Chapter 03: The Conversation I Never Wanted to Have

I don’t know what was more violent

Jason standing in my living room,

or Natalie… stepping forward to stand beside him.

She was there.

In front of me.

As if she had the right to be here.

As if she had something to explain.

As if she wasn’t the reason my heart was breaking more with every passing second.

I think the silence lasted a long time.

Or maybe it didn’t.

I don’t know anymore.

Time had no shape, no meaning. Everything in my head was blurred.

Jason looked at her in a way I had never seen before.

A look he had never given me.

One of those looks that says everything without saying a word.

And something inside me collapsed all over again.

Natalie took a breath.

Her eyes were shining—but not with shame.

I think she was afraid.

Or maybe she was acting.

I couldn’t even tell anymore.

“Claire…” she whispered. “I… I wanted to talk to you before. I wanted to explain.”

I laughed. Not a real laugh.

The kind that comes from somewhere broken.

The kind that sounds wrong.

The kind that says, I’m in too much pain to stay calm.

“Explain what?” I breathed. “That you’ve been sleeping with my husband for almost a year? Or that you signed a document that destroys my life behind my back?”

She clutched her purse like she could hide inside it.

“It’s not like that—”

“Natalie, stop,” I cut in, my voice unfamiliar even to me. “Stop. Just… stop.”

Jason rolled his eyes.

“I told you we could handle this calmly—”

I turned to him.

And I think that’s when something changed in me.

Something deep.

Something even he didn’t understand.

“Jason… you’re going to be quiet.”

He slightly opened his mouth, surprised, eyebrows furrowed.

But I didn’t let him speak.

“You and Natalie have already used all the words in the world to lie to me. Now it’s my turn to talk.”

I faced my friend.

My former friend.

The only person I confided in.

The one who knew when I cried in the shower.

The one who knew when I was hurting.

The one who pretended to defend me.

The one who used to say,

“I’ll always be there.”

I stared at her long enough for her to look down first.

“Why?” I asked.

She swallowed.

“Claire—”

“Why?” I repeated, louder.

She took a long breath, like she was bracing herself.

“I… I didn’t want it to happen like this. I swear. You and Jason… you were already—”

“Broken?” I finished for her.

She nodded.

“Yes. Your marriage… it hadn’t been working for a long time. Honestly, it never really worked, Claire.”

I stepped toward her.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

“And that’s why you replaced me?” I whispered.

She lifted her head sharply.

“No! I didn’t replace you! Claire, it’s not like—”

I raised my hand.

“Don’t lie anymore. Please. Not now. Not today. Not after what I just found out.”

She froze.

Jason too.

They looked like two guilty statues.

I continued.

“When you told me to leave… was it to make room for him?”

She closed her eyes.

Jason looked away.

“And when you said I would ‘find happiness again’… what did you mean? Watching you take my place in my own life?”

She wavered.

“Claire… I love you. You’re my sister. I wanted what was best for you.”

I stepped even closer.

One inch away.

“If you loved me… you never would have fallen in love with my husband.”

She opened her mouth—but no sound came out.

Her face turned red.

Then pale.

Jason exhaled impatiently.

“Claire, we’re not going to drag this out forever. It happened. We can’t change it. Now we need to be adults.”

I turned to him.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

As if my body was holding back an explosion.

“‘Adults’?” I repeated softly.

He shrugged.

“Yeah. You’re being dramatic. Like always.”

I didn’t scream.

I didn’t cry.

I didn’t shake.

No.

I just smiled.

A small smile.

A tired smile.

A torn smile.

“Jason… you know what’s funny?”

He frowned.

“You just set me free. And you don’t even realize it.”

He shrugged again, like it meant nothing to him.

But inside… I had just understood something.

I was in pain.

So much pain.

A kind of pain I had never felt before.

But beneath the pain…

beneath the tears…

there was something else.

Like a door opening.

A feeling I had never known in my life.

The beginning of strength.

Natalie looked at me, confused.

“Claire… I just want to talk. I want to explain how it happened. It wasn’t planned… Jason and I… we just… we just…”

“Enough,” I cut her off.

