Chapter 4

Author: Blackmist Sea
Before Ruby could stop him, Lars had already opened the wooden box.

It was their original marriage certificate.

"Marriage certificate? Was this what you risked your life for?

"Did you know that you broke your leg and would have died from inhaling too much smoke?!"

Ruby silently reclaimed the box. It contained everything she needed for the divorce proceedings.

How was she to get a divorce if she did not have the original marriage certificate?

When Lars watched the way she clutched onto it, a ball of anger rose inside him.

She was always fixated on the past, lashing out impulsively whenever she lost control of her emotions!

With that in mind, Lars cried out, "All three of us would've gotten out of there just fine, but you just had to do something that put me in a position where I had to choose one of you. Just how far will you go to prove how important you are?

"Of course I had to save Vera since you were the one who started the fire!"

Ruby just lay silently on the bed, uttering a flat noncommittal response.

"Ruby," Lars continued explaining, this time in a gentler tone, "I already told you I'm going to focus on us and that I won't have anything to do with Vera anymore. She... Hasn't been doing well, so I decided to help her out by offering her a place to stay."

She had not been doing well, that was why he slept with her.

All that talk about focusing on his family, only to be drawn back to Vera's youthful body.

Finally, Ruby turned to face Lars.

There was a still look in her eyes that was devoid of any emotion.

"I know, and I understand."

Lars had had enough of her eerie calmness by this point. He shot up from his seat only to notice the scar on her arm, which was left behind from her suicide attempt.

He felt his throat turn dry. Yet, he also felt hurt by Ruby's behavior.

"Ruby, how many more scars are you going to collect? How far will you go just to keep me?"

Ruby replied faintly, "I won't do anything so stupid anymore."

Lars wanted to retort upon hearing the lukewarm tone of her voice when his phone suddenly rang.

He retreated to the window to pick up the call.

Ruby could not hear the details of the conversation, but she picked up on Vera's sobbing.

After Lars whispered a few words of consolation into the phone, he turned back to Ruby.

"Something urgent came up at work. I'm going to be busy for the next few days. Take care and recover from your injury. I'll be with you on your birthday."

Ruby burst out laughing.

"I share the same birthday with Vera. Are you sure you don't need to celebrate with her instead?"

Lars' face flushed instantly. His voice raised as he snapped, "What does her birthday have to do with me? I told you I'm only helping her for now!"

By the time he turned toward Ruby, she had already turned her back to him.

He was about to defend himself again when his phone continued vibrating with incoming messages. After grumbling something about telling Vera to take care of herself, he left.

Ruby spent the next few days in relative quiet, recovering from her wound in the hospital.

Meanwhile, Lars, who was still feeling guilty, continued to send her flowers and her favorite pastries. He also took the time to text her to check on her condition.

All Ruby did was offer curt replies to cut their conversation short.

On the day of her discharge, she hobbled to the lobby with her crutches all by herself to settle the bill.

Just as Ruby was handing over her documents, an elderly woman cut her off in line.

"Ma'am, you can't cut the line."

The offended elderly woman shoved Ruby aside upon hearing this, then rebuked her, "My son-in-law is the hospital's main investor! So what if I cut the line? You better not mess with me, or you'll regret it!"

As if she was annoyed by Ruby's pace of hobbling down the line on crutches, she shoved her another time.

Ruby frowned.

Lars was the hospital's main investor.

She turned around just in time to see Lars and Vera rushing over in her direction after hearing the commotion.

The first thing Lars did was to pull Ruby aside as if he was afraid of that Ruby might say something to the older woman.

"This is Danya. She's Vera's mother. She has a short temper because she's sick. It wouldn't kill you to let her skip the line."

Meanwhile, Vera went up to Ruby with tears in her eyes to apologize, "This was all my fault! When my mother caught a cold, I didn't want her to worry about the medical expenses, so I told her I had a boyfriend who would take care of things. Ruby, if you're going to blame someone, please blame me instead of Mr. Turner. He was only trying to help me."

Ruby cast an indifferent look over both of them.

Was that why Lars decided to leave her to fend for herself in the hospital despite her fractured leg and burns? All because Vera's mother caught a cold?

Forget it, it no longer mattered.

All she did was nod without providing a response, then she turned and left.

She had just taken a step when she heard Vera speaking to Lars in a trembling voice.

"Is Ruby angry with you again? Is she going to freak out and torment you again? It's all my fault. I was just so stressed out about my mother."

Lars gently wiped her tears away.

"It's alright, she wouldn't understand how you feel since she never had parents growing up."

