HEAVEN
I froze, staring hard at the podium.
"I’d like to make an announcement: my wife—well, ex-wife now—"
My eyes widened in confusion. Atlas had only gone to the stage to receive his award. What was he saying?
"...we've decided to go our separate ways. Heaven and I are getting divorced. Thank you."
I turned to the stage, my vision blurring as Atlas smiled, stepping down like he hadn’t just shattered my world in front of the entire country. Ex-wife? Did I hear him correctly? Was this a nightmare?
Gasps filled the air.
My breath caught in my throat as I watched him stride off the stage with the award in hand and a wide smile on his face like he hadn't just ruined my day.
Was this a bad dream?
"This is shocking news! Are you really divorcing your husband?" The interviewer beside me questioned bringing me back to reality.
I wasn't hearing things. This was really happening.
Atlas just announced our divorce on national TV at the biggest award of the year without me having any idea about it.
He really decided to blindside me and divorce me in that manner?
My heart hammered in my chest, the color drained from my face, a wave of rage surging through me as my heart shattered into pieces. I couldn't believe what just happened. I couldn't believe he had publicly announced a divorce without talking to me about it.
Never in my life did I expect us to divorce. Not in this way.
I should have seen this coming when he suddenly turned against me.
As I stood there, frozen in shock, the audience continued to erupt into a mixture of gasps and murmurs. The lights from the cameras and phones blinded me, making it hard to see Atlas's smug face.
Atlas approached me with that annoying smile on his face like he hadn't just humiliated me in front of the entire country. I felt like I was going to collapse, but I grabbed my purse without much thought and my legs somehow carried me out of the hall ignoring the rush and calls from the reporters, journalists and bloggers who wanted to cover the most juicy news of the country.
“Move!” I yelled, pushing through the crowd.
A cab screeched to a halt, and I threw myself inside. I elbowed past reporters, their microphones nearly hitting my face, before diving into a cab.
"Belmont estate," I snapped, slamming the door shut.
The driver gawked at me through the rearview mirror. "You’re Belmont’s wife, right?
Belmont was a household name in New York. It was almost as popular as the president's name and of course, people going there weren't expected to board a taxi.
"Go!" I shouted in frustration as the bangs from the reporters got louder. They just couldn't get the hint that I wasn't in the mood for any stupid interview.
The driver zoomed off that instant and I shut my eyes in frustration. Gosh! Why must I face this terrible humiliation? Why didn't Atlas just talk about it at home? Why didn't we end everything at home? Why did he feel the need to humiliate me this much?
"Aren't you the Belmont's wife?" The driver asked again, stealing a glance at me through the rearview mirror. I opened my eyes that instant feeling a rush of rage.
Of course, a lot of people recognised me.
I ignored the driver as my phone started buzzing in my purse. I knew what it was but I wasn't ready to face it yet. But then, I just couldn't escape facing it everywhere. The driver turned on his radio that minute and of course the first thing that had to come on was my divorce announcement.
Gosh!
“Breaking news! Billionaire Atlas Belmont has just announced his divorce during his acceptance speech at—”
"Turn that off!" I barked, my patience snapping and he did as told but a few minutes later, he turned back to me.
"Is it true that you're getting divorced? Why? You guys were like the perfect couple ever. What went wrong.." The driver rambled on. Why can't he just get a hint? How can someone be that insensitive?
"Can you just focus on driving?" I asked almost raising my voice but I needed to control my anger. I couldn't pass the aggression on him.
Thankfully, he shut up and the rest of the ride was in peace and quiet but when I finally got home, I was horrified by the scene I met.
My mother-in-law and sister-in-law were just at the entrance watching or rather ordering the maids to throw out my things. Of course they knew about it. They had definitely planned it with Atlas.
But that wasn't the most annoying thing, but the fact that my belongings were scattered across the driveway. Suitcases, clothes, shoes—all dumped like trash.
Anger rushed through my brain that minute and I could feel myself going crazy.
"What the hell are you doing?" I shouted as I rushed towards them.
"What does it look like? You're out!" Summer, Atlas's younger sister retorted, her head high up the sky.
"You have no right to do this!" I hollered, my frustration increasing. They couldn't just wait for me to return and get my things.
"Oh, we do. You're no longer married to my son," she spat, her thick brows raising in the most horrible manner.
"Actually, we can," his mother said, her voice dripping with venom. "You’re no longer part of this family."
"That’s not official yet!" I shot back.
Atlas’s voice cut through the chaos. "It will be."
I turned to see him approaching, a file in hand, his expression as cold as stone.
"Sign it, Heaven," he said flatly, tossing the file at me.
"Why?" I demanded. "Why should I agree to this?"
"You know why," he replied, his tone devoid of emotion.
I stared at the papers, my hands trembling.
"If you’re hoping for compensation," his mother sneered, "forget it. You’ve leeched off my son long enough."
"Why should I do that?" I asked as he approached me. My emotions were all over the place now and I wasn't sure of what to focus on.
"We both know this isn't working," he replied succinctly and I stared at him in disbelief.
"Does that sound like a meaningful reason?" I shouted but he only lifted his shoulders in a half shrug.
"Just sign it," he said coldly instead. I glared at him as I picked up the file and pulled out the divorce paper.
This was really hard to believe.
"There's no need staring at it. All you have to do is sign it. It shouldn't be that hard to do, right?" I heard Atlas say behind me and I lifted my head to look at him. Of course, there was no sign of remorse or regret in his eyes.
