“You’re late again,” Mom greeted the moment I stepped inside. I had just gotten back from an out-of-town seminar—I thought maybe I’d get a little peace. I was wrong.

“I just got home from Baguio. Can I drink water first before the lecture starts?” I said as I reached for the tumbler on the dining table. I was exhausted, but apparently, that wasn’t enough to get a pass.

She was standing by the kitchen counter, arms crossed—like a teacher looking for mistakes before you even speak.

“What are you doing, Laura?”

I looked up. “Huh? Doing what where?”

“With Edward,” she said flatly. “Don’t even try to deny it. I’ve heard everything. Even about Michelle. This little sabotage you’re doing—in your own way.”

I let out a laugh. But not because it was funny—more like that kind of laugh you can’t help when things are just too absurd.

“Sabotage? Really? I’m the bad guy now?”

“Laura—”

“Mom, come on. You know something’s going on between Edward and Michelle, and I’m the one you’re blaming?” I stood s

“…and that’s why Rousseau believed man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains.”I stared at the whiteboard, but none of it was sinking in. My laptop was filled with paragraphs, but barely any of them had anything to do with Social Philosophy.Chains, huh, I muttered under my breath. My mind was crowded. The plan. The act. The way Cole sometimes looked at me like none of this was scripted. And just yesterday—I caught Emily on the phone with Edward. Talking like nothing happened. Like they didn’t almost get exposed in the explosion I set off.Prof. Arandia suddenly stopped pacing. “Miss Reyes,” he said, looking directly at me.I snapped out of it. “Yes, sir?”“Would you care to explain how Rousseau’s idea connects to modern alienation?”Dead air.I smiled. My brain, however, was halfway across the galaxy.“Uh… it’s the idea of… self versus society?” I guessed. He nodded, but his look said: Barely got away with that one. After class, I was the first to leave the room. I couldn’t st

I was walking toward the lab when I saw something I didn’t expect—Or maybe I did expect it, but I was just hoping it wouldn’t happen.Michelle. Sitting on a hallway bench, legs crossed, red lips, and that smile—more dangerous than any exam I’ve ever taken. And beside her? Cole.He was looking down, typing on his phone, but Michelle was all over him. Giggling, leaning in just a little too close, casually touching his arm. Like he wasn’t her ex. Like she didn’t sleep with his dad.“Hi, Laura,” Michelle greeted, throwing in a wink.I didn’t smile. But Cole? He straightened up like he was about to start playing his part.“Hey,” he said. “Michelle was just asking if I wanted to hang out later.”What.“Oh?” I said, my tone sharp enough to cut. “Why don’t you bring Edward too? You know—make it a reunion.”Michelle laughed. “You’re so witty, girl.”She turned to Cole, pinching his arm. “I miss this guy. Back then, one text and you were right there. Not like now. Ever since you and Laura got

“Why does this school suddenly feel… so small?”I asked Cole as we stepped out of the car in the university parking lot. His face looked serious, but I could tell from the way he gripped my hand—he was nervous, even if he refused to admit it.I squeezed his hand back. Not because it was sweet… but because it felt like I was being led to the sacrificial table. The moment we walked through the gates, two underclass girls sitting on a bench turned their heads.“OMG, is that Laura?”“She’s with Cole?! I thought yesterday was just a prank. My god!”Here we go again.I straightened my walk. Shoulders back, chin up, a slight smirk. I knew people would talk, but I had one goal today: make it look real.“Hey,” Cole muttered as we entered the main building. “Relax. You’re not auditioning for a part.”“Easy for you to say,” I shot back. “You thrive on attention. I thrive on stress.”He chuckled a little. I couldn’t tell if he was enjoying this or if he was just really good at faking it.As we cl

If there were an Oscar for the most ridiculously dramatic script in my life, this one would win. Hands down.I’m now the fake girlfriend of the same guy who practically yelled “You’re ruining my family!” at me just two weeks ago.But guess what? The tables have turned—because now he knows the truth too.“Fix the wording, it reads like a thesis,” I whispered with a grin, tapping the notebook in Cole’s hands. We were in the art room—just me, Cole, and one A4 bond paper he boldly titled “Contract.”“Alright,” he said, writing the title across the top. “‘Terms and Conditions of the Fake Relationship.’ Faye, maybe read it before you use it as tissue when you get a nosebleed from holding in all your rage.”“Wow, you assume a lot,” I said, leaning back in my chair. “You’re the one who got cheated on. I should really be nicer.”He gasped slightly, but didn’t say anything. Because he knew I had a point.I looked down as he started jotting down the rules:No real feelings involved.PDA in publi

I used to think silence meant peace. That if the world stopped shouting, I could finally breathe. But lately, silence has been louder than any argument. Louder than Michelle’s lies, or Edward’s fake concern. Louder than Emily’s refusal to meet my eyes.Today, the silence screamed again.I sat in the library room—Edward’s precious little sanctuary, where every book was neatly arranged by genre, then by color. A man who fakes emotions but alphabetizes pain. I was supposed to be here just to pass the time. Pretend I still cared about being in this house. But today, I had a different reason.Hidden in the back shelf, behind a row of old medical encyclopedias, was a folder.Red.Unlabeled.And dusty enough to suggest it hadn’t been touched in years. My fingers trembled as I opened it, scanning page after page. Names. Receipts. Wire transfers. Some were from foundations I didn’t even know existed. One document had Michelle’s name signed as a “consultant” for a company that, on paper, helped
