Chapter 1

Author: Ethereal Selene
I stood beneath the old locust tree that hadn’t changed in ten years, five cold metal boxes cradled in my hands.

I felt like a complete joke.

A gust of wind swept past, stirring a few fallen leaves and chilling me to the bone.

Turns out, in some corner I knew nothing about, another woman’s turmoil had been buried all along.

And my fiancé’s unspoken regret.

His greatest regret was that he couldn’t give her a wedding.

What about me?

What does our wedding, set for the day after tomorrow, even mean now?

A grand lie? Or a belated offering to the woman he truly cared about?

I reburied the three boxes that had nothing to do with me and took only the two that belonged to Ethan and me.

By the time I got home, the sky was pitch-black.

The lights in the living room were on. Ethan sat on the sofa, and the moment I walked in, he shot to his feet.

“Why are you back so late? Where did you go?”

I changed my shoes and answered calmly, “I went back to our old school.”

“Our high school?”

He froze for a split second before forcing himself to appear composed.

“What were you doing there? You didn’t even ask me to come along.”

“Nothing much. I was just passing by, so I went in to see a teacher.”

Relief washed over his face. He walked up and wrapped his arms around me from behind, his chin resting in the crook of my shoulder, his voice soft as water.

“You scared me. I thought you ran off. The wedding’s in two days. You can’t just disappear like that.”

I let him hold me.

Silence spread through the room, thick and suffocating.

After a long moment, I asked quietly,

“Ethan, do you really want to marry me?”

His body stiffened for a moment before his arms tightened around me.

“Of course. It’s been ten years. Who else could I marry but you?

“Autumn, what are you even thinking about?”

Right. Ten years.

Yet the words on the metal box kept appearing in my mind, uncontrollably.

“The greatest regret of my life is that I can’t give you a wedding.”

He let go of me, brimming with excitement as he discussed the details of tomorrow’s wedding rehearsal.

He mimicked the priest reciting the vows.

“For richer or poorer… in sickness and in health…

“To take Miss Autumn Taylor as your wife…

“To be married to…”

But every single word felt like a needle piercing my chest.

“Do you like this bouquet? Or would you prefer white roses instead?”

He held up his phone, eyes full of anticipation as he looked at me.

A surge of unnamed anger flared up from deep within me, scorching all sense of reason.

“Whatever.”

I turned my head away, my tone icy.

“Do whatever you want. I don’t care.”

The smile on Ethan’s face froze.

“Autumn, what do you mean? How can you say you don’t care? This is our wedding!”

“Our wedding?”

I let out a bitter laugh and couldn’t help but look back at him.

“Is it really ours?”

He froze at my question for a moment, then furrowed his brows.

“What is wrong with you today? You’ve been acting weird ever since you got back.

“I’ve been running around taking care of everything for our wedding, and this is the attitude?”

“My attitude?” I felt a tightness in my chest.

“And you? Is that your attitude…?”

I stopped mid-sentence, almost spilling everything. I was afraid I’d regret saying it.

Ethan’s eyes reddened as he snapped,

“What attitude? Haven’t I been busy preparing for our wedding all this time?

“Autumn, are you crazy? If you don’t want to get married, then just don’t!”

He spun around and slammed the door, the sound shaking the entire house.

I stood alone in the empty living room, tears falling from my eyes without warning.

I hung up the phone, and the green light ahead made the road feel wide open, lifting my mood along with it.Those rotten people and rotten events were all behind me.My life now held far more important people—and far more beautiful sights.Lea and Joe’s engagement party was warm and romantic.I watched as Jeo got down on one knee and slipped the ring onto Lea's finger, genuinely happy for them.Halfway through the reception, I stepped out onto the terrace for some fresh air.The evening breeze blew gently, chasing away the remnants of wine.Joe handed me a glass of juice and stood beside me as we looked down at the bustling city streets.“Thank you, Autumn,” he said suddenly.“For what?” I asked, slightly puzzled.“For what you planned back then,” he said with a smile.I froze for a moment.Back when I had been planning my wedding with Ethan, I had only asked Joe and Lea to help. I never imagined fate would quietly use it to bring them together.“You two ended up together because you

