Iris’s POV
Iris’s hands shook as she stared at the report before her in shock. “Wh…What? How can this be? Tell me this is not true!” she pleaded with the Healer, but he shook his head with a sorrowful look on his face. “I’m sorry, Luna Iris. But it’s the truth. Your daughter has the Moonbane Curse,” the Healer said gently.
It felt like her whole world came crashing down at that moment. The Moonbane Curse was one of the rarest and deadliest diseases for young werewolves, and it had no cure.
She felt like she couldn’t breathe.
She glanced at her young innocent daughter, Evie, sitting across the room. When Evie saw her looking, she gave Iris a wide smile that caused her heart to ache. Evie had so much life in her. How could this be happening to her?
“How much time does she have?” Iris asked, returning her smile with a broken heart.
He sighed. “A month,” he replied.
She whirled around to face him with wide eyes. “What? A month?! But that’s not enough!” she cried, raising her voice.
The Healer gave her a sad smile. “There’s nothing like enough time to spend with a loved one. The only thing you can do is make sure her last days are her happiest.”
Tears welled up in Iris’s eyes. Evie had been having high fever, which was very uncommon for werewolves, so she had brought her to the pack hospital for a checkup.
“What do I do now?” she cried, covering her mouth in horror. “She’s only seven! I can’t lose her!”
The Healer shook his head sadly. “I’m really sorry, Luna Iris. I really wish there was something else we could do.”
Her hands trembled as she took the test report from him. Her chest tightened as reality dawned on her. Her Evie was going to die soon.
“I don’t want to give you false hope, Luna,” the Healer sighed, “but there might be a cure for it.”
She froze. “A cure?”
Hope flooded through her, and her heart pounded in her chest as her eyes widened.
“The hospital is currently working on a cure for the Moonbane Curse. There has been very little success with the trial phase, so we're not really optimistic. But we'll keep on trying, hopefully, we might get something.”
She didn’t want to hope, but she couldn’t help it. Evie had a chance. She could get the treatment that she needed if the healers had a breakthrough.
“Mommy?” Evie’s voice came from beside her. “Are you okay? What’s wrong? Will I be fine?”
Iris wiped her eyes quickly, turning to her daughter with a fake smile. “Oh baby, of course you’ll be fine. You just need to sleep and eat a lot.” She said quickly, trying to reassure her daughter.
She bit her lips as she tried not to cry, and she collected the files from the healer.
As they walked home, Evie rambled excitedly about her eighth year birthday coming up in a month’s time, and Iris tried to control herself from crying because without a cure, Evie was going to die in a month's time also.
Evie suddenly went silent, and Iris glanced at her with concern.
“Mom?” Evie said quietly, “Can daddy come for my birthday this time? I promise, I'll be good?”
Evie rarely asked for anything else. This had always been her only wish—for her father to be present for her, but Eric was never present.
Eric Cross was the Alpha of the Blue Moon Pack, and Iris’s mate
Alpha Eric hated Evie because of Iris, and Evie was really suffering because of it. She had always craved that fatherly affection.
Iris’s heart broke, and her vision blurred with tears. At that moment she swore that she would do whatever possible to make sure that Evie got that fatherly affection, at least, until she was sure that Evie wasn’t going to die.
Immediately Iris got home, she put Evie to sleep and called Eric.
“Eric, we need to talk.” She said softly.
Iris could feel Eric’s irritation from the phone as he replied sharply. “What is it? I am very busy right now.”
She brushed off her hurt at his irritation. It was a normal occurrence, but it still hurt. “Please, you need to spend more time with Evie.” Her voice shook.
Eric scoffed in annoyance. “Iris, you know that I don't have time for any of your games. Zara needs help with her daughter, Tiffany, so I have a lot on my plate right now.”
The mention of Zara, and Tiffany, her daughter, caused Iris's heart to bleed. Zara was Eric’s first love who had disappeared several years ago, but had just returned now with her daughter, Tiffany.
Iris insisted. “But this is important, Eric.” It took everything in her to keep herself from breaking down at that moment.
He released an annoyed growl. “What could be so important that you kee—”
She cut him off. “Evie is very sick. She's going to die soon.”