I tightened my grip on the divorce papers.

“I don’t want your explanations. I don’t want your justifications. And I don’t want you in my life anymore.”

She stepped back, as if my words had slapped her.

Jason sighed.

“Fine. Then it’s clear. We’re getting divorced. It’ll be easier for all three of us.”

I turned to him.

And I think in that moment, for the first time that day, my heart stopped bleeding.

“No, Jason. It’ll be easier for you and her. Not for me.”

I took a breath.

“But you know what? I’ll sign. I’ll sign because I’m done being the shadow of my own life. I’ll sign because I’m tired of crying over someone who never knew how to love me. I’ll sign because I’m done waiting for you, forgiving you, protecting you. I’ll sign because I’m worth more than this.”

Natalie covered her mouth.

Jason remained stone-faced.

He didn’t understand.

I placed the document on the table.

“But I’ll sign when I’m ready. Not when you want me to. Not when she wants me to.”

Natalie was crying now.

Real tears.

Or maybe calculated ones.

With her, I no longer knew the difference.

“Claire… please…”

I gestured for her to stop.

“Get out of my house.”

She blinked, stunned.

“Claire—”

“Out. Now.”

She turned to Jason as if searching for support.

But Jason didn’t move.

Or maybe he just didn’t care.

He had always been good at leaving at the worst moment.

Finally, Natalie whispered,

“I’m sorry…”

I shook my head.

“No. You’re not.”

She lowered her eyes.

Then she left.

The door closed.

And when it slammed, it felt like something slammed shut inside me too.

Jason stood there in the middle of the living room.

“Fine. I’ll go too,” he said neutrally. “We’ll talk about this tomorrow.”

I didn’t answer.

He left as well.

When the house became silent again, my legs gave out.

I collapsed onto the couch.

I didn’t cry.

Not this time.

I just stayed there… breathing like someone who had survived a crash.

Then I felt something.

A strange feeling.

Something I had never truly felt before.

Not strength yet.

But… the beginning of it.

A very small beginning.

I looked up at the ceiling.

And at that exact moment, my phone vibrated.

I picked it up.

My hands were still shaking.

An unknown number.

A short message.

Just a few words.

“I’m outside your house. I have something important to tell you. — Ayman”

I froze.

Ayman.

Jason’s childhood friend.

The only one in the group who had always looked at me with kindness.

The only one who spoke to me like I truly existed.

The only one who asked questions when he saw I wasn’t okay.

The only one…

who had disappeared from our lives a few months ago without any explanation.

Why now?

Why him?

Why this message?

And what did he want to tell me…

at this exact moment?

  • Too Late to Love me Now   EPILOGUE

Claire and Ayman finally said “yes.”A simple “yes,” pure, quiet, without pressure, without fear.A “yes” that closed every old wound and opened a bright path ahead of them. The family welcomed them with sincere joy.Everything was going well for Ayman and his loved ones, and Claire officially finished her studies. On the day she left for her first diplomatic mission, her whole family walked her to the airport. Their heads were held high, their hearts full of pride. In their eyes, you could see that rare mix of honor, joy, and gratitude toward life. While Claire flew toward a future that finally looked like her, someone else was living the exact opposite.Jason, alone in a big empty house, felt consumed by bitterness and regret. The walls felt too tight. He had no one left to break the silence—except his own frustration. The doorbell rang.A glass in hand, he walked toward the door.“Well, finally,” he said to a young woman dressed provocatively, almost vulgarly.“Go to my room. That

“Sweetheart, are you okay?” he asked.“I’m fine. We’re together and that’s all that matters, nothing else,” I answered, my heart calm. Not even Natalie.Better late than never.Masks fall faster than we think.I came out of that whole story rebuilt, with my self-worth restored, new revelations, a promising future, and above all a life partner who loves me — and whom I love with all my heart. My dad, who once only had eyes for Jason and saw him as the perfect partner, finally realized he was way too good for him — and for me.Life went back to normal.Ayman’s company was thriving, and as promised, my dad helped him and his partner.Financially, and with infrastructure. The workspace was expanded and now he was opening a second office in another city.“I want to thank everyone who worked hard this year, a year that is ending with great news. Dear team, the future is uncertain, but one thing is clear: our commitment and our steel-strong will can take us very far.”“On behalf of the whole

