Chapter 1

Author: Bright Iridium
For five years, Serena and Silas had been married in secret. Though they did everything a married couple did, there was no love involved.

Though, perhaps it was more accurate to say that Serena's love for her husband was hidden without a trace.

On New Year's Eve, the city was covered in a thick blanket of snow, and each household was filled with holiday cheer.

In Southbrook Manor, however, Serena sat there all alone. She had cooked herself a bowl of vegetarian noodles, yet she hadn't even taken a single bite. Her full attention was on a social media post.

In the video attached, a man's hand, elegant and slender, slipped a massive diamond ring onto a woman's delicate ring finger.

As he did, the woman, with a soft and coy tone, said, "I'll be in your care, Mr. Ford."

Serena stared at the watch the man was wearing—a limited-edition global release, a sure sign of his identity.

Bitterness flooded her heart as she replayed the video again and again, as if the act of confirming itself was a form of self-torment.

Half a year ago, the woman in the video added Serena on social media. From then on, she continued to see her husband appearing in the woman's posts.

Ironically, after five years of marriage, the woman's social media was the first time Serena saw her husband being gentle, romantic, and attentive.

The noodles, steaming mere moments ago, went cold completely. Serena tried lifting her chopsticks to eat, yet it seemed all the strength had been sapped from her fingers.

Just like her doomed marriage, she couldn't stir the noodles any longer.

Serena closed her eyes as the tears fell. She stood, washed up, turned off the lights, and lay down in bed.

Later in the night, the silence of the bedroom was broken by the familiar sound of rustling clothes.

On the bed, Serena was lying on her side. She knew Silas had returned, but she continued acting as if she were asleep.

After a few moments, she felt the bed sink from a weight beside her. A tall figure pressed onto her, making her brows furrow slightly. The next moment, her nightgown was pushed up. A dry, warm hand pressed onto her skin underneath…

With a shudder, Serena's eyes flew open.

The man's chiseled, handsome face was right in front of her, a pair of silver-framed glasses still perched on his nose.

The nightlight was still on, lighting his glasses with a dim, orange glow. Yet, it did nothing to hide the desire in his eyes.

"Why did you come back so suddenly?" Serena asked, her voice naturally soft and delicate.

The man caught sight of her slightly reddened eyes and raised his eyebrows slightly. "What, am I not welcome?"

Meeting his dark pupils, she explained softly, "No, I was just surprised…"

The man's slender fingers caressed her pale cheek lightly, his voice a low, attractive baritone, "Take off my glasses."

Serena frowned slightly. As her cheek was being caressed, she stared at the handsome face that she had been infatuated with for so many years. All she could think of was the video she had seen earlier.

For the first time ever, she turned him down.

"I'm not feeling well."

"Are you on your period?"

"No, just…"

"Then don't kill the mood." He cut her explanation short with a low voice, eyes growing darker.

Serena knew that he had no plans on letting her off the hook.

After all, she had always been the one who compromised in their marriage.

Sourness bloomed in her chest as tears welled up to the surface.

The man took off his glasses, leaving them haphazardly on the bedside table as he reached to grab her slender ankle…

The dim light flickered off, plunging the room into full darkness, heightening every sense.

After a whole month of not being together, Silas was rough, almost aggressively so. Serena struggled, to no avail, before finally relenting and enduring it through gritted teeth.

Outside, snow fell harder, the wind howling in the night.

She didn't know how long it lasted, soaked completely in sweat. Her lower abdomen ached slightly, a reminder of her period that hadn't arrived for ages.

"Silas, I…"

He, however, was displeased that she was distracted, and became even rougher.

Her voice, barely audible, was swallowed by his dominant kisses.

By the time it was all over, dawn still hadn't come. Serena was dazed with exhaustion, her abdomen dull with pain. It wasn't sharp, but it was impossible to ignore.

When the phone rang, she forced herself to open her eyes. In her blurry vision, she caught sight of the man walking up to the window to pick up the call.

In the deathly silence of the bedroom, she could hear clearly the delicate voice coming from the other end.

Silas, true to fashion, patiently soothed the caller, ignoring his wife lying just inches away.

Soon, the sound of a car echoed from downstairs.

Silas had left.

-

The next morning, the bed beside Serena was empty and cold. She rolled over and touched her stomach, and it wasn't hurting anymore.

