LENA'S POV

"Where..."

I woke up in my own bed the next morning, completely disoriented. My room. My floral bedspread. My desk cluttered with textbooks and college brochures.

It took me a while to get my bearings, blinking tiredly at the sunlight streaming through my curtains. The events of yesterday felt like a fever dream—the confrontation with Mr. Dawson, the tense family dinner, falling asleep against Jace's shoulder while Martin snored softly in the background.

I rubbed my eyes, groaning. E

"Nicole, come on. You know his phone password—and it's your middle name, not some random number. You guys know each other's parents. You finish each other's sentences. You say you hate him and that he's annoying, but you light up every time he walks into a room.""Shut up" Nicole hissed, narrowing her eyes at me."I see how you look at him when he talks about other girls. You two aren't 'just friends.'" I used air quotes to emphasize my point. "And how would you know?" Nicole shot back, her eyes glistening with what might have been tears or might have been pure rage. "What the hell would you know about real friendship, huh? After lying to my face for months? After using us?"She was on a roll now, her voice getting louder, drawing curious looks from the few other customers in the restaurant. "You told me all that stuff about being bullied—about Allison nearly putting you six feet under, about the names they called you, about how isolated and alone you felt—and I believed you. I felt

"Nicole! Oh my God, I'm so glad you came."I tried to run up to her, to pull her into a hug the way we used to do, but Nicole just glared at me with such venom in her eyes that I stopped dead in my tracks."Get the hell away from me, you fucking traitor," she spat.I'd spent the past hour or so at Marco's pizza restaurant, sitting in our usual booth by the window, twiddling my thumbs anxiously and checking my phone every thirty seconds while I waited for Nicole to show up. TThe lunch rush had died down, leaving the place mostly empty except for a few stragglers and the smell of garlic bread hanging heavy in the air.Marco himself wasn't there, but every so often, Marco's new employee, Susan, at least according to her name tag, would swing by with a forced customer-service smile and ask, "Hey, are you sure you don't want to order anything? Maybe some soda? A slice?"And every time, I'd give her the same apologetic answer: "I'm sorry, I'm expecting someone. She'll be here soon." Even

That was all the confirmation I needed. All the proof that what I'd built over these past months; my reputation, my status, my place at the top, actually meant something. That people actually liked me. Respected me. Wanted me to win.I couldn't fail this. I couldn't let my entire life get snatched away from me because of Allison's messed up revenge scheme.I'd worked too hard. Come too far. Survived too much to ever let that happen.I closed my locker without taking anything out.All my things, as far as I was concerned, would stay exactly where they were. I would work this out somehow, one way or another. I had to.This was just a little break, I told myself firmly. Some temporary time off to regroup and think and figure out my next move.I'd be back. I'd clear my name, prove Allison was lying, and I'd walk back through these doors vindicated.Maybe even in time for prom. Maybe even in time to accept that crown."You can do this," I muttered to myself under my breath, adjusting my ba

I didn't need to be told twice. I clearly wasn't welcome here anymore. And since I already had whatever evidence I'd been able to gather—the SD card still burning a hole in my pocket like radioactive material—there was no sense in hanging around school any longer. It would only attract more trouble to me, and lord knew I didn't need any more of that right then."No running in the halls!" a teacher's voice rang out from behind me.I was forced to slow down from my full sprint to a brisk, awkward speed-walk that probably looked just as suspicious. My heart was still beating wildly against my ribs, my palms sweating so badly I had to wipe them on my jeans. The adrenaline from nearly getting caught by Mrs. Sinclair was still coursing through my system, making my hands shake and my breath come in short, uneven gasps.I made my way through the emptying corridors as the period change began, students flooding out of classrooms in waves of noise and movement.I kept my head down, the oversized

"Fuck," Jace breathed out quietly, his body tensing as he spotted her too. "What if she sees you? You're not supposed to be here anymore. That's trespassing or some shit on top of everything else, isn't it?"I couldn't even answer him. My throat had completely closed up. I just kept that heavy book pressed against my face like it was some kind of magical shield that could protect me somehow.Mr. Patterson said something to Mrs. Sinclair, gesturing toward the back section of the library, practically pointing his finger at me.She nodded curtly, her sharp hawk-like eyes beginning to scan the room, moving from table to table, just as a predator searching for prey would."Lena Hartwell?"Her voice literally cut through the quiet library atmosphere, piercing my ears. My entire body went completely rigid with pure terror."Is that you?" Mrs. Sinclair's voice grew louder, more incredulous and outraged with each word."What on earth are you doing on school grounds? You were expelled effective

Lena"I'll talk to my dad," Jace said.I stared at him, trying to process what he'd just said."You'll what?" I exclaimed, my voice high pitched with disbelief. "Absolutely not. No way. No way, Jace.""Come on, Lena—""No, I'm serious." I pulled my hands out of his and crossed my arms defensively. "We're both staying far, far away from that situation until the dust cloud in your house settles into actual peace. That means no dragging you deeper into my problems, and definitely no getting your father involved.""But what about when you said...""I know I was the one who brought it up earlier, but I genuinely wasn't thinking clearly when I said it. I was desperate and panicking and just grasping at straws.""Yeah, that's the thing though," Jace interrupted, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. His expression was serious and determined, his brows drawn close together. "Supposing this forger guy really is dangerous, like actually connected to some shady shit—""There's a chance

LENA’S POVI stared up at Jace in disbelief, my heart flipping in my chest.I felt stubborn unwanted hope flickering in my chest despite everything.“Are you serious?” I breathed. “You’re really not going?”He came down a few steps, his hand sliding along the bannister. “Where the hell do you think you’re going?” Jace closed the distance in a few steps and pulled me to my feet. His hands grabbed my waist firmly, not soft like before, and pulled me flush against him till we were skin on skin. The contact sent sparks racing through my body. It felt strong, and war
