All those times when they needed him. He wasn’t there.
And to think, he may have been enjoying his time with that woman’s family instead of taking care of her and her then-dying mother.
It was as if she tasted bile in her mouth and her heart being squeezed at this moment.
She had believed that her father had to try his best and work hard so he could continue to pay for her mother’s medical bills and to send her to school too.
She had been so understanding of their circumstances, that even with her own little salary from her part-time jobs, she would even contribute to help her father. So his burden would ease a little and he would have time to visit her mother more often.
She and her father are all what her mother had.
Hera thought that it would make Helayna happy to see them together.
But here he was, already with a new woman and her children are already calling him ‘Dad’.
‘Since when? Are those kids so accepting that they would call him Dad so quickly? It has only been a month since mom died.’
At this time, Hera believed that Leonard started seeing the woman, Rebekah Webb after Helayna died.
She’s already almost fifteen years old after all. Even those younger than her already know about relationships, though could not understand it in depth as much as adults do.
Hera thought that after her mother died, her father found a woman as he was grieving the loss of his mother. And perhaps, the idea of her already having her own children meant Hera would have instant siblings. And she wouldn’t be alone. That it would fill up the void and more in the family.
‘But I don’t need this to feel okay!’ She thought.
She remembered what her mother had said while she was still in the hospital.
She had said that if her time would come, that Hera should keep herself safe and summon her strength every time she feels down. That her mother would always be in her heart no matter what, that she’s never truly alone since she’ll be watching from above.
She also mentioned that if a time came after she’s gone that her father would meet someone to fall in love with, that she would respect his decision and be open-minded with it. To not close her doors to others.
Hera had told her mother that time that her father would always have her mother in his heart. That he would never replace her and find another woman.
But Helayna told her that she would not be hurt if he ever meets someone new after she’s gone. That she would want him to be happy.
They would still have a long life ahead, they couldn’t keep wallowing in misery all their lives.
‘Live fully and be happy.’ That’s what Helayna said to her the night before she died.
Hera recalled her mother’s words, her heart ached at the thought.
‘If mom could see this, would she still be happy for him? It’s too soon.. Can’t he at least wait a year? And they’re even moving in with us already?’
She was already devastated at the thought of selling this house where she had made memories with her mother. But to think that instead of losing this house, strangers would come in and call themselves her new family?
Hera’s head was aching as tears continued to stream down her face. Her nose started to get all clogged up.
Her father didn’t even give her a heads-up of this happening.
It’s simply unimaginable.
“It's almost noon, let me check if she’s already up.” Leonard could be heard talking to Rebekah outside Hera’s door.
“Okay. I’ll order some food then so it gets here on time for lunch.” She said to him.
“Sure, Hon.” Leonard said.
Hera could even hear the smacking sound of the two adults kissing outside her door.
Shivers ran down her spine.
It had been a long time since the last time she even saw her father kiss her mother on the lips. Not even heard him through the door like this.
She realized just now that her father had not called Helayna using an endearment.
There was a time when they used to call each other Love.
But Hera couldn’t recall anymore since when they stopped.
Leonard would call Helayna by her name instead while Helayna still called him Love.
Now that she thought about it, back then, the two would say ‘I love you’ to each other.
But during these years, she had not heard it as often or that Helayna would say it first and instead of Leonard’s reply of ‘I love you too’, he would say ‘Same’ or ‘Me too’ and even just a nod as a reply.
Hera heard footsteps get closer.
She scrambled up from the floor and jumped into her bed, wrapping herself with the blanket, covering her face so only the top of her head could be seen.
Just enough for Leonard to know that she was in her room but that she’s still asleep.
She couldn’t pretend to snore just to say she was sleeping. She never snored loudly.
So she could only steady her breathing.
Leonard knocked on her door but received no answer.
Seeing as the door was locked, he knocked again.
Still no answer.
Alarm bells blared inside his head.
‘She better not.’ His eyes widened.
He quickly took out the spare key from his pocket and unlocked the door.
There, he saw her sleeping.
He sighed heavily.
He thought that Hera would act irrationally and suddenly commit suicide out of depression from losing her mother.