Suddenly, her phone rang. It was a call from Silas' mother, Freya.

"Come here right this instant," she ordered, without any room for refusal.

Serena made a soft noise in acknowledgement, and Freya hung up immediately.

Serena was already used to it. In the five years that she had been married to Silas, Freya had never treated her with any respect.

The Fords were an influential family in Northlorn. Even though Serena was born in the Vale family, she was practically abandoned by them.

Her marriage to Silas was one that resulted from a trade.

Five years ago, her mother killed her abusive father in self-defense. Her little brother, grandmother, and the rest of her family testified against her mother, pushing for the death penalty.

The Johnsons, her mother's family, immediately cut ties with her mother after the incident.

Back then, Serena had tried to speak in her mother's defense, only to be targeted by both the Vales and the Johnsons. At the end of her rope, her mentor recommended she seek aid from Silas.

In terms of influence, even the Vales and Johnsons combined weren't powerful enough to even touch the Fords.

In terms of law, Silas had never once lost a case.

In the end, he managed to secure her mother a mere five-year sentence.

In exchange, Serena got married to Silas in secret—as promised.

According to Silas, his adoptive son Shawn had lost his biological parents in an accident. He was close friends with Shawn's father, so he adopted the boy, who was still a baby.

Now, five years had passed, and her mother's release was only a month away.

The marriage had been a clear transaction, and they each got what they needed, so Serena had no complaints.

However, Serena made the worst mistake a woman could make in a loveless marriage fated to end—she fell in love.

Cutting her reverie short, Serena got up to shower. As the water hit her skin, the discomfort in her abdomen returned.

They had always used protection—except one time, a month ago, when he was drunk.

She had taken a pill the very next day, but birth control that was used after the act was never foolproof.

Just to be safe, she stopped by a pharmacy to buy a pregnancy test on her way to the Fords' family estate.

The phone rang three times before it was connected.Serena clutched her phone tightly and began with a tense voice, "Mr—""Mr. Jackman is currently attending to an important guest."Serena was momentarily thrown off."You must be Serena," the man continued arrogantly. "You saw the photos of the crystal Christ figurine, right?"Although Serena had no idea who he was, she figured that anyone answering Leon's phone must be someone he trusted."Yes, I did," Serena answered calmly. "May I know who's speaking on the phone?""Huxley Wright," the man introduced himself proudly. "Mr. Jackman's most brilliant student at the moment."Serena was at a loss for words. That statement felt like a jab."Mr. Jackman figured you would call. He asked me to pass

Dawn's breath hitched, and her face turned pale as her body swayed. Tears were welling up in her innocent-looking eyes.Serena watched Dawn's act while counting silently in her head. 'One, two, three…'As if right on cue, Dawn closed her eyes and collapsed to the floor."Dawn!" Silas rushed forward to scoop her into his arms. He glanced at Serena before turning and striding away.Serena watched them with a blank expression. There wasn't the slightest flicker of emotion left in her.Dawn always had a way of fainting at just the right moment. Only Silas, who was blinded by love, couldn't see through her act.Serena calmly closed the door and took a long, deep breath with her eyes closed."Serena."Hearing her name, Serena opened her eyes and met her mother's teary gaze."Serena, what's going on between you and Silas?" Serena was hurt, but deep down, she knew she couldn't blame her mother.Elaine didn't have much of a mind of her own. She didn't have a clear picture of what was happening and had been overwhelmed by the malicious comments online. Serena understood that it was only natural for her to misunderstand the situation. After comforting her mother, Serena turned around and glanced toward the doorway, where Dawn stood. Then, her eyes shifted coldly to Silas."Silas, the only reason I agreed to clear things up online is because of what you did for me in the past. If I had known things would turn out like this, I'd rather be called an ungrateful person," Serena said flatly.Silas saw something he'd never seen before in her calm expression—an unwavering resolve. She was nothing like the soft-spoken and considerate woman she had been for the past five years.Something in her had changed."I'll take care of the situation online," he said in a low voice. "And don't blame Dawn. She already spok