He was looking as stoic as ever and I knew at that moment that there was nothing that could make him change his mind.
"This is a pen," Summer said with a mocking look and I grabbed it from her.
Without giving it much thought, I scrawled my name across the line. The papers hit Atlas’s chest with a satisfying thud as I threw them back at him.
"Goodbye," Summer sang, her
smile triumphant.
I didn’t look back as I walked out. Out of their house. Out of their lives.
Out of my loveless marriage.
Three years of heartbreak. This was what I wanted—wasn’t it?
CHAPTER 14HEAVEN As I strolled into her office that evening, I met her staring out the window, her back turned to me, and a small smile tugged at my lips. She certainly didn't know what was coming for her.I guess she had been so engrossed in deciding on whether to vape or not, because she didn't even notice my presence until her assistant called her."Miss Langston," the willowy lady called. I wonder if she was doubling as a model and assistant because she was exactly the epitome of a model. I made a mental note to ask about her while leaving, maybe we could consider her for our runway coming up soon. She turned back, a frown on her face but it immediately disappeared when our eyes met, only to be replaced with widened eyes as she immediately tucked the e-cigarette in the pocket of her Palazzo pants.Amanda had always been so stylish and that day wasn't an exception. No wonder she owned a fashion house. "Heaven," she called, blinking as she walked up to me. Obviously surprised to
CHAPTER 13HEAVEN"How did it go?" I questioned as I walked back into my company that morning. I met Jenna on the ground floor, and we decided to go up together. Earlier, she had insisted on going with me to Belmont, but I had refused since I wanted to face Atlas and the others alone. Instead, I had told her to go check up on Oliver. I was still bothered by his statement last night. Even though he later tried to wave it off as a joke, I just couldn't stop thinking there was some truth in it. What if there was really the possibility that Atlas punch had not been so strong to cause such injury? What if he had planned the whole thing and intentionally hurt himself? I had found the whole thing weird from the beginning. Yeah, Atlas punch could have been strong enough to make him lose his balance, but could it really lead to hitting his head? On the other hand, why would Oliver want to hurt himself for me?I was well aware of Oliver's love for me but, would that really cause him to do th
CHAPTER 12HEAVENHe didn't know what was coming for him. This was the moment I had been waiting for all these years. During our marriage, I had been forbidden from going to the company, but this time, I was not only stepping into the company but the highest room ever. The boardroom. And I was going to seal his fate.As I stepped into that boardroom, the air shifted. I could feel the heavy tension in the room but as all heads turned, the tension escalated. Some with confusion. Others with recognition and surprise. Of course, who wouldn't be surprised to see their CEO's ex wife and most of all, the one competitor they despised. The rival they couldn't surpass now unlike before. Who would want to see a business rival in their boardroom? Usually, Belmont had been the leading shoe brand but in the past few months, we had taken over and Belmont had probably been pushed to the last because even other companies were doing better than them. Why? Atlas always prided himself as the best busi
CHAPTER 11ATLAS I drew in a deep breath as I walked out of the police station that morning.Finally.I couldn't believe I literally spent all my night in that cold cell for a crime that shouldn't be as serious as they were making it to be. Aggravated assault? It had only been a single punch. Staying in the cell made me cold and all I could think about was that I wasn't really at fault like they claim it to be.Yeah, I was guilty for punching him, but he had punched me first. And it just doesn't make any sense that all that had happened due to a single punch. It was his fault for not being able to take a punch. I just found it so odd that he almost broke his skull because of my punch. His family definitely wanted to pursue the case. My lawyer had arrived that morning, even though he was a bit late, I was still thankful that I was able to get bailed out, though they were still pursuing a criminal suit but at least, I had the chance to fight back."We need to hurry. I have to attend a
CHAPTER 10HEAVEN"How is he?" Amy's voice shook as she rushed towards me and my eyes widened in surprise. Shouldn't she be on a vacation with her boyfriend or something? Mom said she was returning later tonight or tomorrow and we had only been in the hospital for a little less than thirty minutes and she showed up.Did she fly from somewhere or what? It didn't seem like their vacation was in New York and even if it was, I just found it so surprising that she would rush down here in a matter of minutes when she ought to be somewhere far away from home. They were best friends so it was understandable how concerned and worried she was. If something happens to Jenna or Raquel, I would certainly be the first one to fly there."He is being attended to. I'm waiting for the doctor," I told her, and she ran her hand through her hair. She turned back to me a few seconds later and the concern on her face immediately morphed into disgust as she threw me a scowl."This is all your fault!" She acc
CHAPTER 9ATLAS"What was that?"Amanda questioned as we walked into my house that busy evening.I was still trying to wrap my head around what just happened at the gala. I couldn't stop thinking about the blood that gushed out of Oliver's head and how he suddenly lost consciousness. Does it really make sense that my punch would be that powerful to cause such damage? Did he trip or something? I couldn't fathom anything and it was really messing with my brain. The way Heaven had looked at me like I was a murderer and the way she had avoided me like a plague shattered my heart into pieces. I was still trying to get in her good books and this had to happen, just why? Why didn't I stop myself from punching Oliver?I should have just ignored them and tried to speak to Heaven later on. I just couldn't accept that they were together. I couldn't believe how Heaven had changed so much. It had been hard to reach her all this while and when she appeared, it was obvious she was back for blood.Fro
