“It would be better if the two of you got a divorce… just for a while.”
The words shot out of Efendi’s mouth—Anna’s adoptive father—like lightning cracking straight across her chest. Anna froze. The world seemed to stall mid-spin. She stared at Efendi, waiting for him to take it back, to laugh, to say it was all some twisted joke. But he didn’t. He was serious. Dead serious. “Dad… don’t joke like that,” Anna whispered, her voice trembling, barely audible. “I’m not joking, Anna. Lusi is pregnant. And you know what that means—she’s a model.” Efendi’s gaze was sharp, immovable. “Rendy has to marry her. It’s the only way to keep our family from being disgraced.” Anna blinked at him, horrified. “She got pregnant by another man—why should my husband be the one to marry her?” Her voice rose in disbelief; none of this made sense. “Lusi’s boyfriend refuses to take responsibility. So please, Anna, listen to us,” Renata murmured softly, almost in a whisper. “We’ve raised you like our own daughter for years. Now we need your help. Think of it as… repayment.” Repayment? The word cut deeper than any blade. Rendy sat beside her, silent. Too silent. Anna turned to her husband—still clinging to the wild hope that he would refuse, defend her, say anything. But his lips stayed sealed. Lusi began to cry softly. “Anna… please. I don’t want my career ruined. I’m begging you…” And finally, Rendy spoke. “For now… we need to separate. Once everything calms down, I promise… I’ll come back to you.” A sharp, painful crack tore through Anna’s chest. Her breath caught. He had actually said it. “Ren, what are you talking about?” Anna’s voice spiked, raw with hurt. “Our marriage is fine! Why are you agreeing to this?!” “Because our marriage is fine, sweetheart,” Rendy said, reaching for her hand. “That’s why we’ll come back together later.” “No!” Anna’s voice broke. “I will never agree to a divorce!” “Don’t be selfish, Anna!” Efendi snapped, as if she were the one destroying the room. Before Anna could answer, Lusi’s body suddenly collapsed. “LUSI!” Renata screamed, frantically grabbing her daughter. Rendy jumped to his feet, his hand slipping from Anna’s like it had never mattered at all. Anna called out softly, “Ren…” but he didn’t look back. Not even once. “Anna, check on her! Quickly!” Rendy barked as he lifted Lusi toward the bedroom. “Anna! Why are you just standing there?!” he shouted—his voice cutting toward her for the first time. And all of it… for another woman. Another woman. A blade twisted through her chest. “Stop acting like a child, Anna! You’re a doctor!” Efendi snapped so harshly that Anna flinched, her body locking up. With unsteady steps, Anna examined Lusi. The room buzzed with panic—but the sharpest, deepest worry came from Rendy. The way he watched Lusi made Anna want to scream. “How is she?” Rendy asked, breathless, desperate. “She’s… just exhausted,” Anna murmured. A moment later, Lusi’s eyes fluttered open—and she burst into hysterical sobs. “I don’t want to live anymore! I want to die!” she cried. Rendy lunged toward her. His arm struck Anna hard, knocking her off balance. Whether it was intentional or not—the pain was real. “Lusi, calm down… we’ll get married. I promise,” Rendy whispered to her, his voice gentler than any tone he had used with Anna in weeks. Anna stared at him, wide-eyed. “Ren?!” “Don’t be selfish, Anna! Lusi’s unstable!” Rendy barked again. “Rendy’s right, Anna. Please understand her condition,” Efendi added without sparing a glance in her direction. Anna held her breath. Her throat burned. “Why… why is it always me who has to understand her? Why won’t any of you try to understand me?” Lusi screamed again. “You’re right! We’re all selfish! Fine, let me die then!” She grabbed a fruit knife from the bedside table. “Lusi! Stop! Stop!” Rendy pulled her into his arms—so tightly, so protectively—as if she were someone he couldn’t bear to lose. Anna stepped back, slowly, her body numb. The tears she’d been holding finally broke free. She watched her husband… holding another woman. Protecting another woman. Fighting for another woman. “You all should leave,” Rendy said without looking at her, still clinging to Lusi. “I’ll calm her down.” “Anna, come on…” Renata tugged gently on her hand. But Anna didn’t move. She couldn’t. Rendy turned his head just enough to shoot her a sharp look. “Don’t be childish, Anna!”Liam’s hand tightened around Anna’s waist, holding her in place as if he feared she might disappear the moment he let go. Anna’s arms slipped around his neck, pulling him closer. They were in the bedroom now, beneath the soft glow of a dim lamp that cast gentle shadows along the walls. Anna lay beneath him, her breathing growing uneven, her chest rising and falling faster with each passing second.“I want you, Honey…” Liam murmured, his voice low and rough, thick with everything he had been holding back.Without waiting for an answer, he lowered his head and captured her lips. The kiss was deep, full of emotion—more than just desire. There was longing in it, and something deeper, something he had never been able to put into words.Anna didn’t hesitate to respond. Her fingers curled into his hair, holding on as though afraid the moment might slip away. She closed her eyes, surrendering to the warmth he gave her.As Liam s
