I felt my heart tighten in my chest as I watched with horror, my fiancé and my best friend, having sex in the hotel. They were so engrossed and didn’t even care that they were half naked and anyone who cared, could see them from the glass wall of the building’s fourth floor. Sonia was pressed to the wall while Dennis worked her insides from behind. I couldn’t hear her moans but with every second that I imagined it, my heart sank heavily. Tears flooded my face as I flashed into the last two years of my life when I met Dennis. He was everything I wanted and more. Tall, handsome, broad shoulders and chest, I couldn’t stop drooling as he pulled me into a hug. For a moment there, my heart forgot how to beat, and the moment he smiled and introduced himself, I knew I was going to marry him. I had fallen hard in love with him. Freya decided to try love again after several heartbreaks, she thought Dennis was different but reality dawned on her when she caught him cheating with her best friend, Sonia, the same person who matchmade them in the first place. I felt my heart tighten in my chest as I watched with horror, my fiancé and my best friend having sex in the hotel. They were so engrossed and couldn’t even care less that they were half naked and anyone who cared, could see them from the glass wall of the building’s fourth floor. Sonia was pressed to the wall while Dennis worked her insides from behind. I couldn’t hear her moans but with every second that I imagined it, my heart sank the more.
Before then, Dennis and I had been talking online for two months. Sonia matchmade us, and though I didn’t want another relationship at the time, she had convinced me to give love another chance. They were high school friends, and she had claimed he saw my pictures on her phone and begged that she introduce me to him.
I had been burned in my past relationships, they all just wanted me for my dad’s billions, so after a couple of heartbreaks that always left me shattered, I decided to just focus on myself.
“Maybe love isn’t my thing. Not everyone gets lucky, you know.” I had said amid tears to Sonia after my last relationship ended because I wouldn’t give my new car to him.
“Oh my goodness, Freya, please don’t say that. You’re the sweetest person I know and trust me, you’re going to find love soon. It’s going to be sweet, intense, and you’re going to be thankful that none of these worked. That’s how much that man is going to love you.” Sonia had tried to console me.
I met Sonia in college. We bumped into each other on our first day on campus. She explained how her parents were poor, and she was on scholarship and couldn’t even afford a place yet. Meanwhile, the school had given me a whole building because of my dad’s huge donations to the school. I then asked her to move in with me and that was it. She became my best friend from then.
It was our graduation pictures that Dennis saw on her phone and prompted him to seek after me. I was skeptical at first, but from the first night when we talked on the phone, I had been hooked. I fell for his sweet husky voice and words, and when I saw him, I fell harder.
He ticked all my boxes in a weird way. He was everything I wanted in a man other than one thing. Money. He was still struggling at his low-level intern job, but I didn’t care.
I begged my dad to give him a job in his company, and he had warned that I stay away from Dennis. There was something about him that put my dad off, but being his sweet only child, he couldn’t say no to me. He could never.
Dennis was hired, and everything was going well with us until a year ago, when I became the manager of the company. He started acting cold, but I was too stupid in love and never read much into it. Instead, I even found his cold attitude towards me special.
Never did I ever imagine it was because he was cheating on me with my best friend. As for Sonia, why introduce a man to me when you knew you would still snatch him from me? What kind of sick behavior is that?
I swiped open my phone and stared at the text that lured me to the hotel. It'd been a while since Dennis and I were intimate, so I was at home, making plans to set the mood for when he got back. I was trying out my lingerie when I got an anonymous text, asking me to come to a hotel.
I thought it was Dennis. He was the only one who could do that. I stupidly thought he was trying to surprise me too.
“Maybe he has noticed the friction between us and wants to spice things up.” I muttered to myself as I hopped into the car and drove straight to the hotel.
I was right in a way though. It was indeed a surprise. Just not the one I expected.
I hurried upstairs but just before I turned the last corner, I looked up and my heart stopped.
It was Dennis and Sonia, tongue deep in each other’s throat as they struggled to get into the room before they tear each other apart. I stood there, watched as they giggled and ran into the room like two teenagers in love.
Hot tears poured down my face again as I read the text for the umpteenth time.
“Heartbroken?’ a strange voice rose beside me.
I quickly looked back, and my eyes squeezed into a frown.
“And you are?” I quizzed.
“I must say, he’s actually good. Still lacking in some areas though,” He replied, deliberately ignoring me.
I wasn’t in the mood for another man-drama, so I got up and turned to leave.
"Not going to stay for the whole show?" He teased, following me like an annoying jerk I know his type to be.
