The manila folder sitting on Ezekiel’s desk might have looked thin, but what was inside was substantial. He found himself staring at a high-res photo fixed to the first page. Vespera Nightingale.

The woman in that picture had a sharp, alert gaze that felt completely unfamiliar.

"She’s a strategist," Logan broke the silence, clearly eager to share. "Born in Zurich, raised in London. She got her Master's in Mathematical Statistics from Oxford. Before Jerry Gray brought her on for the lead role in The Darkness Behind Me, she was a senior consultant for a global logistics company. Her experience is rooted in data and logic, not performance."

Ezekiel flipped to the next page, finding her passport scan. "So she’s only been in the country for forty-eight hours?"

"Exactly. There’s no record of her being in City F until this week," Logan confirmed. "She’s like a blank slate to the industry. She has no drama school background, no local connections, no history to speak of."

Ezekiel leaned back in his chair, his thoughts racing. Lorna had always been the ‘dull’ twin, always soft-spoken, dependent, struggling academically.

She wouldn’t have lasted a day in an Oxford lecture hall, let alone in a corporate boardroom in London. This woman seemed to be a high-functioning professional.

"So, it’s just a resemblance," Ezekiel murmured, though deep down, he felt it was a lie.

"It is a striking resemblance, sir," Logan replied. "But the reality is clear. Vespera Nightingale has a whole life documented over in Europe. She isn’t Lorna Astor."

Later that day, the studio buzzed with energy as they kicked off the first official rehearsal.

Katy Sterling was already in position. She was the seasoned pro, the “Queen” of the screen, and she wasn’t about to give that title up.

"Alright, everyone!" Jerry called out, signaling for quiet. "We’re diving into the confrontation scene. Vespera, you’re the lead, you’ve got the evidence of the fraud. Katy, you’re the sister trying to bury that evidence. Let’s see how that plays out."

Katy didn’t hold back. She leveraged her seniority, invading Vespera’s space, her voice rising in a dramatic crescendo of manipulation and gaslighting. She expected the newcomer to falter, to trip over her words.

But Vespera stood her ground. She didn’t try to shout back at Katy. Instead, she waited for the noise to die down, and when she finally spoke, her voice hit with a cold precision.

"You’re making quite a bit of noise, sister," Vespera said, her tone devoid of any unnecessary emotion. "But yelling won’t change the fact that the numbers are clear. I’ve already moved the pieces. You’re just waiting for the checkmate."

The room fell silent. This wasn’t the dramatic acting Katy was used to; it was more of a display of pure power.

"Brilliant!" Jerry shouted, clapping his hands. "Now that’s the lead! That’s the cold, calculating Sammie we need!"

Katy felt a twinge of genuine annoyance. She’d just been upstaged by a woman who probably hasn't stepped foot in a rehearsal room before.

The session broke for a late lunch. As Vespera packed up her things, the door swung open, and Lynn Astor walked in to meet Katy.

Lynn halted in her tracks.

She had seen Vespera at the gala, but seeing her here, in the middle of rehearsal, commanding everyone’s attention, it sent a chill through her. The way Vespera tilted her head sent shivers down Lynn's spine,

Vespera looked up as Lynn approached. There was no flash of recognition, no hint of a twin connection. She regarded Lynn with a polite but distant expression, as if she were merely a stranger in her path.

"Excuse me," Vespera said softly, her accent refined. She sidestepped Lynn with a professional nod, her attention swiftly returning to her phone.

Lynn turned to Katy, her voice quivering a bit. "That’s her?" Her voice trembling quite a bit as if to let go of the uneasiness curling at her chest. “Vespera Nightingale?

Katy adjusted her sunglasses, her face a mask of disdain. "Yep, that’s her. She’s got zero respect for her seniors. Don't just stare, Lynn. It’s just a face."

Lynn watched as Vespera walked toward the exit. It shouldn’t be possible, she thought. Lorna was dead. Her car had gone off the bridge three years ago, and while the body was never found, no one could survived that fall.

Vespera wasn’t Lorna. Nothing could bring Lorna back.

...

The hallway was dimly lit as Ezekiel stepped out of the elevator, his head swirling with various thoughts running through his mind. Most of his thoughts were about the file Logan had shown him.

He had vowed to steer clear of her, to keep the space between their apartments as a solid barrier. He would stay away from her, he has to.

But when he rounded the corner, he found Vespera sitting on the floor, her back resting against her own door.

She gave him a small, calm nod and stayed put, seemingly unfazed by the cold floor beneath her.

Ezekiel froze, his key card hovering near the sensor of his door. The silence stretched on until the guilt from the gala nudged him to break it.

"I haven't apologized for how I acted at the gala. I apologize for grabbing you unnecessarily," he said, his voice a bit stiff. "If my being here makes you uncomfortable, I can find another place to stay."

Vespera looked up at him, her expression cool. "All that anger faded this morning. It’s no big deal; I forgot about it."

She had already talked to Jerry earlier. He had mentioned something, albeit vaguely, about "Lorna" being the name of Ezekiel's late fiancée. Now, it clicked; she just reminded him of someone who was gone.

