A very sick Joke

SELENA’S POV

The night cool breeze hit my skin as I walked blindly down the almost deserted streets, my mind reeling from the rejection I had just suffered. We were laughing and chatting over dinner moments ago, and now I was alone on the streets with his words replaying in my head.

"You're just the spoiled daughter of the Beta, Selena. You don't have any speciality or have enough knowledge to assist me in ruling this pack. "

I sat there, mouth opened wide in shock before I regained myself and realised what he said was actually true.

"I can learn," I started, struggling with words. "I can train, Caius. If you want power, then I shall be powerful."

But he shook his head, his gold eyes unreadable. "There’s no need for that. I already have someone I want as my Luna.."

“What?” I stared at him in shock.

That could only mean one thing, he had all thai planned out. He had made this decision a long time ago and used this facade of a dinner to break things off with me.

“Yes, she is more powerful and has the qualities of a good leader.”

“That’s enough.” I got up, anger seething in me. "I, Selena, accept your rejection."

There was a searing pain in my heart, as if claws ripped my heart apart from within. But I'd not let him witness me break. I'd turned on my heel and walked out, which was why I ended up alone on the streets..

If I knew it would end up like this, I wouldn't have come back. I wouldn't have rejected the offer from the Moon Goddess and start afresh where I'd never recall Caius and how he'd left me in tatters. But now it's too late, anyway. I had set my mind. I had pleaded for this second chance, and now I would just have to toughen up over it.

*****************************

The harsh taste of the alcohol burned down my throat as I swallowed once more, and it continued all the way to my chest while i sat on the stool in front of the bartender

"Another one?" The bartender glanced up at me, his hand drawing along the bar in front of me.

I pushed my cup to me. "Make it stronger."

His face dropped, not to put the liquid gold into my cup.

"Bad night?"

I smiled. "Something like that."

I spun the glass and sat in the chair, staring up at the ceiling before downing the whiskey down my throat. Blazing fire travelled down through my chest but never reached the cold and hollow space inside.

I fell off the bar and onto the dance floor, stumbling. If I couldn't drink myself to death, I'd carry myself to death in stupid forgetfulness. Music boomed in the bar, pounding within me as I dissolved into rhythm. I felt arms wrapped around my waist, but I didn't care. I just wanted to forget about the rejection and let loose.

But the hurt simmers hot within, smouldering like a fresh wound. Clubbing and dancing were never sufficed to make up for Caius's venomous barbs.

After drinking a whole bottle, which was more than I could handle, I decided to go home and sleep the terrible night away. As I stumbled out of the bar, I started to make my way to the sideline to find a cab home when I heard my name.

"Selena?" A familiar voice called, and i turned to meet an old friend from the pack, Daniel walking toward me. "I never expected to see you here, and why are you so drunk?"

I crossed my arms, skin bare. "What do you want, Daniel?"

He stumbled over to me, smelling of booze. "Come on, I'll walk you home. You don't have to be out here alone."

"I'm fine," I snarled, trying to step back.

His arm flashed out, his hand closing around my wrist when I attempted to retreat. "Don't even think about it. It's not safe for someone like you, a little thing like you, to be out walking around drunk."

My werewolf Aya growled in confusion. ‘Something's not right, Selena. He has dark intentions.’

I shivered with fear. I fought to break free, but Daniel's fingers only tightened. "Let go."

"Just be a good girl and come with me.” He let out a growl. "I'm doing this for your own good."

Aya cursed in my head. ‘Fall back.’

My fear accelerated as I struggled to escape from his hold. "Let me go. I don’t want to go with you."

He refused to let go and continued to drag me toward his car, but he yanked away from me by a strong force that had me stumbling to the ground. I looked up to see who my saviour was, and my eyes widened;

Lucian.

Daniel didn’t even attempt to fight back because he knew he was at great disadvantage going against one of the most powerful werewolf in the pack, so scurried to his feet and ran towards his car after furiously apologising.

I was there, my head in this space of feeling disconnected from what was happening. I should have been scared, but the only thing I could feel was this kind of warmth wrapped around me. A tug at my core that I hadn't even realized was happening. I was trying to breathe, and before I could even attempt to get caught up on it, Aya's voice yelled in my mind, soft but firm.

Mate.

My heart pounded with fear as Lucian's eyes edged slowly to mine. No glint of gold in them, and for the first time ever, no fury in their depths, a certain something soft instead. There was a thick tension as we stared at each other.

No.

That was impossible.

Lucian. My ex-mate’s brother, who I had come back to destroy, was my second-chance mate.

