CHAPTER 1: My Sight

Nora POV

I turned uneasily on my bed, sweating profusely. My body was drenched in sweat and it didn't seem like it was going to get better.

"Where the hell is Josephine?" I murmured to myself, anticipating the arrival of the nurse assigned to me. Or even Landon. I needed a miracle person to step in and adjust the room temperature.

I can't take this anymore. I frowned in frustration, deciding to do it myself.

I groped the bedspread tightly, still hoping for someone to walk in. But after a moment I decided to do it myself, secretly praying that I would not be caught.

My eyeballs moved gently under my eyelids and I slowly opened my eyes. The direct beam of sunlight on me made me shut my eyes back.

No wonder it was so hot.

The bed had been moved to face the only window where light radiated in and unfortunately for me, it was doing exactly that.

I sighed in frustration. I needed to open my eyes despite how unsafe it was for me. I was just starting to recover and was not going to take the risk for it.

I opened my eyes again, this time I tried my best to move my head to the side to reduce the light constraints. A smile of satisfaction appeared on my lips when the room lay in pure sight. It was blurry but I couldn't have been more satisfied.

Two days earlier, I had been able to see but only things that had color in them. All other things were as blank as when I was completely blind.

My secret was light—I needed light to see but when there was none, the room stood still, my blindness taking over.

The accident may have cost me some years of my life but if it hadn't happened, I would never have met the love of my life and I was willing to risk my life for him again.

I swung my feet gently to the ground and stood, holding onto the table beside the bed to maintain my balance. My feet hurt as I dragged myself towards the hall, leaning against it slightly to catch my breath.

I made my way to the control panel of the air conditioner slowly, using my hands to trace the wall for support. As I moved, my overalls got entangled in a nail by the wall causing me to lose my balance and stumble backwards, hitting the drawer with my waist in the process.

"Ouch!" I cried out in pain, massaging my waist as I staggered to the curtain for support.

I slid the curtain open and to my surprise, I saw Landon standing behind it.

Why is he here? To see me? My heart skipped a beat as I saw his perfect body in my view, a blush creeping into my face.

I decided it was the perfect time to tell him about how I had recovered my sight, so I held out my hand to touch him when a voice spoke causing my hand to freeze in the air.

"Is that Nora?"

The nurse's voice resounded clearly in my ears. At once, I switched into my blind mode.

"Nurse Josephine?" My voice panicked, my hands wandering all over the curtain. "Is that you? I…I have been expecting you," I whimpered, my voice barely a whisper.

Josephine pushed herself away from Landon who was planting kisses on her face. She lunged forward and rested on the wall, her arms crossed around her chest.

"I didn't know you knew your way around or why are you not in bed?" The nurse eyed me suspiciously, her gaze moving to Landon in annoyance.

She had told him that she was not in the mood to sleep with him today.

"No, nurse Josephine, the room felt a little hotter than usual, so, ehm, I tried locating the control panel of the air conditioner," I explained, my eyes everywhere except them.

"Do you mind doing that for me, Josephine?" I brought my palms together in plea, almost sobbing in the process.

Josephine sighed and exchanged glances with Landon. "What do you think?" She mouthed to him.

"Okay," Josephine walked out of the curtains, her steps quiet as she moved towards the control.

"Have you heard from Landon today? He promised to be here today."

I moved my attention to Josephine who had now adjusted the room temperature.

That dress. I squinted my eyes in recognition but quickly got myself back before I got caught.

That was my dress. I would never forget it. The colorful sequin gown was a gift from Landon and I had never even worn it.

My mind was still all over the place when Josephine turned to me. "Fine now?" The coldness in her voice could not be hidden.

"Yes, Josephine. Thank you so much." I managed to force a bright smile on my face despite the soreness in my throat.

"Get back to bed," Josephine ordered, making her way back to Landon. But I saw it—the flirty eyes she threw at him, her cleavages that lay open, and then the necklace.

What the… I almost cursed out. It was fine that she was wearing my dress or maybe even sleeping with my fiancé but to wear my mother's necklace?

My veins popped in my neck and I tightened my fist. I watched as Josephine lunged her arms around his neck and kissed him deeply.

My heart turned to ice and I stared at them openly making out in the room. The excitement of regaining my sight was instantly replaced by a crushing chill.

If my vision had never returned, would I have been blind to their deception forever?

I took a breath to calm my emotions and turned to go back to the bed when I stumbled and knocked over a small cabinet, sending a saline bottle crashing onto the floor, and drenching the two in cold liquid.

Josephine screamed in shock and a smirk appeared on my lips.

"What are you doing?" Josephine screamed.

"Where is Landon?" I snapped, my tone evidently harsh. I refused to apologize, losing every bit of respect I had for them. I still pretended not to see Landon.

Silence erupted in the room for a brief moment and the two exchanged glances in suspicion.

I heard someone cough just when I thought he was going to continue pretending.

"Landon! Are you fine?"

Landon took a look at Josephine with surprise. "How did she know?" He whispered to her and she shrugged.

"Please get me medicine from the cabinet," he spoke finally, testing to see if I had regained my sight.