It would certainly traumatize him to see his daughter’s dead body.
And it would also traumatize the children who were excited to be in their new home.
Rebekah might even insist on quickly selling this house for having gone through so much bad luck.
Leonard couldn’t deal with that. He had already spent so much money on Helayna when she was still alive. He thought that he could finally relax now that he won’t have to pay for two separate houses.
But if they would have to buy a new one and move out so quickly, and even to pay for another funeral, it would certainly be too much for him.
And well, he would also need to grieve for his daughter.
It would also be such a loss to lose a daughter so smart and outstanding.
He had even told Leon and Rica that Hera could help them with their homeworks. They would be like Hera, getting such high grades at school and be part of the honor roll.
Rebekah had even agreed with him that this was a good idea.
That is why Leonard thought that Hera and Rica sharing a room is a good arrangement so the two could bond as sisters and Hera could check on Rica’s school work as well.
“Hera. It’s almost noon. You should get up now..” No answer.
Leonard moved forward.
Hera’s heart thumped hard.
For some reason, the thought of her father nudging her to wake her up suddenly alarmed her.
She moved slightly, exposing her face.
Her shut eyes slowly opened as if she had just woken up.
“Dad?” She said in a hoarse voice.
“Ah.. good that you’re up. Come on. Go get cleaned up. Lunch will be here soon. And I need you to meet some people.” His smile even shook.
Hera had wanted to pretend she didn’t know what he was talking about and pretend to be curious.
But she just couldn’t make herself act at this moment.
It’s already hard to keep looking at her father like this without screaming out in frustration and disappointment.
So she just stared at him blankly.
Leonard cleared his throat. “Hera.”
She blinked up at him.“It’s time to get up.” He told her.She lowered her eyes and got up from her bed.She then looked at her father directly, waiting for him to be honest with her.“Look, Hera. Since your mother had become sick, I know that you have been feeling alone. With her being in the hospital and me needing to work and sometimes needing to leave for business trips–it has been hard on everyone. And now, when your mother has finally rested in peace, I know that you felt even more lonely. But remember that I’m here. You’re not alone.” Leonard said.Hera listened but somehow his words seemed to escape to her other ear.“You and I are still grieving after losing Helayna. I know that you miss her so much. And believe me, so do I. But this can’t go on. Your mother had been suffering all these years, in fact, we should be relieved that she’s finally able to rest and be free from pain. We have to keep going and just hold her in our hearts. She wouldn’t want to see you locking yoursel
Leonard began to explain his situation, saying that he met his wife when he was still young and got married to her. This part was true. He was 23 years old when he married Helayna Selene Bardin who was 22 years old at that time. They met in College, fell in love and followed the next logical step to them at that time, to get married. Both of them didn’t have any close family members so they were eager to start a family of their own.So they supported each other in their careers to save for their future children.Leonard graduated Business Administration while Helayna graduated Nursing a year later which is their fourth year in marriage.Life was sweet for Leonard. He had a wife who understood him, supported him and cared for his needs.Helayna settled into the role of a wife while still pursuing her career. Both of them were making enough money. They were able to buy a house together though not so luxurious. It was enough–rather, they could already provide for a child. But Helayna ha
Hera stepped out from her bedroom, closing the door behind her. Leonard turned to the sound. “Ah.. good.. Come here, Hera..” Ding-dong! Hera glanced at the door. She walked towards it rather than joining the family immediately. She opened the door and faced a young man, slightly older than her, wearing casual clothes and carrying a big red bag. “Delivery for Leonard Lewis.” He said, handing her two big paper bags full of dishes in plastic containers. Hera received it. “Thanks.” “Sure. Have a good day.” The delivery guy said, his cheeks showing a faint blush, his eyes unable to look at her straight. “You too.” Hera nodded, closing the door. Hera walked back inside with the paper bags, heading directly to the dining room and setting the paper bags down. “Hera–” Leonard uttered. It was obvious to him that his daughter didn’t welcome this change in the house. Rebekah stood awkwardly to the side as she looked at Hera this close in person for the first time. Back then, Leonard ha
