Toria. Open the door."

The voice had changed. The anger was gone. What was left was thin and strange.

She turned off the tap. Her legs were unsteady as she crossed the tiles, and the lock scraped loudly in the silence. She opened the door.

Chriss stood in the corridor with the phone hanging from his hand. His face was perfectly blank, and it frightened her more than any rage.

"He's gone," he said.

  • Too Late, Mr Billionaire    A dying man’s wish

The call ended, and Chriss's face closed like a door.Toria watched it happen. Seconds ago his hand had been warm on her stomach, and a tear had been drying on the sheet between them. Now he stood at the window with his back to her, thumb flicking across his phone, booking a flight in the flat, efficient way he did everything."How bad is it?" she asked."Days.""Chriss...""Mrs. Brandt will stay with you." He didn't turn around. "Dr. Mehra's number is on the fridge. You don't leave that bed unless it's the bathroom.""I'll come with you.""No.""He's your father.""And you're a patient." He pocketed the phone. "You've been told what happens if you move too much. You're not flying anywhere."The baby gave a small, uncertain kick under her ribs. Toria pressed a hand over it, and all of it fell away, the hospital, the whispered I'm sorry, the strange tenderness of the last days. It was like watching someone close a book she'd only just been allowed to read."You never told me how sick h

She woke to a ceiling she didn't recognise.Beeping. A plastic bracelet on her wrist. A drip taped to the back of her hand. And a hand clamped around her other one, so tightly she could feel the pulse in it.Chriss sat on a plastic chair pulled so close to the bed that his knees pressed against the mattress. He hadn't shaved. His jacket was gone, his shirt was crumpled and stained, and his eyes, when they lifted to hers, were the eyes of a man who had been awake for a very long time."The baby," she said, and her voice cracked."Is fine." He said it fast, almost a gasp. "Heartbeat's strong. Dr. Mehra's been in twice. They did every scan there is."Relief hit so hard she shut her eyes. When she opened them, he was crying. He wasn't making a sound. He was just sitting there with tears running down his face, holding her hand against his mouth, shoulders shaking. She had never seen him cry. She had never imagined he could."I thought," he said. "In the car park. I saw the blood and I thou

  • Too Late, Mr Billionaire    What the doctor offered

The waiting room smelled of antiseptic and lilies. Toria sat with her hands twisted in her lap while Chriss filled in the forms, his handwriting uncharacteristically ragged."You're writing in the wrong box," she said."What?""That's the allergy section."He stared at the page. Crossed it out. His hand shook slightly, and she watched him notice it and clench his fist to stop it.He's afraid, she realised. Chriss is actually afraid.Dr. Mehra was brisk, kind, and unimpressed by money. "This is a routine test, but it does involve a needle, so I'll need you to stay very still, Toria. Your husband can hold your hand."He took it before the doctor finished the sentence. The room dimmed. The ultrasound screen glowed. Toria stared at the ceiling tiles and counted them, forty-two, forty-three, while the cold gel spread across her stomach and the long needle slid in. A pinch. Then pressure. Then nothing, and the quiet, enormous waiting."Breathe," Chriss whispered. His forehead was damp. "Loo

Alexa kissed the air beside Toria’s cheek.“You’ve cut your hair,” he observed, looking at her as though the change required an explanation. “Brave. Is it permanent?”Toria forced a polite smile. “Hello, Father.”“Don’t hover in the doorway. Come in. It’s your house, isn’t it? Or so I’m told.”He walked past her without waiting for an invitation, carrying himself with the confidence of a man who had never questioned whether he belonged somewhere. Perhaps he didn’t need to. Toria had never bothered to check whose name was on the deed.Chriss shut the door behind them.“You didn’t call,” he said.Alexa turned slightly, his expression almost amused. “A man shouldn’t need an appointment to see his grandchild.”His eyes moved briefly towards Toria’s stomach before returning to Chriss.“Chriss. You look tired. Fatherhood agrees with you already.”Chriss offered no response.Dinner was a performance, and everyone at the table seemed to know their parts.Mrs. Brandt served roast lamb, careful