“Dr. Anna!” Nina called out, hurrying after her just as Anna was about to step into her office. The sound of her rushed footsteps echoed through the hospital corridor, which had begun to quiet as evening settled in. Behind her, Erika followed at a calmer pace, though still heading in the same direction.Anna paused and turned, one brow lifting slightly. “What is it?” she asked.Nina stopped in front of her, catching her breath before speaking. There was a hopeful look on her face. “Do you have plans tonight, Doctor? Erika and I are going out for dinner. Do you want to join us?”Anna offered a small smile, though a flicker of reluctance crossed her eyes. “I don’t think I can tonight. I’m sorry.”Nina’s expression dimmed for a moment, but Erika gently nudged her. “It’s okay, Doctor. There’s always another time,” Erika said casually.Never one to give up so easily, Nina narrowed her eyes playfully. “Are you meeting your boyfriend?” she guess
“Morning,” Liam said as Anna slowly opened her eyes. “Morning,” Anna replied, her voice still slightly hoarse. She blinked a few times, trying to shake off the last traces of sleep. “Have you been up long?” “About five minutes,” Liam answered casually. Then, almost as an afterthought, he added, “Sorry about last night—the bouquet was red roses, not white.” Anna smiled softly. “It’s okay. I like them.” And she realized, in that quiet moment, that it wasn’t the color of the flowers she cared about… but who had given them to her. Liam leaned down and pressed a brief kiss to her lips—warm, gentle—before pulling away. “I’m going to shower,” he said, getting out of bed. Anna simply nodded, her gaze following his back until he disappeared behind the bathroom door. “I need to eat a lot today… I’ve got three surgeries scheduled,” Anna murmured as
When Anna opened the door to her room, a warm smile instantly spread across her face. Resting neatly on the bed was a bouquet of red roses, their petals fresh and fragrant as if they had just been picked. Her steps felt lighter as she approached, her fingers gently reaching out to lift the bouquet with care.Tucked between the stems was a small card. Anna opened it slowly. One simple word was written there—“Sorry.”And yet, somehow, that single word made her smile even wider, filling her chest with a warmth she couldn’t quite explain.Without thinking, Anna picked up her phone, snapped a photo of the bouquet, and sent it to Liam.“I’m home.”The message went through, her smile still lingering as she let out a soft chuckle.“He’s kind of cute,” she murmured under her breath. It didn’t stop there. Anna uploaded the photo to her social media as well, adding nothing but a simple red heart emoji as the caption—yet it said more than words ever could about how she felt in that moment. Not lo
Anna walked slowly toward her office after finishing with her last patient. Fatigue was beginning to settle into her body, urging her to steal a few moments of rest before continuing her rounds. The hospital corridor, once bustling, had grown quieter—only the soft echo of her footsteps remained.Just as her hand touched the doorknob and she pushed it open, a hand suddenly grabbed her and pulled her inside. The door slammed shut, followed by the sharp click of the lock.Anna gasped, her breath catching in her throat. She nearly cried out—until her eyes landed on the man in front of her.“Liam!” she exclaimed, instinctively hitting his chest. She was now pinned between the wall and his arms, trapped in his hold. “What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice still laced with shock.“Your ex can come see you, but your husband can’t?” Liam replied coldly. His sharp gaze made his displeasure unmistakable.“He came to accompany Lusi,” Anna explained quickly, trying to defuse the tension.B
“Rendy, why do you look so restless? Don’t you like coming with me to my check-up?” Lusi asked, her tone edged with irritation, her brows drawn together as if searching for an answer he refused to give.Rendy let out a slow breath. The hand gripping his phone trembled slightly. “Why have you been so annoying lately?”The words slipped out before he could stop them, and the air between them instantly turned cold.“What do you mean by that?” Lusi replied, her voice soft but quivering now. Her eyes glistened, her lips trembling as she fought back tears.“I’ve been quiet this whole time, and you keep accusing me of things that aren’t true. But the moment I say something, suddenly you’re the one who’s hurt,” Rendy said, his voice low but firm.Lusi broke into tears. She lowered her head, her shoulders shaking. “I’m sorry… I know I’ve been annoying. But I don’t even know why I’m like this…”Rendy looked at her for a moment. There was exhaustion in his eyes, but he couldn’t fully bring himse
Anna looked around. Black dominated the room—so deep and overwhelming that it felt like a perfect reflection of Liam himself.“Why is it so quiet?” Anna murmured when she didn’t see anyone around.“There’s no one here,” Liam replied flatly.Anna simply nodded, accepting the answer without pressing
Anna stepped out of the car beside Liam. They were now officially husband and wife. Each step felt unbearably heavy, the reality still difficult for Anna to accept. The marriage had happened too fast—too suddenly, far removed from anything she had ever imagined for herself.“Anna,” Matilda called,
“Mom, I happened to run into a friend here. Why don’t you have dinner with Agnes instead? I’m sorry, I won’t be able to join you.”Anna sent the message after hiding in the restroom for nearly ten minutes. She deliberately lingered, hoping the tension outside would ease if she gave it enough time.
“Anna.”Matilda’s voice drifted into the room as she stepped inside Anna’s bedroom.“Yes, Mom? What is it?” Anna replied, pausing what she was doing.“Have you eaten yet?” Matilda asked. Guilt still lingered in her eyes, unmistakable despite her gentle tone.“I have, Mom. Don’t worry,” Anna said so
