Nora turned uneasy on her bed, sweating profusely. Her body was drenched in sweat and it didn’t seem like it was going to get better.
“Where the hell is Josephine?” She murmured to herself, anticipating the arrival of the nurse assigned to her. Or even Landon. She needed a miracle person to step in and adjust the room temperature.
‘I can't take this anymore.’ She frowned in frustration, deciding to do that herself.
She groped the bedspread tightly, still hoping for someone to walk in. But after a moment she decided to do it herself, secretly praying that she would not be caught.
Her eyeballs moved gently under her eyelid and she slowly opened her eyes. The direct beam of sunlight on her made her shut her eyes back.
‘No wonder it was so hot.’
The bed had been moved to face the only window where light radiated in and unfortunately for Nora, it was doing exactly that.
Nora sighed in frustration, she needed to open her eyes despite how unsafe it was for her. She was just starting to recover and was not going to take the risk for it.
She opened her eyes again, this time she tried her best to move her head to the side to reduce the light constraints.
A smile of satisfaction appeared on her lips when the room lay in pure sight, it was blurry but she couldn’t have been more satisfied.
Two days earlier, she had been able to see but only things that had color in them. All other things were as blank as when she was completely blind.
Her secret was light- she needed light to see but when there was none, the room stood still, her blindness taking over.
The accident may have cost her some years of her life but if it hadn't happened, she would never have met the love of her life and she was willing to risk her life for him again.
Nora swung her feet gently on the ground and stood, holding onto the table beside the bed to maintain her balance. Her feet hurt as she dragged herself towards the hall, leaning against it slightly to catch her breath.
She made her way to the control panel of the air conditioner slowly, using her hands to trace the wall for support.
As she moved, her overalls got entangled in a nail by the wall causing her to lose her balance and stumble backwards, hitting the drawer by her waist in the process.
“Ouch!” She cried out in pain, massaging her waist as she staggered to the curtain for support.
She slid the curtain open and to her surprise, she saw Landon standing behind it.
‘Why is he here? To see me?” Her heart skipped a beat as she saw his perfect body in her view, a blush creeping into her face.
She decided it was the perfect time to tell him about how she had recovered her sight, so she held out her hand to touch him when a voice spoke causing her hand to freeze in the air.
“Is that Nora?”
The nurse's voice resounded clearly into her ears. At once, she switched into her blind mode.
“Nurse Josephine?” Her voice panicked, her hands wandering all over the curtain. “Is that you? I…I have been expecting you,” she whimpered, her voice barely a whisper.
Josephine pushed herself away from Landon who was planting kisses on her face. She lodged forward and rested on the wall, her arms crossed around her chest.
“I didn’t know you knew your way around or why are you not in bed?” The nurse eyed Nora suspiciously, her gaze moving to Landon in annoyance.
She had told him that she was not in the mood to sleep with him today.
“No, nurse Josephine, the room felt a little hotter than usual, so, ehm, I tried locating the control panel of the air conditioner,” Nora explained, her eyes everywhere except them.
“Do you mind doing that for me, Josephine?” She brought her palms together in plea, almost sobbing in the process.
Josephine sighed and exchanged glances with Landon. “What do you think?” She mouthed to him.
“Okay,” Josephine walked out of the curtains, her steps quiet as she moved towards the control.
“Have you heard from Landon today? He promised to be here today.”
Nora moved her attention to Josephine who had now adjusted the room temperature.
‘That dress’ Nora squinted her eyes in recognition but quickly got herself back before she got caught.
That was her dress, she would never forget it. The colorful sequin gown was a gift from Landon and she had never even worn it.
Her mind was still over the place when Josephine turned to her, “Fine now?” The coldness in her voice could not be hidden.
“Yes, Josephine. Thank you so much.” Nora managed to force a bright smile on her face despite the soreness in her throat.
“Get back to bed,” Josephine ordered, making her way back to Landon. But Nora saw it- the flirty eyes she threw at him, her cleavages that lay open, and then the necklace.
‘What the…” She almost cursed out. It was fine that she was wearing her dress or maybe even sleeping with her fiancée but to wear her mother’s necklace?
Her veins popped in her neck and she tightened her fist. She watched as Josephine lunged her arms around his neck and kissed him deeply.
Nora’s heart turned to ice and she stared at them openly making out in the room. The excitement of regaining her sight was instantly replaced by a crushing chill.
