Black smoke rose from the inner circle. The stench of death and decay filled her lungs. Candles surrounded her in their dim, yellowish glow. Small bones laid scattered around her. Rats. Birds. Rabbits. Any available creature she could get her hands on. Books lay open, each with a different unique spell written on the aged parchment. Wind whistled and rocked against the weak wooden structure of the hut she made, as there were no other places to safely experiment. She ignored the cold that kissed her toes. Frostbite threatened her fingertips, but she didn't dare quit. She felt so close to her solution. So much closer to help him. And yet...

As the smoke cleared away, her eyes dead set on the corpse of a crow she had slaughtered. Nothing. Not a twitch of the wing. Not a flinch of a talon. Nothing. She ran her blood covered hands over her face slowly. Magic had drained her little by little, but she didn't dare give up. Not yet, when she felt so close to achieving the achievable.