His gaze met mine as he came towards me. "Selena—"

I stood up immediately and stepped away from him. "No, please don’t."

The Moon goddess must be playing a very sick joke with me.

  • VENGEFUL TIES: Bonds formed from Revenge    Ancestral Bowl of Ardyth

LUCIAN’S POVSelena swallowed hard, She was frightened and I could understand why. There was an old myth about the ancestral bowl of Ardyth that we had both learned as kids. If two unmated wolves combined their blood in the bowl, instant death would follow in a cruel and ruthless way.Selena's voice came out tight and raspy."Lucian… are you sure?"I nodded, keeping my gaze on her. "I am sure."Her hand trembled, but she did not step back. That was one thing I loved about her, behind the fear, behind the uncertainty, she was firm. The court members whispered in chorus behind us like a brewing storm."He's mad.""Is he going to kill them both?""Why risk his life?"I turned away from their whispers because I had already seen how today would turn out.********FLASHBACKAfter the coronation ended, I made sure Selena was settled in her room before I retired for the night. I hadn’t closed my eyes for up to thirty minutes when I saw myself standing at the palace yard. The priestess had sli

SELENA’S POV“Selena Ravenwood, Beta Prince Lucian, step forth.” The High Priestess summoned us.I released the breath I was holding and took a step towards the altar, with Lucian beside me. His hand brushed against mine, warm and reassuring. The palace yard was filled as the entire royal court was present, their eyes aglow with the blue light of the full moon. Caius stood with them with his face expressionless and Elira beside him, her lips curled in the very same evil grin that I had not been able to get rid of in my head since the incident in the restroom last night. Her red eyes, that ice-sharp authority that had me trapped, that smile that still seared my skin. There was something up with her, and I knew it to my bones. She was still the same as my past life, but was Lucian the same, too? I was so confused. After thinking it through that night, I had planned to tell Lucian that morning to get his reaction but he disappeared for the rest of the day after he told me about the mat

CAIUS’S POV‘This can’t be true,’ I thought to myself, clenching my fists in fury so hard I can feel my knuckles throb. My eyes followed them everywhere, Lucian and Selena. His arm slung casually high on her shoulder, staking his claim on her and she didn’t stop him. She smiled at him and blushed at his compliment as if it was normal. My blood boiled.I knew it was all staged. The second chance mate was all bullshit. There was no way the moon goddess would bestow a weak wolf like Selena a second chance mate. It was all a pretense to save her from being humiliated. Lucian might have agreed to it now but he would back out once he found his mate which would only embarrass Selena more.I downed the drink in my hand, trying to quench the fire burning in my chest. I wasn't jealous, definitely not. I didn't mind if she moved on from me, she could be with whoever, but not my brother.Selena excused herself to the restroom and I knew that was my chance to talk sense into Lucian. Lucian laughe

SELENA’S POV"You're doing better than I thought you'd do," Lucian whispered, his hand around mine as we walked through the crowd.I forced a smile at him and replied, "I'm just trying to get through this night I guess."“It will be over soon.” He squeezed my hand as we stopped in front of the King and Queen of Ardyth, a country who has the best and longest alliance with Lunaroria. The king’s blue eyes sized me up before his face broke into a wide grin."Prince Lucian, it’s good to see you again." His eyes looked at me again. “You have a very beautiful mate. Selena, right?”“Yes, your highness.” I returned the smile. The Queen, who was in a silver glittering dress, caressed my cheeks. "You two do make a good pair."“I know, right.” Lucian placed his hand on my lower back, pulling me closer. “I feel like the luckiest man on earth right now.”“You should.” The king laughed and Lucian joined him. "I used to hope that my daughter will be your mate but it seems we can’t go against fate."L

LUCIAN'S POV "Lucian, what the fuck are you doing?" Caius whisper-yelled at me as he glared at me."Calm down bro," I whispered back while smiling widely at him. "I’m her second chance mate. I thought I should give a little surprise on your coronation and also you don’t need to worry about me playing with her."Caius wanted to say something back at me but the muttering in the crowd got louder as they parted the way for Selena to walk toward me. I could see the surprise in her eyes because she definitely wasn’t expecting me to announce her like that in front of everyone at Caius’s coronation.I climbed down the stairs to meet her half-way and then I took her hand in mine with a huge smile on my face. We walked back up to the podium together and I noticed the eye contact between her and Caius before she averted her eyes. We turned to face the crowd and she kept her eyes on the ground. "Keep your head up,Selena," I whispered. "As long as I am standing next to you, no one is going to ta
