LOGINThe car pulled up outside the venue at eight o'clock exactly. The building was designed with all clean lines and lit glass, the entrance was flanked by arrangement of barriers and lighting that transformed an arriving crowd into content. The Vine Entertainment showcase drew a specific tier of industry attendance, a kind of even where everyone was there to be seen and had prepared accordingly. Some were there to make new connections while some were there to flaunt the connections they'd made and also to gist. Regardless, what nobody had prepared them for apparently was them. The car door opened and Vespera stepped out first. The cameras that jad been doing their patient, professional work across the arrivals found her immediately. It was like an automatic gravitational thing. After all, she had suddenly seemed to become the star of the night so she waa used to it. But then Ezekiel stepped out behind her and the atmosphere shifted instantly. The paparazzi line adjusted, voices picked
She had been ready for twenty minutes before she allowed herself to look. The mirror in her bedroom was full length, positioned beside the wardrobe where the light from the window caught it correctly in the evening. She bit her lips, clearly pleased with what she was looking at in the mirror. The gown she had decided to go for was a deep burgundy and it was structured at the bodice with a sweetheart neckline that sat cleanly against her collarbone, fitted through the waist, and fell into a skirt with enough movement to be interesting without being dramatic. The fabric had a subtle sheen to it and the back was low fitting more into her shape. Her hair was up, with a soft twist that left a few pieces loose at her jaw and the back of her neck. The makeup was light and precise, enhancing the architecture of her face without announcing itself. She didn't want to drag too much attention to herself. She already had to deal with a lot. She looked at herself for another minute and smiled.
Everyone was present at the sudden meeting in the main production suite on the third floor of the studio building. It had become a familiar space for such things to be held. The cast settled in with their coffees and their scripts and the low level speculation that ran through any production meeting that hadn't been precedes by an agenda. Vespera took her usual seat and listened to all the guesses. Jerry came in at three minutes past ten. He set this folder on the table, looked around at the assembled faces and smiled. "Good morning, everyone. I won't waste anyone's time and just get straight to what this is about. We are making a cast addition. The network came back to us on the supporting role in episodes seven through ten which is the younger sister arc. We've been running with the role underwritten, as you know, and they want it filled properly." He glanced at the folder again and then back up. "We have someone coming in. She will be reading with Vespera this week and if th
Katy found Lynn in the corridor outside the production wing. She almost walked past her but her horrible state made her pay attention to notice it was even her. She stopped and looked at Lynn from the gown to the hair to the face and back to the gown. "What...the...hell...hapoened to you?"Lynn straightened from the wall. The movement had a dignity to it that the appearance unfortunately did not support. "There was an issue with a tap in the bathroom." "A tap?" "Yeah. The water came out sideways. I supposed it was a fault with the fitting." Katy stared at her. "That's ridiculous. You look like you were pushed into a fountain." "I am aware of how I look, Katy." "I have people waiting." Katy's voice dropped into the register it went to when she was angry and had decided to be precise about it rather than loud. "Do you understand that? I called in a favour to get you in front of Michael Ardenne and his casting director this afternoon. Michael Ardenne, Lynn, who has
Vespera exhaled in relief after the final cut had been announced. The scene wrapped at half past two. It had been a good shoot. There was no trouble and also certainly, no trouble with Katy. Jerry had called cut on the final scene with the specific satisfaction of a man who was ahead of schedule and intended to enjoy it. "Good job, my darling." Jerry blew her a kiss, causing her to smile. Vespera came off set in high energy, proud that things had gone the way they were supposed to go. Anne fell into step beside her immediately with her tablet up and her mouth gushing out information like a running tap.. "You have a fitting at four which we can push if the shoot had run over but since it hasn't, we should keep it." She scrolled. "Jerry wants a brief cast alignment meeting tomorrow morning before the next table read. He insisted that it should be by nine o'clock at his production office." "And..." Anne paused intentionally and when Vespera glanced at her, she noticed the sm
Ezekiel arrived at the office at seven fifty-three. This was not unusual. What was unusual was that he had been awake since four and had spent the intervening hours doing the specific kind of non-sleeping that involved lying in the dark with his eyes open and his mind running calculations he hadn't even asked it to run. He had not resolved anything by morning. He just simply waited for it to be late enough to justify getting up. Philip was already at his desk outside the main office when Ezekiel came through. Philip Reeves had been hus executive assistant for four years and had already known the nature of his boss and the work he was employed to do. He stood as Ezekiel approached, with a tablet in his hand as he briskly went through the morning brief before Ezekiel had fully sat down. "Eight thirty is the infrastructure review with the acquisitions team. It should run about ninety minutes." Philip fell into step beside him as they moved into the office. "Eleven o'clock is the c
The empty field on the outskirts of the city was cloaked in darkness, with only the glow from the car lights breaking the darkness. The silence here felt like a deep contrast to the chaotic screams of the mob they had just fled from.Vespera perched on the edge of the open trunk, her face pale in
Jumping into the entertainment world as a total nobody was never going to be an easy ride. For Vespera, being discovered by Jerry Gray and getting cast as the lead in a big-budget show like The Darkness Behind Me was like a mathematical oddity in the eyes of the public. Yet for her, it was just an
Ezekiel stood in the middle of his bedroom, feeling the silence in the apartment weigh on him more than usual. He’d expected to spend the whole night tossing and turning, his thoughts racing about the fact that a woman with the same face as his late fiancée was just a few metres away from his room
The manila folder sitting on Ezekiel’s desk might have looked thin, but what was inside was substantial. He found himself staring at a high-res photo fixed to the first page. Vespera Nightingale. The woman in that picture had a sharp, alert gaze that felt completely unfamiliar."She’s a strategist
