I felt my heart tighten in my chest as I watched with horror, my fiancé and my best friend, having sex in the hotel. They were so engrossed and didn’t even care that they were half naked and anyone who cared, could see them from the glass wall of the building’s fourth floor. Sonia was pressed to the wall while Dennis worked her insides from behind. I couldn’t hear her moans but with every second that I imagined it, my heart sank heavily. Tears flooded my face as I flashed into the last two years of my life when I met Dennis. He was everything I wanted and more. Tall, handsome, broad shoulders and chest, I couldn’t stop drooling as he pulled me into a hug. For a moment there, my heart forgot how to beat, and the moment he smiled and introduced himself, I knew I was going to marry him. I had fallen hard in love with him. Freya decided to try love again after several heartbreaks, she thought Dennis was different but reality dawned on her when she caught him cheating with her best friend, Sonia, the same person who matchmade them in the first place. Actually, Dennis wasn’t cheating on her with Sonia, he was cheating on Sonia with her! The two have been dating for over five years, and she never knew. I felt my heart tighten in my chest as I watched with horror, my fiancé and my best friend having sex in the hotel. They were so engrossed and couldn’t even care less that they were half naked and anyone who cared, could see them from the glass wall of the building’s fourth floor. Sonia was pressed to the wall while Dennis worked her insides from behind. I couldn’t hear her moans but with every second that I imagined it, my heart sank the more.
Before then, Dennis and I had been talking online for two months. Sonia matchmade us, and though I didn’t want another relationship at the time, she had convinced me to give love another chance. They were high school friends, and she had claimed he saw my pictures on her phone and begged that she introduce me to him.
I had been burned in my past relationships, they all just wanted me for my dad’s billions, so after a couple of heartbreaks that always left me shattered, I decided to just focus on myself.
“Maybe love isn’t my thing. Not everyone gets lucky, you know.” I had said amid tears to Sonia after my last relationship ended because I wouldn’t give my new car to him.
“Oh my goodness, Freya, please don’t say that. You’re the sweetest person I know and trust me, you’re going to find love soon. It’s going to be sweet, intense, and you’re going to be thankful that none of these worked. That’s how much that man is going to love you.” Sonia had tried to console me.
I met Sonia in college. We bumped into each other on our first day on campus. She explained how her parents were poor, and she was on scholarship and couldn’t even afford a place yet. Meanwhile, the school had given me a whole building because of my dad’s huge donations to the school. I then asked her to move in with me and that was it. She became my best friend from then.
It was our graduation pictures that Dennis saw on her phone and prompted him to seek after me. I was skeptical at first, but from the first night when we talked on the phone, I had been hooked. I fell for his sweet husky voice and words, and when I saw him, I fell harder.
He ticked all my boxes in a weird way. He was everything I wanted in a man other than one thing. Money. He was still struggling at his low-level intern job, but I didn’t care.
I begged my dad to give him a job in his company, and he had warned that I stay away from Dennis. There was something about him that put my dad off, but being his sweet only child, he couldn’t say no to me. He could never.
Dennis was hired, and everything was going well with us until a year ago, when I became the manager of the company. He started acting cold, but I was too stupid in love and never read much into it. Instead, I even found his cold attitude towards me special.
Never did I ever imagine it was because he was cheating on me with my best friend. As for Sonia, why introduce a man to me when you knew you would still snatch him from me? What kind of sick behavior is that?
I swiped open my phone and stared at the text that lured me to the hotel. It'd been a while since Dennis and I were intimate, so I was at home, making plans to set the mood for when he got back. I was trying out my lingerie when I got an anonymous text, asking me to come to a hotel.
I thought it was Dennis. He was the only one who could do that. I stupidly thought he was trying to surprise me too.
“Maybe he has noticed the friction between us and wants to spice things up.” I muttered to myself as I hopped into the car and drove straight to the hotel.
I was right in a way though. It was indeed a surprise. Just not the one I expected.
I hurried upstairs but just before I turned the last corner, I looked up and my heart stopped.
It was Dennis and Sonia, tongue deep in each other’s throat as they struggled to get into the room before they tear each other apart. I stood there, watched as they giggled and ran into the room like two teenagers in love.
Hot tears poured down my face again as I read the text for the umpteenth time.
“Heartbroken?’ a strange voice rose beside me.
I quickly looked back, and my eyes squeezed into a frown.
“And you are?” I quizzed.
“I must say, he’s actually good. Still lacking in some areas though,” He replied, deliberately ignoring me.
I wasn’t in the mood for another man-drama, so I got up and turned to leave.