I pointed at their intertwined hands in surprise.Lea gave me an embarrassed grin. “Well… we’re together now.”“And honestly, we should thank you. If you hadn’t dragged me into helping you back then, Joe and I wouldn’t have had the chance to spend real time together.”Joe scratched the back of his head.“Funny how things work out. You go in circles your whole life, only to realize the right person was beside you the entire time.”I was genuinely happy for them.A year later, my studio had made a name for itself in the industry, and we landed a major international collaboration. At the celebration party, I unexpectedly spotted a familiar figure in the crowd. It was Sean Casey—Joe’s business partner and our old high school classmate. He raised his glass at me, a hint of nostalgia in his eyes.“Autumn, you’re glowing these days. It took me a moment to even recognize you.”I smiled. “You flatter me, Sean.”We exchanged a few pleasantries before his tone shifted.“By the way, Ethan…“Not lo

The moment my words fell, the entire hall erupted.Everyone realized it had all been my plan.I walked over to my parents and took a deep bow.“Dad, Mom, I’m sorry for worrying you and for bringing shame upon you.”My mother’s tears were already streaming down her face as she ran to hug me.“Poor child, you’ve suffered enough. It’s not your fault, not your fault at all!”My father patted my shoulder, his eyes full of both worry and anger. He turned to the ashen-faced Shaw parents.“Mr. and Mrs. Shaw, your family must give our family an explanation for what happened today!”Mr. and Mrs. Shaw looked miserable, unable to utter a single word.Ethan snapped out of his shock, finally understanding everything.“Autumn, why…why are you doing this? Why go this far?”“Why? Isn’t it all thanks to you?” I met his gaze, my eyes filled with nothing but contempt.“Ethan Shaw, you’ve been enjoying all the advantages and spotlight I’ve given you, while still clinging to your first love.“You ask why I

Rose’s smile froze at once, disbelief washing over her as she stared at Ethan.“Ethan… w-what did you just say?”Ethan didn’t look at her. He turned and bolted down from the altar.“Where’s Autumn? Where is she?”Left alone on the altar, Rose became the biggest joke in the room. She collapsed to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably, her cries tearing at the air.Lea slammed her palm on the table, clearly fired up. “Beautiful! That scumbag finally used his brain for once!”I only gave a faint smile. The show was far from over.I took out my phone and hit send. The next second, the LED screen in the church—originally playing romantic music—went dark. Then a photo appeared. The one Rose had sent me: she and Ethan in the hotel bed before the wedding.Next came every line I’d photographed from the two time capsules Ethan and Rose buried together. The crowd erupted.“Oh my god! So the groom cheated before the wedding? And the mistress is the one wearing the dress?”“This isn’t a stand-in bride

The wedding day dawned bright and sunny. The guests were almost all seated, and melodious music floated through the air. When the time arrived, the ceremony began.Ethan, flanked by his groomsmen, walked up the aisle to the altar. He stood beside the priest, his eyes full of anticipation, staring at the entrance of the church. All the guests, including my parents, fixed their attention on that wooden door. The music grew solemn and sacred. The doors slowly swung open.Everyone held their breath. But the person walking in wasn’t me. It was Rose, wearing my wedding dress.A stunned silence swept over the hall.Soon after, a wave of hushed whispers and murmurs rippled through the crowd. My parents shot to their feet in shock.Ethan’s parents were just as stunned, staring at their son on the stage, completely at a loss.As for Ethan himself, the smile on his face froze instantly. He stared at Rose as she walked toward him, step by step, disbelief written all over his face.“Rose? • Wedding Betrayal   Chapter 4

Ethan didn’t come home all night. The next morning, a new contact appeared on my phone—an unfamiliar number. I tapped the profile picture—it was Rose, her gentle, harmless face staring back at me.We barely knew each other. Other than knowing she was Ethan’s female confidante, we had no connection. I had no idea how she got my number, yet for some inexplicable reason, I didn’t block it.Almost the moment I opened the chat, she sent a photo—without a single word.It was taken in a hotel room. Ethan lay on the bed shirtless, fast asleep. Rose wore his white shirt, nestled against him, and flashed a V sign at the camera. Her smile was both triumphant and teasing.Outside the floor-to-ceiling window, daylight poured in. Time, place, and people—it was all painfully obvious.Looking at the photo, my heart froze and shattered into countless pieces. Yesterday he was at the bar; this morning, he was already in the hotel. Seamless.I turned off my phone, expressionless, and walked into t
