Anna. She should stay with us for now.”“Until the business with Darius is finished,” Isolde added.Nathaniel clicked his tongue, clearly still disagreeing with Isolde and Tisha’s plan. The bottom line was, in the twins’ opinion, if I were away from them—Gabriel and Nathaniel—I wouldn’t be safe. But whether they admitted it or not, even staying clos
The man stayed silent, even though he knew his life could end at any moment. He was braver choosing death than naming who had sent him to spy on me. I’d noticed it back at the café; someone had been tailing me everywhere I went.I wasn’t worried about myself. What terrified me was the thought that something might happen to Marva.I’d already warned Marva to leave the city immediately and return overseas. I couldn’t let anything happen to her. I needed her. Once all the evidence was gathered, Marva would be a key witness. She knew better than anyone how rotten Vlad truly was.“I’ll ask you one last time,” I hissed into his ear. “Who sent you? And I swear, if you stay silent, I’ll blow your head off. Right now.”He shook his head again, still refusing to speak. Maybe his family was being threatened, which is why he chose death. If that was the case, I had no other choice.Bang.The body I was holding went limp. As soon as I released him, he collapsed to the ground. One by one, I finishe
ALEXEI POVDarius’s expression hardened. I could see the anger he was barely holding back, threatening to explode. But no, Darius would never dare to shout at me or throw me out. He needed me just as much as I needed him.We had an agreement that couldn’t be avoided.“What were you thinking?” Darius muttered.“Anna cornered me, and I couldn’t just stay silent. She acted like she knew me, like we…” I let the words trail off.I had felt the longing in Anna’s voice, in her gestures, in the way she looked at me. It was all an act, one she played effortlessly. And I had been careless enough to take the bait and reveal everything in front of her.And now, there was no turning back.“Anna will tell the other Nightshade leaders,” Darius said, exhaling heavily. “I won’t be able to protect you, Alexei. This is all going to be messed up.”“I’ll make sure you stay safe.”“Do you really think so?” Darius snapped. “We were supposed to take down Vlad, and you were supposed to lure Anastasia into bec
My trembling body collapsed onto the floor the moment I returned to the mansion. The maids panicked immediately, rushing to help me and supporting me toward my room. At the same time, Nathaniel was coming down the stairs. The second he saw me, he rushed over. Without saying a word, he swept me into his arms and carried me straight to the bedroom.“Bring warm water. Now,” Nathaniel ordered. As soon as I was laid on the bed, Tisha, Isolde, and Gabriel rushed in. Panic was written all over their faces when they saw me crying uncontrollably. Gabriel climbed onto the bed and wrapped his arms tightly around me.“Calm down, Anna. Everything will be okay,” he whispered.I shook my head violently. “No. This won’t be okay! This is a disaster!”I heard Nathaniel let out a rough breath. “Alright. I’m going to beat that Benjamin bastard right now. I’ve had enough of this.”“Wait. I’m coming with you,” Gabriel added.I immediately grabbed Gabriel and shook my head. “He knows…”They all looked at me