"Not going to stay for the whole show?" He teased, following me like an annoying jerk I know his type to be.
"Leave me alone! I don’t know who you are, so leave me the hell alone!!" I yelled at him. All the pain and anger that had built up in me, bursting out all at once.
“Even if I could help you get the revenge I know you want?’ I stopped once I heard this and turned back.
“What revenge? What are you talking about?’ I asked.
"You know why he's doing this, right? Because you got engaged with him, and he thinks he got you. Your father's business is going to take a huge blow if you break up with him now." He chuckled, tucking his hands into his pockets like an annoying boss.
“So?’ I rolled my eyes.
"Marry me."
"What?!" I exclaimed while my eyes got big as saucers.
"I need a marriage to take over my old man's business, and you need a new fiancé to get out of your disgusting trouble. I’ll get you the revenge you want if you marry me.” He said firmly while I burst into laughter.
I was shocked out of my mind, but a laugh was all the reaction I could pull out of me.
“First, you’re a total stranger, I don’t know why you think I need your help and I honestly don’t care. Second, thanks for the joke. I really needed that laugh.” I said, and then turned to leave.
This time, he didn’t try to stop me and I didn’t look back either. As soon as I got into the car, my phone beeped. It was another text from the anonymous sender.
“The offer is still open, sleep over it tonight. I will call to get your response in the morning. You asked who I was. It's Victor Whitmore. You can g****e it and write out any question you have. I will answer them on our first date. Sleep well… wifey.” My face widened in shock as I read the text.
“Who is this weirdo?” I thought to myself as I looked up just in time for the car in front of me to flash its headlights.
It was the same stranger. Victor. He smiled and waved me goodbye before zooming off. I stayed in the car for about five minutes more, trying to make sense of what was happening.
I couldn’t fathom it. My brain was blank. The graphic scenes of my best friend and fiancé had clouded my reasoning, so I started the car and zoomed off.
The drive back home was hell, it seemed like it would never end. My mind kept dragging me back to the disgusting scene and a lot of regrets started popping up in my head. I had no evidence. Dennis would deny cheating, and it’s his word against mine with no proof to back my claim. Maybe I should have stopped them, maybe I should have taken pictures or videos, I should have screamed, knocked down the door, pounced on Sonia for betraying me, and cussed at Dennis for denying me sex for months only to lust after another woman’s body…
I got home, took a cold shower and changed into my lingerie. I was still going ahead with the initial plan to spice things up. Only this time, I was giving Dennis a last chance to come clean, apologize, and do right by me.
I forced out a smile as the door opened and Dennis strode in. legs wide open, cleavage bulging, I winked at him and beckoned him to come to me.
“What’s this babe?” he smiled.
“What does it look like?” I answered, and then licked my lips to give him some context, even though it was already obvious.
“I’m exhausted, babe, maybe some other time, not tonight please.”
“I know work has been hectic, but it’s been six months babe, I miss you, I want you.” I said seductively and then pulled him to sit on the bed.
I moved to kiss him, and he pushed me back, holding me off so I don’t come back.
“Are you cheating on me, Dennis? Who is she?”
I felt like throwing up when he acted shocked, it was disgusting to watch him attempt to lie.
“I can’t believe you right now. I’m doing everything to satisfy you and just because I said no to sex, I’m automatically cheating? What exactly do women want? Is it a crime to love my woman so much that I work my ass off just to give her the best life? Is this what I get for all my sacrifices?’ as I watched him gaslight me, reality dawned on me.
Dennis has always been like this, always gaslighting and making me feel like he was doing me a favor by being with me. I was the one who chose not to see the handwriting.
“See? I even stopped on the way and got you this…” he then brought out a gift box, which he pushed into my hands.