I was happy againDid love save me? No, I wouldn’t say it like thatAyman’s love taught me to love myself first in everythingLove doesn’t just bring two people togetherIt brings together two people who know how to loveAnd to know how to love, you must first become the reflection of the love you want to giveBecause loving yourself is the first sign of a blooming soulAre you living a life that crushes your self-worth?Are you with someone who drags you down and makes you doubt your own value?Do your friendships dim your light instead of lifting you up?Then take a step back and ask yourself the right questionsYou’re losing yourselfAnd I lost myself tooI let myself get trapped in a marriage that didn’t make me happyAnd I hesitated for so long to choose myself, even when the worst things were happening right in front of my eyesBut I stayed because I wasn’t listening to myselfBecause I put everyone’s feelings before mineBecause I abandoned myselfNo MoreThrough our meeting, I

Love triumphed. The real kind the one that doesn’t hurt, the one that forgives, the one that heals, and the one that makes you grow.Ayman and I could finally live our love.Every walk, every message, every meeting now had meaning.I wasn’t holding anything back anymore; I was living it. Every moment with him brought out the amazing Claire I was and he made her shine even brighter.“I love you,” I said.“And I love you even more,” he replied. We enjoyed the calm of the park, the warmth around us, and all the love life had to offer.“We’re so happy here, just the two of us, and I feel like I could stay like this forever. But right now, there’s just one more thing to make it perfect,” he said, looking at me intently.“What’s that, Ayman?”“It’s time for our families to meet. It’s time we visit my mom.”“I’m so happy, and I know deep down she’s been waiting for this moment too.”“Do you think Lili and Nicolas went far?”“I think… far enough that we’ve got plenty of time to love each othe

  • Too Late to Love me Now   Chapter 37: When the Truth Comes Out

“Why are you saying that? Aren’t you tired of playing with other people’s feelings? Ayman is in love with someone it’s true and your eyes know exactly who. If your goal is to hurt me even more than you already have, know this: I’ve moved on. Now go. Leave me alone, once and for all.”“Claire, listen to me once and for all! I won’t repeat myself!” she snapped, then continued immediately.“Ayman loves you with all his heart. Even if it pisses me off because I love him, and I realized way too late that I could never live up to his love. He’s the only man who truly loved me the way I deserved. He’s head over heels for you, and that kiss we shared—it wasn’t even meant by him. I caught him off guard.”It was like a slap to my face.I stood frozen in front of her. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. That image came crashing back into my mind. Everything felt so real. In my head, everything was tangled. I didn’t know what to believe, what to say, what to think. I was just there—disarmed, s

  • Too Late to Love me Now   Chapter 36: Rebuilding

I didn’t want any of that anymore. I didn’t want to suffer. To be the one who hurts, the one who forgives the unforgivable, the one who looks the other way while others act unjustly. I wanted to reconnect with myself, forget all those stories, forget the last words, forget that fake friendship, forget that budding love, and relearn how to care for myself. To love myself not through someone else’s eyes, but truly for who I am. It was no longer about opening my heart; it was about restoring it. So I decided to start over. Start over learning to love myself. Start over learning to rest. Start over learning to appreciate all of me. Start over working on the chains that made me dependent on others’ love and approval. This was something I should have done long ago. No more wasted tears. Hours later, late at night, Lili knocked at my door again. I opened it and held her close. My pain was hers, and knowing she was sad because of me made me even sadder. “Claire, are you feeling bet

“Ayman…” I whispered. I felt shaken… and strangely safe at the same time. What I was feeling in that moment was something I couldn’t quite name.He stepped closer, and in his eyes I could see he hadn’t expected to find me like this.Neither had I. “Ja… Jason… What are you saying? But… but where am I supposed to go?”I was stunned.Another humiliation. On top of being betrayed and humiliated, I now had nothingnot even a roof over my head.I wanted to scream at the injustice, to shout that I had been nothing more than a rag doll in that house.
