CHAPTER : THE SUSPECT

"The doctor says Maya is stable for now," Alex reported. "But she hasn't woken up yet. It might be hours before we know anything."

Austin nodded, but his mind was still racing.

"Alex," he said slowly. "What do you think really happened here?"

Alex was quiet for a moment. "I don't know, Alpha. The evidence seems clear, but..."

"But?"

"It just doesn't feel right. Why would Rosemary call for help if she was the one who hurt Maya? Why not just run away?"

That was exactly what Austin had been thinking.

"And another thing," Alex continued. "I've been watching Rosemary since she arrived. She's been nothing but kind to Maya. They seemed to really like each other."

"Ariana says she was jealous."

"Maybe. But jealous enough to try to kill someone? That's a big jump."