“Would I have the time for this if I was cheating? Men who cheat don’t love or respect their women, and you know I’m not that man. I love and respect you, so don’t go about having silly ideas. I’m just really stressed out with all the work at the office. Once my next project pulls through, then we can have all the s*x in the world.” He didn’t wait for a response, he just kissed my cheek and slid right into the bed…
DennisI honestly didn’t want to look at the screen, but the minute I heard the music and saw the soft lighting of the camera sweeping across white roses and crystal chandeliers, I knew it was Freya’s wedding again. Every damn day for the past week, some news channel or entertainment show found a new clip, a new angle, a fresh commentary to air. It was either her dress, the venue, vows or even the food. The guards here thought it was entertaining and some of the inmates found it amusing too, watching me squirm while the woman I destroyed stood there glowing, radiant, married to someone else.Victor Whitmore… I used to call him “the enemy” but now I just call him “the better man”. I sat on my bunk, staring at the tiny screen nailed to the common room wall, the volume low but clear enough to hear her laugh. And God, that sound used to be mine. I used to make her laugh like that.I watched the way Victor looked at her, like he’d waited all his life just to earn her smile and I felt som
FreyaThree days... that was how long I had to wait before my husband finally agreed that we would go on our honeymoon. It felt like a lifetime because I wanted to get away immediately after the wedding. Victor insisted we wait just so I could catch my breath. You would think I did something besides looking pretty on our wedding day, but my darling husband wouldn’t let us leave unless I’ve had enough rest and fully recovered from the stress. I knew he was right though, but that didn’t stop me from pouting dramatically every time he reminded me.But it turned out well anyway, because I got to use the three days well. We didn’t have a specific plan for the honeymoon and were just going to freestyle it. But in three days, I was able to come up with a fantastic plan. Our honeymoon would be a month and we’d be visiting three countries, Marrakech in Morocco, Maui in Hawaii, and then end it in the land of love, Paris…As we stepped off his jet and the warm, honeyed air of Marrakech wrapped
VictorI don’t think I’ve ever smiled this much in my entire life. Freya’s hand was tucked inside mine as we walked into the reception hall and the whole place echoed with cheers and claps, like they had been holding in their excitement until they saw us again. My eyes didn’t leave her the whole time. She looked like a dream and I couldn’t get enough of her. It wasn’t the first time I was seeing the wedding dress on her, I was there when Nia brought it for the first fitting but it was still unfinished then. Of course, it was stunning then but now, it was magical. My wife was literally glowing in her wedding dress. She waved at a few familiar faces, still holding tightly to my arm, and I watched her soak it all in. She deserves it all and even more.“How are you feeling?” I asked as I leaned down a little, voice low in her ear. She turned to me with a grin that had just the right mix of mischief and emotion. “Like I’ve waited all my life to be right here.”That answer did something t
FreyaIt’s finally my wedding day and I couldn’t stop staring at myself because somehow, against all odds, I am still standing, breathing and alive. And today, I am going to be someone’s wife. Victor’s wife.I looked at my reflection in the full-length mirror, my hands resting gently against the fabric that hugged me like a second skin. My dress… God, my wedding dress.Nia had done it. She hadn’t just made me a wedding gown, she made me feel like a woman again. A whole one… not broken, bruised and certainly not someone who had almost died in a pool of her own blood just a few weeks ago. But someone who was still capable of being beautiful, strong and loved. She honestly did a perfect job with the dress. The satin was a rich ivory that glowed under the soft lights. The neckline was soft and romantic off-shoulder, hugging my collarbones delicately. The bodice cinched at just the right place, with intricate beadwork that curved like vines around my ribs. The lower part had layers of tull
FreyaI woke up feeling slightly better than I did yesterday. The dull ache in my side was still there, but it had softened. It was like my body had finally made peace with the pain. The morning light slipped through the half-open blinds, bathing the room in a golden hue that made everything feel softer and calmer. I reached for the blanket, pulling it up a little. I wasn’t cold… I just needed the comfort and warmth… something to hold me since Victor wasn’t beside me. I’m sure he’d be in the kitchen making breakfast for me.Just then, the door opened gently and the nurse stepped in, wearing a small, professional smile. I had even forgotten that I agreed to a nurse coming everyday to check on me, but I trust Victor not to ever forget."Good morning, Miss Freya," the nurse greeted softly, placing her bag down and walking to the side of the bed. "How did you sleep?"I gave her a small nod. "Better than I expected."She smiled again. "That’s good. Let’s take a look at those wounds, shall
FreyaI could see the worry in Victor’s eyes the entire morning. He didn’t say much, but it was there in the way he kept pacing around the room, in the way his jaw clenched every time I so much as shifted in bed.He wanted me to stay at the hospital for a few more days. I knew it. He hadn’t said it yet, but I could feel it as clearly as if he had screamed it from the roof.So I sat up slowly, ignoring the slight pull of pain in my side, and looked at him where he stood by the window.“I want to go home today.” I let out slowly while he turned around instantly, brows furrowed like I’d just told him I was going skydiving.“Babe, no, you can’t do that.” He immediately countered.“I’m serious,” I said, keeping my voice calm, steady. “I want to leave. I don’t want to be here anymore.”“You just came out of a coma two days ago,” he said, moving to the edge of the bed like he thought I might pass out mid-sentence. “Freya, this isn’t something we rush. The doctors…”“Already cleared me for di