If her vision had never returned, would she have been blind to their deception forever?
She took a breath to calm her emotions and turned to go back to the bed when stumbled and knocked over a small cabinet, sending a saline bottle crashing onto the floor, and drenching the two in cold liquid.
Josephine screamed in shock and a smirk appeared on Nora’s lips.
“What are you doing?” Josephine screamed.
“Where is Landon?” She snapped, her tone evidently harsh. She refused to apologize, losing every bit of respect she had for them. She still pretended not to see Landon.
Silence erupted in the room for a brief moment and the two exchanged glances in suspicion.
She heard someone cough just when she thought he was going to continue pretending.
“Landon! Are you fine?”
Landon took a look at Josephine with surprise. “How did she know?” He whispered to her and she shrugged.
“Please get me medicine from the cabinet,” he spoke finally, testing to see if she had regained her sight.
“I can't leave…” A muffled sound boomed in the quiet room.Nora turned immediately at the sound of the voice, shock, and excitement bursting within her. Never in a lifetime had she thought that she would hear her mother’s voice clear and sharp again. But all she saw was an old fragile and frail woman back in her confused, delusional state. She turned back bitter and dejected, the only string of hope she had was lost. How could she have imagined that her mother would be lucid again? She was now at the mercy of a stranger. Who she believed had a hand in the underworld- she was a hundred percent sure. That did not amaze her, after all, she just discovered the hidden identity and operations of Darius, Landon's father.Tyler’s men dragged her out of the room, doing the same with her mother. “Please be careful with her. She is very weak.” She pleaded as they walked out.“And wear her coat.” She screamed again.Landon collapsed on the bed when it was just him. He was glad to have gotten rid
Tyler leaned back in his chair, his expression blank and unreadable as he listened to Landon speak with rapt attention. He let him believe he was convinced, watching the excitement in his voice and the sparkle in his eyes as he continued to explain why Nora was a better hostage to her even stating Nora’s benefits to him as a woman. His voice brimmed with confidence, his pitch exaggerated with excitement of his brilliance.“You don’t understand, Tyler,” Landon insisted, almost rising to his feet. “She won’t resist. She has no choice! I have leverage over her; her mother is in my hands.” He leaned forward, his lips curling into a satisfied smirk. “She’ll do anything to keep her mother safe.”“Not only that, she is also good in bed.” He winked at Tyler. Tyler threw his face away, remembering their fleeting moment of romance. However, Nora felt her world collapse upside down. The breath in her throat ceased for a moment and she almost choked, her body locked in place as the weight of his
Nora stood rooted in the ground, at a loss of what to say. She fixed her eyes on the ground, unable to look at him and to prevent him from discovering her trembling sight.Tyler frowned when she didn’t say a word, he pushed her back into the room and came into contact with her mother. He eyed them before asking, “What are you doing here?”“Ehm…” she struggled to find the right excuse to give. “I'm a nurse here… I mistakenly entered the wrong room.”“Oh! And the woman?” “She is my patient.” She lied and fortunately, her mum didn't say a word.“Take her to the toilet.” He commanded and Nora had no choice but to do that.Tyler switched on the bedside lamp, and the moment he saw her face, he was momentarily stunned, falling into silence.Just as Nora was getting more nervous, he suddenly smirked. "Well, that works out. I need someone to check my wound."With that, he casually pulled open his shirt, revealing his broad shoulder. The wound wasn't deep, but under the dim light, the blood sm
Nora took a moment to calm herself down despite the surge of adrenaline rushing through her. She was disgusted at the mere sight of looking at them alone but a small smirk formed at the corner of her lips.“Okay but do you mean the one beside my bed, Josephine?” “Hmm, the one by the right stand.” Nora paused, that meant she needed to make a turn to the right. A thought appeared to her and she dropped to her knees, crawling her way through the bed stand. From a reflection, she saw that the two had gone back to their irritable affection. She reached the bed stand and held the wood for support before turning, holding it still. She opened the large cabinet and seeing that they were still engaged, intentionally she let the contents fall to the ground causing them to panic.“What are you doing Nora?” The nurse screamed out.“I'm so sorry, I didn’t mean to.” She fell to her knees, picking up the bottles on the floor.“Just bring the medicine,” Landon spoke out, not wanting the plan to fail
