The deafening rattle of automatic gunfire tore through the cavernous server vault, chewing chunks of reinforced concrete from the pillars and sending a blizzard of pulverized dust into the air.

Galen lunged to the left, his broad frame slamming into the heavy metal casing of a quantum server rack just as a high-velocity round sparked off the steel edge inches from his ear. His Glock was already up, clearing leather with practiced fluidity. He didn't hesitate, returning fire with two controlled, double-tap shots that tracked upward along the catwalk.

A muffled cry echoed from above as one of the operatives took a round to the shoulder, tumbling backward over the metal railing and hitting the concrete floor with a heavy, sickening thud.

"They've got us pinned in a crossfire!" Nurin yelled from behind a secondary server rack ten feet away. She didn't sound panicked; her voice was clipped, razor-sharp, and entirely lethal. She leaned out, squeezing off three rapid rounds that forced the remaining gunmen on the upper level to duck back behind their ballistic barriers.

"Bagas!" Galen barked into his lapel comms, his dark eyes scanning the perimeter for an escape vector while returning suppressive fire. "The exit doors are sealed! Override the pneumatic locks on the secondary maintenance hatch now!"

"I'm trying, boss!" Bagas’s frantic voice cracked through the earpiece, punctuated by the relentless clatter of a physical keyboard. "Whoever set this honeypot hard-wired a physical relay straight into the building's main power grid! I have to bypass three layers of analog isolation just to pop the latch!"

"You've got sixty seconds before they flush this entire room with tear gas or worse!" Nurin snapped, tossing a tactical flash-bang grenade into the open space beneath the catwalk to disrupt the advancing ground squad.

Clatter. Flash.

A blinding white explosion ripped through the bunker, accompanied by a concussive shockwave that rattled the server racks. Two of the Syndicate mercenaries staggered out from the smoke, disoriented and stumbling blindly. Galen didn't hesitate. He closed the distance with predatory speed, sweeping the legs out from under the first operative and driving the butt of his sidearm into the second man's temple, dropping both instantly.

On the central monitor, the live feed of the minimalist Geneva office flickered. The synthesized voice of the Syndicate Mastermind cut through the chaos, dripping with cold, mocking amusement.

"You fight hard, Galen. Just like your father did before he drove over that cliff. But absolute control isn't won with fists and bullets. It's won by knowing when to let go."

Galen’s jaw tightened so hard a muscle ticked violently in his cheek. He stepped over a fallen operative, his gaze locking onto the camera lens of the monitor with a dark, burning fury. "My father didn't break. And neither will we."

"We'll see about that," the Mastermind replied softly.

The monitor suddenly went black. Simultaneously, the rhythmic whining of the quantum server cooling fans died, plunging the massive bunker into an eerie, pulsing red glow as the emergency backup generators kicked in.

"Boss! The power grid just severed!" Bagas yelled through the comms, his voice laced with panic. "They're dumping the room's oxygen! They're trying to suffocate you out!"

Nurin felt the air pressure in the vault instantly drop, her lungs suddenly straining against the thin, vacuum-sealed atmosphere. She dropped to one knee beside Galen, her hand instinctively gripping his arm. "The ventilation shafts," she gasped, her voice tightening. "They're routing the purge through the ceiling grates."

Galen didn't waste a second. He holstered his sidearm, grabbed a heavy iron crowbar left behind by a technician, and vaulted onto the top of a server rack. With a burst of raw, controlled strength, he jammed the tool into the ceiling's reinforced metal vent grate and threw his entire body weight against it.

CRACK.

The rivets sheared off with a deafening screech. The heavy metal grate tore free, dangling by a single twisted wire and revealing a dark, vertical maintenance shaft leading upward into the building's core.

"Go!" Galen ordered, grabbing Nurin by the waist and hoisting her effortlessly up into the opening.

She scrambled into the dark shaft, coughing as the heavy, chemical-laden air of the bunker began to fill with thick, grey suppression smoke. "Galen, get up here!"

Galen dropped the crowbar, pulled himself up through the narrow opening just as the vault doors below hissed open, and kicked the ceiling panel shut behind them, locking it into place with a sharp metallic click.

They lay flat in the cramped, dusty maintenance shaft, their chests heaving as they dragged in the slightly cooler air circulating through the upper ducts. Below them, the muffled sounds of the Syndicate strike team swarming the empty server vault echoed faintly through the metal barrier.

Nurin wiped a smudge of soot from her cheek, turning her head in the dim light to look at Galen. Her dark eyes were fierce, unyielding, and burning with a lethal intelligence. "They wanted us trapped. They wanted us to burn through our ammo and our air."

Galen reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently cupping the side of her face, brushing a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. The ruthless SCBD strategist was gone, replaced by a man whose entire world began and ended with the woman lying beside him.

"Instead, they gave us a direct line to their upper floors," Galen whispered, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated through the metal floor beneath them.

Nurin smiled—a cold, beautiful, predatory curve of the lips. She reached into her tactical pouch, pulling out her biometric drive and sliding it firmly into her pocket.

"Then let's finish the climb," she said softly.

Without another word, Galen turned and began crawling upward into the dark, leading the way toward the heart of the enemy's empire.

The thick, acrid smoke from the breaching charge hadn't even fully cleared the subterranean corridor before Galen and Nurin were moving through the warped steel frame. The blast doors hung on shattered hinges, revealing a sprawling, high-tech subterranean bunker humming with the relentless power of a hundred server stacks."Clear left," Nurin muttered sharply, her tactical boots hitting the concrete floor with barely a sound. Her titanium-alloy sidearm was raised, her dark eyes scanning the long, dimly lit hallway lined with exposed fiber-optic cables and blinking indicator lights.