"Leave me alone! I don’t know who you are, so leave me the hell alone!!" I yelled at him. All the pain and anger that had built up in me, bursting out all at once.
“Even if I could help you get the revenge I know you want?’ I stopped once I heard this and turned back.
“What revenge? What are you talking about?’ I asked.
"You know why he's doing this, right? Because you got engaged with him, and he thinks he got you. Your father's business is going to take a huge blow if you break up with him now." He chuckled, tucking his hands into his pockets like an annoying boss.
“So?’ I rolled my eyes.
"Marry me."
"What?!" I exclaimed while my eyes got big as saucers.
"I need a marriage to take over my old man's business, and you need a new fiancé to get out of your disgusting trouble. I’ll get you the revenge you want if you marry me.” He said firmly while I burst into laughter.
I was shocked out of my mind, but a laugh was all the reaction I could pull out of me.
“First, you’re a total stranger, I don’t know why you think I need your help and I honestly don’t care. Second, thanks for the joke. I really needed that laugh.” I said, and then turned to leave.
This time, he didn’t try to stop me and I didn’t look back either. As soon as I got into the car, my phone beeped. It was another text from the anonymous sender.
“The offer is still open, sleep over it tonight. I will call to get your response in the morning. You asked who I was. It's Victor Whitmore. You can g****e it and write out any question you have. I will answer them on our first date. Sleep well… wifey.” My face widened in shock as I read the text.
“Who is this weirdo?” I thought to myself as I looked up just in time for the car in front of me to flash its headlights.
It was the same stranger. Victor. He smiled and waved me goodbye before zooming off. I stayed in the car for about five minutes more, trying to make sense of what was happening.
I couldn’t fathom it. My brain was blank. The graphic scenes of my best friend and fiancé had clouded my reasoning, so I started the car and zoomed off.
The drive back home was hell, it seemed like it would never end. My mind kept dragging me back to the disgusting scene and a lot of regrets started popping up in my head. I had no evidence. Dennis would deny cheating, and it’s his word against mine with no proof to back my claim. Maybe I should have stopped them, maybe I should have taken pictures or videos, I should have screamed, knocked down the door, pounced on Sonia for betraying me, and cussed at Dennis for denying me sex for months only to lust after another woman’s body…
I got home, took a cold shower and changed into my lingerie. I was still going ahead with the initial plan to spice things up. Only this time, I was giving Dennis a last chance to come clean, apologize, and do right by me.
I forced out a smile as the door opened and Dennis strode in. legs wide open, cleavage bulging, I winked at him and beckoned him to come to me.
“What’s this babe?” he smiled.
“What does it look like?” I answered, and then licked my lips to give him some context, even though it was already obvious.
“I’m exhausted, babe, maybe some other time, not tonight please.”
“I know work has been hectic, but it’s been six months babe, I miss you, I want you.” I said seductively and then pulled him to sit on the bed.
I moved to kiss him, and he pushed me back, holding me off so I don’t come back.
“Are you cheating on me, Dennis? Who is she?”
I felt like throwing up when he acted shocked, it was disgusting to watch him attempt to lie.
“I can’t believe you right now. I’m doing everything to satisfy you and just because I said no to sex, I’m automatically cheating? What exactly do women want? Is it a crime to love my woman so much that I work my ass off just to give her the best life? Is this what I get for all my sacrifices?’ as I watched him gaslight me, reality dawned on me.
Dennis has always been like this, always gaslighting and making me feel like he was doing me a favor by being with me. I was the one who chose not to see the handwriting.
“See? I even stopped on the way and got you this…” he then brought out a gift box, which he pushed into my hands.
