Sadie's POV

The flowers slipped from my hands, white petals scattering across the ground.

My whole body shook. All I could hear was a deafening ringing in my ears.

It was all a fake set and a hired actress. Three years of penance and remorse, and every bit of it had been a lie.

I'd been so close to letting it go. Just minutes ago, I even softened toward the woman I thought was Wendy Blair, sitting behind the glass, and said, "I'm pregnant, so this is a fresh start. I won't be coming back anymore. Stay here and serve your time."

I stood frozen in place, trembling silently, barely daring to breathe. The guard who'd slipped away earlier came hurrying back, wiping sweat from his temple.

"There was an incident with one of the inmates. I had to step in."

I listened to his flimsy excuse and almost laughed. The visitation hall had its own dedicated staff. They didn't need him for anything. But I'd spent three years in such a fog that I'd never once noticed the cracks in the act.

After signing out, I walked slowly out of the prison and parked my car nearby, out of sight. Before long, a group of people came out laughing. The Wendy look-alike was among them, still in her prison uniform, flipping through a stack of cash and counting it.

My heart sank like a stone.

I pulled up my private investigator's number and called. "I need you to look into Wendy Blair. Get me everything about where she is right now."

He went quiet for a moment. "Didn't you tell me three years ago that she was locked up? You called off the whole thing and said to stop watching her and your husband. So why…"

He trailed off, but he understood. It didn't take long for him to send everything over.

Wendy had a private social media account documenting every moment of her life with Brock over the past three years. There she was starting fresh at a new hospital, with Brock right there to celebrate. Then she moved into a new place, with Brock taking her on trips.

And at the very end, Wendy had the baby, and Brock threw a lavish first birthday party for the child.

I stared at the photo of her holding the baby, Brock's arm around them both, and the pain hit so hard I could barely breathe. But I kept scrolling, punishing myself, until the comments stopped me cold.

My best friend, the one who'd spent three straight days cursing Wendy's name alongside me, had wished her congratulations. "My godson is finally turning one! Godma's sending a gift for sure!"

My brother, the one who'd helped me plaster the hospital with flyers exposing Wendy's affair, was beside himself. "Congrats, Brock! Sounds like there's going to be another little doctor in the family."

My parents, who'd pulled me back from the edge every time I'd nearly gone over it, commented too. "You and Wendy are a perfect match. Wishing your family nothing but happiness."

Coworkers and friends who'd once urged me to move on had all liked the post, leaving well-wishes of their own. Every single person in my life knew the truth. And every single one of them chose to keep it from me.

I sat there reading the comments for a long time, so long that when Brock's call finally came through, it took me a second to register it.

"Why aren't you home yet? Did something happen during the visit?"

His voice was warm and caring as always, but there was a faint undercurrent of tension that I might not have caught before.

I kept my voice even. "No. Everything went fine. But Brock, I'm not going back anymore."

The relief in his voice was instant, almost giddy. "I'm glad you've finally come around. She got what she deserved, and it's time for you to move on."

I pressed my lips together, a bitter taste in my mouth.

Right. I got what I deserved. And it was time to move on.

Sadie's POVBrock rented a place nearby.Every morning at 5:30 am, before the sun was fully up, he got out of bed and made breakfast the way he used to when I was pregnant. He'd make oatmeal with sliced fruit, everything cooked soft and cooled to just the right temperature. He was just as attentive as he'd been during those nine months, down to the smallest detail. He brought the bowl over and placed it carefully in my hands, his voice low and gentle, almost pleading. "Eat first. Don't skip breakfast."He reached out to brush the hair from my face, the gesture so practiced it was almost muscle memory. I stepped aside and put distance between us.Brock faltered for a second, then recovered. "I'm not going to pressure you. You can be angry for as long as you need. Fight with me or yell at me—I don't care, even if it takes forever. Just don't divorce me. Anything but that."I didn't respond, absentmindedly rubbing my lower back. He immediately moved behind me and started kneading t

