Marcus didn’t know what to think as he went to his father’s floor. He had been so sure he’d been careful. He’d scanned every shadow with all his senses before visiting Dani at the motel and when he’d sneaked her into headquarters. So how the hell had Henrique found out? Did he have someone who could mask themselves from him? Or was Nicholas more than he seemed? A Seer, perhaps? Bonding to a vampire that old had to come with more than just immortality.

His hand brushed the invisible mark at his neck, the reminder of Dani’s claim. Could Nicholas have seen through Aidan’s magic?

One thing was certain. Henrique already knew about Dani, so his time was running out. His soul mate was already caught up in whatever twisted game the head Elder was playing with Alessandro. She was already in danger.

The elevator doors slid open, and sound hit him immediately. Each Elder’s floor was meant to be silent and secure, which meant the noise could only be from one source. His father’s door gaped open,

Dani gave herself one night before answering the Alpha’s summons. Ethan wouldn’t come for her in person—he liked to maintain his polished image among the humans. That made her a little safer in her apartment, at least for now. He also wouldn’t want to look weak by chasing down a female.Even if the female had made a fool of him by vanishing on the night they were meant to have a mating ceremony, where he’d invited several Alphas under his command. The thought made her stomach twist. Her punishment was coming, and she dreaded it. She wanted to give Kira a little more time to recover, in case her wolf needed to defend them both.Sliding out from under a car, she wiped her oil-stained hands with a rug. Taking engines apart and putting them back together always used to calm her, but now it only left her restless. Waiting for the winds to blow her whichever way they decided rubbed her nerves raw.She was used to being in control, so this situation was driving her insane. A run would have s

What the hell was happening?Alessandro had never spoken those words to him, never admitted that his instincts were always right. It would be like admitting he was better, which Alessandro would never accept. But now his father stood there nodding, sipping his drink as if nothing had happened. He couldn’t have compelled him. Compulsion didn’t work on vampires, let alone one older and stronger. That was unheard of. His talent was potent, but it was limited to humans, and maybe the weakest, newly turned. Not this. Not Alessandro. He had to be imagining it.“Get the League on this,” Alessandor ordered, as he carefully paced the wreck of the suite. “I want every household scanned before the Council arrives. Round up anyone unknown or suspicious, even humans.” Calm. Like Marcus had told him to be. What? “This witch is hiding in plain sight. Maybe waiting to attack when the Council gathers. Or they may even have been sent by one of them. If so, this is a blatant declaration of war. We n

She stalked through her apartment, every nerve on edge. The place looked untouched, but she knew someone had been inside. Cushions slightly out of shape, coffee table an inch to the side. Their scent clung to the couch and curtains, sharp and invasive. It still lingered faintly in the air like they had settled in to wait for her. Probably sent to figure out where she could have gone. Her lips peeled back in a low growl. He had expected this, but it still felt like a violation. Her apartment was her own hard-won territory. Ethan had no right to invade it. Kira would never tolerate it.She forced herself to take a slow breath and kept moving through the studio apartment. It was bare, as always. She never had time to make it more comfortable. A narrow bed shoved in the corner, unmade, with clothes tossed across it since the day she left. It looked even smaller now, after Marcus’s massive bed. After his world. She shoved those thoughts away again.“This is your life, Dani,” she sighed

One blink, Dani was on the roof; the next, she was in the guest bedroom. The world lurched sideways, her stomach churning. Aidan’s hand slipped from her arm, and she staggered. The grin on Aidan’s face was smug. He’d known what teleportation would do to her. Her organs felt like they’d been shaken in a blender. “Sorry,” Aidan said, not sounding sorry at all. “It takes some getting used to. But we need to leave now, so grab your things.”Now? She’d only just said goodbye to Marcus. She could still feel the heat of his kiss.“It’s not safe here, Dani,” Aidan added quietly, as if reading her mind. Her frown must have given her away because he answered without her asking.“I feel what you feel. I feed on it. You and Marcus have been a banquet lately. But you need to leave; this isn’t the right time to talk. Get your big girl panties on and move.”She shook herself out of her misery and grabbed her rucksack off the unmade bed. Marcus’s scent still lingered on the bedding. Her fingers tig

Just after eleven, Marcus found Danielle on the roof garden, her gaze fixed on the pale strip of beach below. Her sadness pressed against his chest like a weight. Did she know what had happened yet? Would she only piece it together once their separation began to poison her life in the pack?He stepped beside her and watched some children playing in the sand or chasing waves while their watchful parents or guardians lounged in the sun. They looked untouched by war, duty, or blood.“I’ll take you to the beach one day,” he murmured.“Don’t make promises you can’t keep, Marcus.” Her voice was soft, but the sting was sharp. “I want to make them,” he said, swallowing the lump that made his voice break. “I want to make so many of them.” But they both knew he couldn’t. He exhaled and turned away from the view to look at his soulmate.“Have you packed?”“I didn’t have much with me,” she answered.“Will you... Will you be safe when you get back home?”Aidan’s warning kept playing back in his
