Chapter 40

Two days passed swiftly.

The movers had arrived early that morning. Furniture was being packed and arranged into two black vans parked at the side of the mansion. Everything happened so quickly. Roderick handled most of the arrangements. I watched from the hallway, my mind still stuck in last night's silence.

Sisi, Roderick, and I were moving out together—just like he said.

Jessica and Aria had tried to act unaffected by the announcement, but I saw the way they stared when Roderick handed the moving schedule to Grandpa like it was a declaration of freedom.

I should’ve been relieved—happy even—but instead, my chest felt heavy.

The new house was a modern home tucked quietly outside the city. It was far enough from the main mansion to feel free, yet close enough that Grandpa could visit often. A beautiful white building with soft blue roofing, glass windows that reflected the sky, and a front porch that felt... peaceful.

I stood in front of the house, still staring.

Chapter 43 I didn’t expect to sleep so peacefully after everything, but somehow, the weight on my chest had eased a little after visiting Grandpa. His words stayed with me, echoing like a guiding light in a dark tunnel: "Sometimes, love isn’t about having. It’s about giving the one you care for the space to choose freely. If it’s real, it’ll find its way back to you." That morning, I walked into the kitchen and found Sisi already prepping breakfast. She turned slightly, her eyes meeting mine, warm and understanding. "Did you sleep okay?" she asked, passing me a cup of tea. I nodded. "Better than I thought I would." She reached for a plate. "You left pretty fast yesterday. Roderick didn’t ask questions. He just said you looked like you needed some space." I swallowed, a pang pressing against my chest. "That’s kind of him." Sisi paused, then turned fully to face me. "You still love Roderick, don’t you?" I blinked. There it was. No sugarcoating, no dancing around it. "Yes," I wh

Chapter42 The evening air clung to my skin as I stepped outside, my heart heavier than I wanted to admit. I had excused myself from Adrian and lingered behind to text Mirabel: "We’re here. At the spot to your left." The reply came quickly: "Good. I’ll be there soon. Just stall him. And try to be normal." Normal. If only she knew how impossible that felt. Adrian and I sat beneath the gazebo. The silence between us wasn’t tense—it was thoughtful. Every now and then he’d glance at me, like he wanted to ask something but didn’t know how. Maybe he felt the way I did: like everything we knew was shifting under our feet. “Did you ever think about leaving all this behind?” he asked suddenly. I blinked. “What do you mean?” He leaned back against the bench. “Just disappearing. Living a quiet life. No secrets. No family drama. Just peace.” My lips curved sadly. “Every day.” His eyes met mine, and I saw something there—a longing I couldn’t explain, or maybe didn’t want to. That’s when I s

Chapter 41: Camila's POV The air was heavy with anticipation as the car rolled up the driveway. I stood by the window, my fingers gripping the edge of the curtain, heart racing. Ryan was here. The moment the car door opened and the boy stepped out, I recognized him immediately. His gait, his curious eyes, the slight squint he made when he looked toward the house—it was Roderick all over again. And when Roderick stepped forward to greet him, a strange silence filled the space between father and son. Ryan looked at him, unsure. Roderick knelt to Ryan’s height, his voice gentle. “Hey, Ryan. I’m... I’m Roderick.” Ryan tilted his head. “You’re the man from the picture,” he said quietly. Roderick smiled, his eyes glistening. “Yes. That’s me.” Ryan glanced back at sisi, and she gave him a reassuring nod. “He’s a friend, Ryan,” she said. “Remember the man we talked about?” Ryan walked into Roderick’s waiting arms. It wasn’t the full embrace of a child who’d known his father forever,

Chapter 39I took my bath, got dressed, and headed downstairs to meet everyone. They were all already there—Mr. and Mrs. Clastu, Grandpa, Aria, Jessica, Adrian… and Roderick.I walked down the stairs slowly, keeping my face neutral, then sat beside Sisi. She was to my left while Roderick sat just a seat away from me.“Good morning, sleepyhead. I actually woke up earlier than you today,” Sisi whispered with a teasing smile.I rolled my eyes, chuckling.“You’re never going to let that go, are you?”“Nope,” she grinned proudly. We both laughed quietly and started eating while the rest of the table was filled with soft chatter. Everyone seemed wrapped up in their conversations—with their partner or their own thoughts.Suddenly, a whisper tickled my ear.“Good morning, Camila.”It was Aria. Her voice alone irritated me. She smiled at me, clearly pleased to be sitting close to Roderick—who, as usual, barely acknowledged her existence.Enough was enough.I stood up and said coolly, “Please g

We can talk about it tomorrow."I said quietly, my voice barely holding up as I opened the door to my room. But he didn’t leave.“So you were the one who set it all up,” he said softly from behind me, his voice filled with pain.I froze. I knew this conversation couldn’t be postponed. No matter how exhausted I was, I had to face him—and take responsibility.“I’m sorry, Roderick. I… I—”I stuttered, searching for the right words, but my brain gave up on me completely. The pounding in my head worsened, the pressure too much.“I really don’t know what to say to you, Camila.”He sighed, deeply. He walked slowly toward the bed and sat down without saying another word. I understood without needing an invitation. I walked over and sat beside him, keeping my eyes fixed on my lap. I couldn’t bear to look at him.“So now what? What do we do from here?” he asked, voice gentle, but heavy with something unspoken.I swallowed ha
