“Mr Cole, welcome back, sir.”

The valet stepped forward the moment Asher pushed open the car door, the evening chill brushing against his shirt as he climbed out. The lights from the apartment complex cast a soft glow across the driveway, and Asher nodded absently, exhaustion weighing heavily on his features.

He extended the keys without looking, eager to get upstairs and shut the world out for a few hours. Just as the valet’s fingers brushed the keyring, Asher paused.

“Wait.”

His voice was quiet but firm enough to make the valet stop midstep. Something tugged at the back of his mind, a small reminder he almost forgot. Asher turned away and walked toward the rear passenger door, loosening his tie as he moved.

“I left my coat in the back,” he said, more to himself than to the valet.

He opened the door, expecting to see the neatly folded coat exactly where he had tossed it earlier. His hand reached inside, fingers grazing the fabric, and he pulled it out in one smooth motion.