Sadie's POVMom broke down in tears. "You saved my life, and I turned my back on you. This is all my fault."Dad's eyes were red too. "We had no idea about any of it. Who could've guessed Wendy would tamper with the donor records? We were fooled just like everyone else."Seth hung his head, looking more fragile than I'd ever seen him. "It's all on us. We'll never let this happen again. No matter what comes, I'll be there for you."Courtney looked wounded. "Sadie, we've been best friends for over ten years. You can't just throw that away. We promised we'd be friends for life. You're still supposed to be my maid of honor."I listened to all of it, and I felt nothing. If anything, it was so hollow it almost made me want to laugh."What's the point of bringing any of this up now? You're the ones who told me to stop being petty and let Brock have what he wanted."You only regret it because you found out the truth. If you never had, would I have just spent the rest of my life swallowi

Sadie's POVAfter leaving the hospital, I booked the next available flight. I didn't care where it went as long as it took me away from here.I arrived with nothing but the clothes on my back in a place where it almost never rained. The locals liked to say that people needed plenty of sun. They said it kept the sadness from settling in too deep.I figured they had a point. At the very least, maybe it could give this hollow heart of mine some reason to keep going. After years as a housewife, adjusting to a real job wasn't easy. But I needed to eat and I needed to push myself, so I found work at a bakery. For my trial shift, I made burnt cheesecake, my specialty. The owner, Nell, took one bite, and her eyes lit up."With talent like this, it's a waste keeping it all for your husband. You should've started doing this a long time ago."I pressed my lips together, unsure how to explain. In the end, I just shook my head with an awkward smile. "I won't be doing that anymore, not now an

Third-Person POV"You're a doctor, and you didn't even know your own wife was pregnant? She was still early, and her health was already compromised. By the time they brought her in, she was in bad shape."Brock knew this doctor. Carmen Voss had trained ahead of him, and her skills far surpassed his own. She looked at Sadie's chart and shook her head."I'm sorry. The baby didn't make it. On top of that, she's had a kidney removed. Getting pregnant again will be extremely difficult for her going forward."The color drained from Brock's face. "Sadie had a kidney removed? That's impossible."Carmen frowned, her tone sharpening. "She has a very obvious scar on her lower back, consistent with a donor nephrectomy. You seriously didn't know?"What kind of husband are you, Brock? Something this significant happened to the woman sleeping next to you, and you had no idea. That's not a joke."Brock opened his mouth, grasping for something to say. He wanted to explain that Sadie had spent th

Third-Person POVBrock called back immediately, his voice tight. "Say that again. What exactly did Sadie tell you?"The actress, Layla Simms, knew the routine by now. Brock never accompanied Sadie Hutton on her visits. He always found some excuse to avoid the visitation room, then called afterward to get every last detail. At first, she'd assumed he was worried about being exposed and getting Wendy in trouble. It wasn't until later that Layla realized he was checking on his wife's state of mind."Mrs. Emerson was much calmer this time than the last two visits. She said she didn't care whether I apologized or not, and she wasn't looking for remorse over what I'd done."She put a pregnancy test report in front of me and told me she was expecting. Then she said she wasn't coming back. She said she was ready to start over."Layla painted a vivid picture, and Brock barely had to imagine it. He already knew exactly what Sadie would have sounded like. She would have been perfectly calm

Sadie's POVAfter mailing the signed divorce papers to Brock, I drove to the cemetery.Riley's grave was covered in fresh flowers, along with new toys and clothes. Her grave looked well cared for, just like every year when I came to see her."Riley, it's Mommy. I'm here again. Every year, I come back wishing I hadn't let my temper cost you your life. I kept hoping you'd find your way back to me someday. But now that the day's finally here, I don't have the strength to start over."The tears came crashing down like a dam breaking, and the July sky cracked open right along with me, the downpour just as sudden and unpredictable.I pressed a gentle kiss to the headstone. Then, just like that, the rain stopped.I looked up and met Brock's eyes, soft with concern. He was holding an umbrella over me, most of his own body soaked through."You're not well, and the ground's cold. Come sit in the car."He draped his dry jacket over my shoulders, his voice going gentle. "I'm not signing th