Although Jerry didn't know much and hadn't explained much, Vespera felt all her anger dissipate when she heard the story.

Ezekiel turned to open his door, ready to wrap up the conversation, when her voice halted him.

"Aren't you even going to ask why I'm sitting out here? You’re not even making an effort to be friendly like good neighbors?"

Ezekiel’s hand paused on the handle as he glanced back at her.

"My electronic lock jammed," Vespera said, sounding matter-of-fact. "I just got into the city, so I don't have anyone to crash with. Jerry’s away, it’s too late to find a hotel, and the repair guy won’t come until tomorrow morning. It’s freezing out here."

She looked at him then, her eyes catching the dim light in the hallway. For a brief moment, that familiar look hit Ezekiel like a punch to the gut. His heart stopped, and before he could think it through, his door clicked open.

"Would you stay tonight?"

The words slipped out before he could catch himself. He froze, the invitation sounding bizarre even to him. "No, I didn’t mean—"

But Vespera had already leapt up, slipping past him into the warmth of his apartment.

"Thanks, Mr. Sterling," she said casually, leaving Ezekiel standing in the doorway, questioning why he had just welcomed a stranger into his personal space.

“Lorna again?”At the mere utterance of the name, Vespera’s expression turned distant, dimming as if processing a tedious solicitude. There was no indication of guilt on her face; instead, she looked worn out, like someone dealing with a relentless, unwanted salesperson. She turned her head just a fraction, meeting the steady gaze of the man watching her intently.“Seriously, Mr. Sterling?”Logan glanced between the two of them, surprise flitting across his face. The silence in the hallway was almost suffocating. “Do you... know each other?”Ezekiel didn’t respond. He couldn’t. His throat felt like it was lined with dry glass. Vespera didn’t wait for him to speak; she bent down and grabbed one of the shopping bags sitting outside her door. As she stood back up, her eyes locked onto Ezekiel’s with a look of mild, clinical disdain.“Common courtesy would suggest you apologize for your behavior yesterday,” she said, her voice smooth and lacking hidden meanings. “I get that you might’ve

“I’m really glad you picked me.” In the dream, the sun was always setting, bathing her in a warm, honey-like glow. She seemed delicate yet so strong in his embrace. “Zeke... I love the way your name sounds when I say it like this. I must be special since I’m the only one who calls you this way.” She had leaned closer, her hair carrying a scent of vanilla mixed with sweets. He felt like a protector, a hero, completely unaware that he was just an onlooker to her downfall. “I’m so happy we met. I want to belong to you forever.” She whispered it against his chest, her heartbeat syncing with his. He had promised her everything, not seeing that those very promises would become the burden that pulled her down. But then, everything came crashing down in an instant. The light morphed into an ugly, bruised shade of purple. The trust in her eyes shattered, replaced by a horrifying realization that the man holding her was the same one who would let her go. Tears spilled down her cheeks

The night air was cool, but Ezekiel felt as if he was burning up. He was just inches away from her, the woman who had filled his thoughts for the last three years. “I know it’s you, Lorna.”Vespera reacted instantly, her instinct to protect herself kicking in against someone she barely knew. It wasn’t guilt that made her flinch; it was sheer fear. She stepped back sharply, her heels resounding against the stone.“Lorna?” she echoed, her voice trembling as she stared at him, her eyes wide with alarm, like someone confronted with a danger in a shadowy alley. “I... I don’t know who that is. Mr. Sterling, you need to back off.”But Ezekiel stood his ground, his thoughts racing back to a moment before the accident. It was a private memory, just for him and Lorna. He recalled the small, unique scar on her collarbone, one she had always kept hidden, overlooked by a family that never paid her much mind.If only he could just see that spot, he’d know for sure.“Stop pretending,” he said hoars

  • VESPERA   Vespera Nightingale

The elite social scene was always the same: a sea of artificial smiles, luxurious outfits, and fleeting bonds. It felt like an exhausting cycle of vanity, where finding even one genuine person was as tough as hunting for a diamond in a dump. Everyone mingled, sporting the expressions that looked best for the cameras. For Ezekiel Sterling, there was no need to put on a show. He stood there like an unmovable iceberg, cold, distant, and famously uninterested in the social antics around him. Next to him, a woman clung to his arm, the only person he truly tolerated. She constantly checked his expression, her laughter ringing a bit too loudly as she tried to close the gap between them.“Thanks for picking me up at the airport earlier, Kiel. I thought for sure you’d be swamped with work,” Lynn Astor said, her bright smile fixed on him.Ezekiel glanced down at her, maintaining a neutral expression. “I made time. It’s been a while since you’ve been home,” he replied, his voice steady and fam

Three years later."This is huge news for the entertainment business and a real hit for Unique Smith’s fans. His eyes felt cold and empty, and his lips were drawn into a tight line, as if laughter had vanished from his life entirely. The heavy office door creaked open. His assistant walked in, holding a leather file."Boss, I’ve put together everything for tonight," he began, speaking quietly. "You’ve got the industry event toni