Iris's POVShane stood there with a mischievous grin on his face, his arms crossed over his chest as he leaned casually against the wall opposite the door.I groaned internally. I knew I wasn’t going to hear the end of this.“So…” he drawled, his grin widening. “Where are you coming from?”“Nowhere,” I said quickly, turning back to my door, twisting the handle. “I went to take a walk to clear my head after everything that happened yesterday.”Shane snorted and the sound echoed in the empty hallway. “Oh really? Is that the story we’re going with?”“Yes,” I said firmly, finally getting my door open. I tried to step inside quickly, but Shane was faster, slipping in behind me before I could close the door in his face.“That’s interesting,” he said, his tone dripping with amusement. “Because from where I’m standing, the Alpha’s scent is all over you to the point that it’s almost nauseating. And unless I’m mistaken, you’re wrapped in his sheets.” He paused, looking me up and down. “And I’m
Iris’s POVRowan ran his hand through his hair, a gesture that I learnt meant that he was thinking carefully about what to say.“I meant what I said yesterday,” he started. “I want you, Iris. Not just physically, though that’s definitely a bonus.” He gave me a small smile. “I want a relationship with you. A real one. I want to be there for you and our child. I want to see where this goes.”“But?” I prompted, sensing there was more.“But I also don’t want to rush you,” he continued. “I know you just ended things finally with Eric yesterday. I know you’re still healing from everything that happened. I don’t want you to feel pressured into anything.”I thought about his words for a moment. He was right that I was still healing. The wounds from my marriage to Eric, from losing Evie, they were still fresh. But I also knew that I wanted this. I wanted him.“I want to try,” I said finally. “I want to see where this goes too. But you’re right that I need to take things slow. I need time to fi
Iris’s POVRowan filled me completely, and we both groaned at the sensation. He paused, giving me a moment to adjust, his forehead pressed against mine as we both breathed heavily.“You feel incredible,” he murmured, his voice strained.I couldn't form words. All I could do was pull him closer, urging him to move.He started slow, pulling out almost completely before sliding back in. Each thrust sent waves of pleasure through me, building higher and higher.“Faster,” I gasped, and he obeyed as he moved his hips with more urgency now.Our bodies moved together. His mouth found mine again, swallowing my moans as the pleasure built to an almost unbearable level.“Touch yourself,” he commanded roughly, and the authority in his voice sent another jolt of arousal through me.My hand slid between us, finding my sensitive center, and I rubbed in tight circles as he continued to thrust into me. The dual sensations were overwhelming.“That's it,” he groaned, watching me as he thrust. “I want to
Iris’s POVHis hands slid down my sides and gripped my hips, pulling me closer. I felt his arousal pressing against me, and it sent a jolt of desire straight through my core.“Rowan,” I gasped when his mouth moved from my lips to my jaw, trailing hot kisses down to my neck.“You have no idea,” he murmured against my skin, his teeth grazing it lightly, “how long I've wanted to do this.”He found a sensitive spot just below my ear, and I felt my legs go weak. My fingers tangled in his hair, holding him as he sucked gently on that spot.“We need to—” I tried to say, but the words dissolved into another moan as his hand slid up my ribcage, his thumb brushing under my breast through my dress.“We need to get to my room,” he completed my statement, but he didn't stop what he was doing. His hand cupped my breast fully now, and even through the gown, the touch sent sparks of pleasure through me.“Then we should probably start walking,” I managed to say, though my voice came out breathless and
Iris's POV“Stay down,” Rowan said calmly. But Eric was scrambling to his feet almost immediately. At this point, he was being controlled by desperation and fury. He came at Rowan again, throwing more punches that Rowan blocked easily.Yet, Eric refused to back down. So Rowan finally got tired and decided to end it.His fist shot out, slamming into Eric’s stomach. Eric doubled over, gasping, and Rowan threw another punch to Eric’s shoulder that sent him spinning.Eric tried to recover by swinging again, but Rowan saw it coming. He grabbed Eric’s arm, twisted it behind his back, and swept Eric’s legs out from under him. Eric went down hard, his face smacking the floor.“I said stay down,” Rowan repeated, his voice was harder now.Eric struggled against Rowan’s hold, trying to push himself up, but Rowan kept him pinned with one hand pressed firmly against his shoulder blades.“Let me go!” Eric shouted, his voice was muffled as he was pressed to the floor. “Let me—”Rowan released him an
Iris’s POVThe woman he loves.Did he just say that?I stared at Rowan, unable to breathe or even think. All I could do was stand there as his words echoed through my mind.Eric was the first to break the silence. “Love?” he scoffed, but there was something desperate in his voice now. “You barely know her. You’ve known her for what, a few months? That’s not love. That’s infatuation. That’s—”“Don’t,” Rowan said softly, but his voice was firm. “Don’t tell me what I feel.”He stepped closer, his eyes fixed on me, and I felt my breath catch as I stared into his intense gaze.“I love her,” Rowan said again, louder this time, like he was saying it to the whole world. “I love the way she fights even when she’s exhausted. I love the way she stands up for herself and refuses to be pushed around.”My vision blurred with tears.“I love the fire in her eyes when she’s angry,” Rowan continued, his voice strong and steady. “I love the way she tries to hide her smile when something amuses her, and