Silas glanced at Elaine for a few seconds, then spoke in a low voice. "About what's happening online, I—""Silas."Dawn's gentle voice was heard from outside.Silas turned around at the sound. "What are you doing here?" he asked with a slight frown.Dawn was wearing sunglasses and a mask. She gave the hallway a quick glance before replying softly, "I came for a reexamination at the hospital. I ran into Yuvan, and he told me Ms. Vale and Elaine were here."She paused briefly, then added innocently, "I didn't expect to find you here too."Inside the ward, the moment Elaine saw Dawn, she panicked and tried to get out of bed."Mom, you're still hooked up to the IV. You can't get up!" Serena hurriedly stopped her."What are we supposed to do now? Things have blown up online, and now Mrs. Ford has shown up in person!" Elaine grabbed Serena's hand and added, "Serena, apologize to Mrs. Ford now. Tell her you were wrong. Promise her that you'll never have any inappropriate thoughts ab

Serena returned to her ward to change back into her clothes and freshen up before checking on Elaine. When she reached Elaine's ward, she found Margaret waiting outside. The moment Margaret saw her, she quickly stepped forward."Ms. Vale, don't go in just yet.""Why?" Serena asked puzzledly."Your mother's awake, but right now..." Margaret pulled her aside and whispered, "I'll be honest with you—she saw the news online. She thinks you got involved in someone else's relationship. The shock is what made her faint!"Serena was stunned. She was confused for a second, then suddenly realized what Margaret meant. She turned toward Stella. "Stella, give me my phone."Stella knew she couldn't hide it any longer, and could only hand over Serena's phone.Serena unlocked the screen and opened Instagram. Her private messages were flooded, and there were countless hateful comments underneath her clarification post."Jinx." "Sorry, I need to take this," she said and quickly pulled off her gloves. "Margaret? What's wrong... Elaine fainted?"On the operating table, Serena's eyes snapped open. "What happened to my mom?" she asked anxiously."Elaine fainted. Margaret tried calling you several times but couldn't get through, so she called me. Don't worry, she already called an ambulance. They're on their way to the hospital."Without hesitation, Serena climbed off the operating table. "Forget about the surgery for now. I have to make sure my mom is okay first."-Elaine was unconscious when she arrived at the hospital. There had been a flu outbreak recently, and the emergency department was short-staffed. The supposed relative continued to spill even more shocking claims. They said that when Serena was born, a fortune-teller predicted she was a jinx, destined to bring death to those closest to her! They posted, "The Vales sent Serena to the countryside when she was just one year old, and didn't bring her back until she turned eighteen. Within just four years, her father was dead because of her. Thankfully, the Vales have now completely cut ties with Serena and her mother. If we hadn't, who knows how many more people in our family would have died because of her!"The online community was shocked. Most wealthy families were deeply superstitious. In Constyria, metaphysics was practically ingrained in every person's blood.Because of that, the online community believed the story instantly.Besides that, Dawn's fans took things a step further. They openly condemned and cursed Serena. They believed Serena had set her sights on Silas. In terms of background, looks, and ability, Silas

"Serena," Silas sounded anxious when Serena didn't respond to him. "As compensation, I'll add another fifteen million to the agreement, you—""No, thank you," Serena cut him off and wiped the tears from her face. "There's no need to change the agreement. I'll help you clear things up."Serena was utterly disappointed. At this point, all she wanted was to break free from this marriage and stay as far away from Silas and Dawn as possible. She was done being the clown in their relationship. On the other end of the line, Silas paused briefly before offering, "If you want, you can ask for something else.""Aside from a swift divorce, I want nothing from you," Serena said coldly, and ended the call. Then, she opened Instagram with trembling fingers. Even Instagram hadn't spared her—the first post pushed to her feed was from Dawn. She clicked on the post. When Serena got home, it was already past four in the evening. The live-in housekeeper, Margaret, had arrived around noon. Margaret was from Andaglas, about the same age as Elaine. She had a straightforward personality and worked very efficiently. On top of that, she was an excellent cook. Elaine was very satisfied with Margaret being their housekeeper. That evening, Margaret prepared dinner. Since Elaine had nothing else to do, she decided to help out in the kitchen and learn cooking from Margaret. Although Elaine could cook, she only knew how to cook a few basic dishes. She had always been attended by servants, after all. She was a wealthy heiress and had married into the Vales—an appropriate match in terms of social status at the time. Serena couldn't bear to see her mother having to do everything by herself after enduring five years of suffering in prison. Now that she had the means, she was determined to give her mother the best life possible.Their current residence
