Chapter 218

Author: Lightmoon
"Did you have a nightmare?"

Nick's voice was gentle as he spoke. "I was heading downstairs to get some water when I heard you calling out. I got worried, so I knocked."

Had she really been calling out in her sleep? Had the dream unsettled her that much?

Still, Marisol figured it must've been involuntary.

She gave a weary nod and murmured, "I haven't been sleeping well."

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Lucian's bloodied face and the image of herself locked behind those dim, suffocating bars. It frayed her nerves like barbed wire.

After a beat of hesitation, she inquired, "Do you… have any sleeping pills?"

She couldn't continue like this. Without proper rest, her mind would only deteriorate further, and she wouldn't be able to return to her design work.

Nick shook his head. His tone was disapproving. "They're not good for long-term use."

Noticing her disappointment, he hesitated before offering gently, "If you're comfortable with it, I could sit by your bed until y

"Marisol, we've found a few candidates for you, and they're all from wealthy families. You'll be living in comfort," Harper said as she slid several photos across the table. Marisol barely glanced at them. The youngest man in the stack looked to be in his 30s, with greasy skin and a thick gold chain around his neck. It was the very image of a tasteless nouveau riche. "Comfort?" she scoffed. "Or is it your comfort you're after? How much did they offer you to sell me this eagerly?" There wasn't even rage anymore. Marisol was bitterly amused at their naked greed in marrying her off like a business transaction. "You ungrateful brat! Is that how you speak to your parents?" Damon barked. Marisol flicked a cold glance his way. The bloodied shard in her hand was tilting slightly. Damon shut up instantly. Harper, however, jabbed a finger at Marisol. Her face was flushed with fury. "You're dropping out of university today and coming home with us. This city's turned you wild and heart

A stifling tension choked the air. Harper Foster, shaken by the confrontation, shrank back and fell into silence. Still, she couldn't stop crying. Marisol said nothing. She raised her head and forced a brittle smile as she tried to maintain composure. Under the weight of dozens of stares, she pulled Harper up and began leading her off campus. She couldn't let this spectacle continue on university grounds. …Once outside, Marisol realized it wasn't just Harper who had shown up. Her father, Morris Speight, had come too, along with her uncle, Damon Foster. Their presence reeked of particular intentions. Ignoring Harper's insistence that they return to their hotel, Marisol booked a private room at a nearby restaurant and brought them there instead. She and Harper arrived first. The moment they stepped inside, Harper grabbed her hand and began to cry again. "Look at you. All these years without a word! I thought something terrible had happened to you. I cried myself to sleep

In late winter, inside Everton University's research institute, the office buzzed with a mix of cheers and groans. The team had just completed the first major phase of their project, and now everyone was eagerly debating where to go for the celebratory dinner. But in a quiet corner, Marisol and the project lead had already slipped away. "Is it okay to leave without saying anything?" Marisol asked, feeling slightly guilty about sneaking off. "It's fine," Nick replied with a soft smile. He reached up to straighten the fluffy white beanie on her head, which sat crooked from her haste. "Keep that on properly. Don't catch a cold. I've already sent the team their bonuses. As the lead, my job is to fund the fun. Besides, I made you a promise that once we wrapped up this phase, I'd make you potato pancakes. Have you changed your mind?" Marisol's eyes lit up. She'd loved potato pancakes as a child, though they were a rare treat. After running away from home, she hadn't tasted them s

Lucian stayed silent for a long time before blurting, "You want me to take responsibility?"Marisol took a deep breath. At that moment, she wanted nothing more than to find a brick and smash it against his head. "Stay calm," she thought. She couldn't win a fight against him after all. If she actually hurt him, she could end up detained. With graduation approaching, her future was too important to risk. She forced herself to stay calm. After a moment, Marisol regained her composure. She replied, "No. I want you to stay far away from me. I have no idea what you're thinking, and I've long since stopped expecting anything from you. I don't think you can give me what I want, and I don't want it anyway. "I want nothing to do with you. I don't even want to see you again." …With that, Marisol turned to leave, convinced she'd made herself clear. But Lucian's cold voice cut through the air. "So, can Nick give you what you want?" he asked. Marisol's brow furrowed. She and Nic

Evening had fallen, and they were at the corner of the dorm building.Marisol looked up slightly at the tall, imposing young man in front of her. She felt somewhat surprised, but more than anything, she was confused. It had been a year since they last saw each other. Now that they were face to face, she could see that Lucian looked haggard and weary. His handsome face bore an added fragility.Had something happened? Then again, what did that have to do with her? They were supposed to be less than strangers. The fact that Lucian had stopped her at all already caught her off guard.Marisol instinctively took a few steps back, putting some distance between them. Her expression was cold and guarded, and without saying a word, she turned to leave. There was nothing to say. However, her arm was grabbed, and with a forceful pull, she was slammed against the wall. Lucian forced her against the wall, trapping her there with no escape. Marisol panicked and instinctively looked around

Marisol was still in a daze. Even after getting into the car, her expression remained distant.Zachary glanced at her while driving and asked curiously, "Marisol, what's up? Did you find what you were looking for at the monastery?"She shook her head, unsure how to respond.Zachary didn't press as he was just making small talk. Finally free of altitude sickness, he happily chewed on buffalo jerky while humming along to a song playing in the background. The black SUV moved forward steadily. Not long after they set off, Marisol started feeling dizzy. Since she had basically done all the driving yesterday and had gone out that morning, she was getting tired and worried she might be getting altitude sickness too. So, she took a small breath of oxygen, wrapped herself tightly in her down jacket and blanket, and closed her eyes to rest. She fell asleep shortly after....Before long, winter came. It was the weekend, and with a break in their project, Marisol and Nick had planned a
