Chapter 7

Ava

I passed a hand under my eyes, wiping tears, while I heard the priest’s speech. The sky was clear, and the sun illuminated the bare coffin before me.

With a book in his hand, the priest continued to speak, extolling Sandra's skill as a woman, how she would be welcomed at the gates of heaven, and how she would observe us all from above. I sighed and kept my gaze fixed on the light brown coffin, imagining myself in there, Sandra.

Despite all the time that had passed, I had not prepared myself for the idea of living a life without her, of living this life, the one she had saved, without her.

Sandra was the only person who really mattered to me, there was no one else. She was my whole family, and now I was alone, with no one.

At her funeral, there were few people, not even the director had come.

When I called him, he bothered to call the funeral home and take Sandra away without too much fuss. When I told him about the funeral, he told me he couldn’t, that he should receive new bene