Rebekah never expected that Hera would have a sharp tongue. She had only based her opinion on what Leonard had told her about the mother and daughter. Now that she finally met Hera, bitter feelings arose inside her. Especially now when this teenage girl would actually treat her this way. She’s the elder, she’s supposed to be respected. Even if Hera has complaints, she has to hold her tongue. She’s her father’s new wife, and for that Hera needs to respect her as the new matriarch of this house. Hera has to follow her rules from now on. If anything, Hera has to suck up to her so she won’t make it too difficult for Hera from this day forward. She never expected for Hera to talk back and do so without needing to throw a tantrum. Her words sounded polite but directly struck a blow to their egoes, especially to Rebekah’s. She had wanted to seem motherly but Hera was not having it. Rebekah thought that she was just acting spoiled but then Hera’s words made her realize that Hera was
When the sandstorm had subsided, Hera felt that it had been a long time. She was losing too much blood already. Her mind couldn’t think anymore. Her eyes just remained shut. Her will to live was still there but her body was showing the opposite. It was only waiting for her to sigh her last breath. At a distance, a black truck was driving on the hot desert.“What’s that? A dead animal?” A man with a burly figure said in his gruff voice. He combed his wavy red hair off his face to get a better view. His olive skin however seemed to belong to this environment. But he still looked awkward next to the younger man beside him.The younger man seemed to be in his late twenties. While the burly man seemed to be in his thirties. The younger man wore a white dress shirt, beige pants and brown shoes making him look all clean and fresh even as they were out in the desert. His pale white skin was quite rare in this climate. He looked occupied, reading the documents in his hands as they traveled in
It was during the ceremony, when her guesses were finally confirmed.Leonard had been with Rebekah for a long time. After the wedding, Hera was left to watch Leon and Rica.Rebekah however had asked her mother to stay over and watch them. Then, she saw a letter from school addressed to Leonard Lewis Jr.She only suspected it before. Leon looked so much alike Leonard except for their hair color. Still, she brushed it off as coincidence. But after seeing the letter, she had finally confirmed that Leon was indeed Leonard’s son. And then she remembered Leonard’s words to Rebekah when they exchanged vows. They revealed that they have loved each other for twelve years.Hera was sick to her stomach when she recalled it. So she had finally decided to be on her own.Leonard and Rebekah didn’t know that Hera took this chance to gather all of her documents other than the ones Leonard only gave her.Hera did indeed apply for scholarships but she also applied for something else. She had received s
Hera practically begged Leonard to let her keep the computer in her bedroom, but for the sake of maintaining peace inside the house, Leonard still hauled the computer parts and placed it in a corner in the living room.“You can still use the computer, but supervised.” Leonard told her.“Dad–have you ever talked to my teachers? Did they tell you why they were giving me low scores?” She asked, her eyes telling him to reconsider this decision.“I don’t need to. Your mom has already talked to the teachers. Since they said that you have been getting low scores, and it’s possibly because of your excessive computer use, then that must be it.” He massaged his head and stretched his back. “I don’t need to talk to them, only to be humiliated.”He shot a glare at Hera, the first time that he did so in her life.Hera felt defeated. She watched helplessly as her father asked Leon to start up the computer.“It needs a password.” Leon said.“Hera, type in the password.” Leonard shot her a warning lo
Hera was in shock for a moment upon hearing this. But as she listened, a sudden thought crossed her mind.It was a few days later when she found the chance to talk to Leonard without Rebekah and the two children. She had taken them to the mall at that time with the children’s grandmother.“Dad, can I talk to you?” She asked. He was cleaning his car in their garage at that time.“Now?”“Yes.”“Okay.. What is it?” He lifted his head and picked up a cloth to wipe his hands.“A few days ago, I overheard you talking with Aunt Rebekah.”“Aunt? Can’t you call her mom?”Silence. She avoided his gaze.“Dad, I’m not at that point. And probably will not be for a long time. Please don’t force this. It’s enough that I am respectful and polite to her as your new wife.” She said clearly.Leonard was startled for a moment how Hera had put it. It seemed that his daughter had been thinking about this for a while. “Fine. So–what is it that you want to talk about? The one about the kids needing extra cla