“Would I have the time for this if I was cheating? Men who cheat don’t love or respect their women, and you know I’m not that man. I love and respect you, so don’t go about having silly ideas. I’m just really stressed out with all the work at the office. Once my next project pulls through, then we can have all the s*x in the world.” He didn’t wait for a response, he just kissed my cheek and slid right into the bed…
Victor“Babies, you mean?” I just stood there, frozen, trying to make sense of what I’d heard. Stacey blinked beside me, her mouth slightly open. We both glanced at each other like we were silently confirming that we hadn’t misheard.“Wait,” I said, finally finding my voice, though it came out barely above a whisper. “Did you just say... babies?”The doctor nodded, calmly, too calmly for what he was delivering. “Yes. Twins.”Twins. Jesus Christ. She is carrying twins.I felt like I couldn’t breathe. My heart was already struggling to keep up with everything happening around me. From the time I got Stacey’s call till now, I hadn’t been okay and now this? Stacey stepped forward, voice steadier than mine. “Are they… okay?”The doctor’s face shifted slightly, a hesitation in his eyes. That pause told me everything before he even spoke.“They’re critical,” he said. “Extremely critical. We couldn’t do anything during the surgery without risking Freya. Her body is weak, and she’s still in a
StaceyI let the sun sneak into the room and warm my face before I opened my eyes. Today was my day off and I don’t have to worry about anything other than being wrapped sweetly in Ryan’s arms.He was already awake, of course. He always is. I don’t know how he manages to look like some dreamy movie scene every morning, but there he was, shirtless, scrolling through his phone with bedhead and a dimple showing.“Good morning, sleepyhead,” he said with a grin, glancing over when I stretched and buried my face into his chest.“You’re warm. I hate how warm you are,” I mumbled.“And yet you’re always clinging to me like a koala,” he teased.“I’m cold-blooded. You knew what you were signing up for.”He chuckled, kissed the top of my head, and then rolled out of bed. “I made you breakfast, by the way. Don’t get too excited, it’s just eggs and toast. I think I used salt instead of sugar in the coffee, but who knows? It’s an adventure.”I propped myself up on my elbow, raising a brow. “You made
FreyaWe are finally back, and I should’ve been exhausted, but something about being home, about being here with him made everything feel light.Victor had his hand on the small of my back as we made our way to the house, our suitcases trailing behind us. I leaned into him slightly, not even realizing how naturally I did that now. Iceland might’ve been magic, but this felt like life beginning again.“You slept through like ninety percent of that flight,” he teased, his voice low and playful.I tilted my head and smirked up at him. “That’s because I was with someone I trust. A man who’s literally never let me down.”“Oh?” he raised a brow. “Your man?”I nudged him gently with my elbow. “My man.”He laughed and leaned down, kissing the top of my head. “I like the sound of that.”I didn’t say it, but I did too. More than I could ever really explain. When he opened the door and we stepped into the house, it was like walking into a breath of fresh air. Stacey had clearly gone above and bey
FreyaI didn’t want the night to end. We will be flying back home in the morning, and there is this bittersweet knot sitting in my chest the entire day. Iceland had felt like a dream, like this magical little pocket of peace that neither of us knew we needed until we got here. And now it was slipping through our fingers. So when Victor looked at me after dinner and said, “Let’s make tonight count,” I nodded without hesitation. We had no plans, reservations or even set any agenda. It was just the two of us and whatever the night wanted to give.We started by walking and the streets were quieter than usual. The cold was settling gently over the town like a soft blanket. My gloved hand was in his, and every time he squeezed it, I felt something warm bloom in my chest.“We really did this,” I said, glancing up at him as our boots crunched softly against the snow-dusted pavement. He smiled, looking down at me. “Yeah. We needed it, huh?”“More than I realized.”He stopped walking and looked
Sonia I woke up to a hum, a soft, steady hum of machines, and something warm pressing against my arm. My eyelids were heavy, like someone had glued them shut, but I forced them open. The lights were low, not like the fluorescent prison lights, but softer, gentler, like early morning. I blinked again, slower this time, and turned my head. There were white walls, pale blue curtains and a beeping sound near my ear. There was a nurse sitting by my bed, scribbling on a chart. I didn’t understand where I was at first so I tried to sit up.“Whoa… no, no, no,” the nurse said quickly, standing and placing a hand on my shoulder. “You need to relax, sweetheart. You’ve been unconscious for over a day.” She said calmly. “Where… where am I?” I croaked. My throat was dry like sandpaper. Even talking hurt.“You’re at County General,” she said gently. “They brought you in from the prison. The clinic there couldn’t handle your injuries.”Everything started rushing back at once… Camila, the fight, fis
SoniaIt has been a week since my mom came to check up on me and promised to get me a new lawyer. Every day since then, I’d stare at the ceiling in my bunk, pace the small patch of floor in my cell, and jump every time the guard passed like maybe, maybe they were coming to tell me my new lawyer had arrived. But nothing came, no calls or news. It was just complete silence. And silence inside a place like this? It eats at you. It’s like being buried alive with your own thoughts. My cellmate started asking if I was okay on the third day. I lied and said I was fine. On the fifth day, she stopped asking. After a week of no news still, I couldn’t take it anymore. The payphone in the common area had a line, like it always did, this time, it was even so long but I didn’t care. I stood there, arms crossed, biting the inside of my cheek so I wouldn’t say something stupid and get written up again. When I finally got my turn, my hands were shaking so bad I nearly dropped the receiver.I dialed he