Tears streamed down her face.Lars wiped away her tears. His hands were shaking as well."Don't be scared, I'm here. I won't leave you alone."There were only two minutes left until detonation. Lars hardly knew how to disarm a bomb and resorted to hoping for the best and removing the metal clasp on top.Removing the cover revealed two wires inside—one red, one blue. It seemed like one of them needed to be cut.All the color had drained out of Ruby's face by then. She was fading out of consciousness from blood loss.

Ruby felt a splitting headache when she opened her bleary eyes, only to find herself lying in an abandoned warehouse. There were several burly men. In the midst of them was Vera, who was standing with her back facing Ruby's direction and was talking to one of the men."Marcus, I told you I was going to bring you the daughter of the Bretners. Here she is."The man who was addressed as Marcus seemed to be blind in one eye, evident by the eyepatch he wore.He smiled approvingly. "Not bad, so you're not useless after all. I knew breaking you out of the asylum was worth the trouble."He adjusted his eye patch before stating hatefully, "It was Karl who blinded me many years ago. I had to go back to Rheinberg for several years while I recovered. Now that I have his dear sister here, I'll make sure she's well-treated..."Vera's eyes gleamed with excitement. "You should just finish her off right now. Make it quick and end this once and for all!"Marcus snappily interrupted Vera. "I need

Karl held a reception to welcome Ruby home, inviting prominent figures from across Arona to celebrate her return. The moment Ruby stepped under the spotlight dressed in a haute couture gown styled to match the heirloom her mother had given to her, everyone erupted in applause.Karl gently took her hand to lead her to the front of the stage."My beloved sister, the pearl of the Bretners, has finally returned."Up on the stage, Ruby felt her heart drop when she glanced at a discreet corner and noticed Lars. He was like a ghost that refused to stop haunting her.Karl noticed as well and was just about to order his bodyguards to remove Lars when Ruby stopped him."Let me handle this myself. I need to put an end to this, otherwise, this will go on forever."With that, she lifted her dress and stepped off the stage to approach Lars.As she got closer, she noticed the scars on Lars' face. His eyes that once gleamed vibrantly with life now seemed hollow.Ruby did not hold back. "Lars,

Meanwhile, Ruby was completely oblivious to what happened that night. She had a good night's sleep. When she went downstairs, she found Karl at the dining table savoring a cup of coffee while going through some reports."What are you doing here?"Karl cast a faint look at her, then gestured for her to sit down and eat while remarking, "I decided to stay on the ground floor since you were worried. This area happened to be near my office anyway."With that, Ruby sat across from him and started nibbling at a piece of bread. She had a hard time figuring out Karl. She was aware this place was some distance away from Bretner Corporation and that he would have to take a detour to get to work."If you want to go shopping, bring the bodyguards with you just to be on the safe side."After that, they ate the rest of their meal in silence.Since Ruby wanted to head out for a walk and get some fresh air, she decided to leave with Karl after breakfast.Just as she was about to get into the

When Lars went to Ruby's house to deliver gifts again, he was told that the owner had moved out.His eyes darkened immediately upon hearing this. He reached for his phone to call Jerome, "Find out where Ruby is! There's no way she could've disappeared in a day!"He had been overwhelmed the past few days because Ruby had been ignoring him. He was far more irritable than usual. When Lars sat on the couch, he pinched his brow endlessly while recalling what Ruby told him the other day.He must not have admitted his mistakes sincerely enough. That was why Ruby would not forgive him.She must still be upset with Vera. Then, he tapped on a recorded footage of Vera being tortured in an asylum. In the video, Vera was surrounded by several men clad in hospital gowns and repeatedly attacking Vera with stun guns.Vera looked like a shadow of her former self. There was a long scar had been carved across her face and she looked to be dazed and disoriented. When Lars watched the video, he smi

Ruby kept her eyes fixed on the ground. Her voice was calm as she said, "When you cheated on me, it didn't seem like you cared to ask if it was fair. Don't you ever show your face in front of me again."When Lars watched her figure shrinking into the distance, he clenched his fists so tightly that his hands hurt. After that day, Ruby started to receive flowers and a variety of gifts at her doorstep every day. The gifts were an assortment of jewelry and, on occasion, a designer bag. However, they were all in styles she used to like. She habitually tossed the gifts straight into the trash. She did not know how Lars managed to find her address. She decided she could not live here any longer. With that, she hesitated for a moment before dialing a number."Hey, I remember you told me I could contact you if I ever needed help. I need help moving to a more secluded place."Karl Bretner was reviewing documents when he answered. His deep voice echoed, "Ruby?"After falling silent for a
