Sara sipped her coffee as she stood in the cabin doorway, looking up at the night sky. The storm system had finally passed, and the stars were shining brightly. Sara felt a calm contentment she had not experienced since the first night of her excursion. She had not realized how on edge the storms had left her.

“Ted, are you going to be glad when I’m gone?” she asked into the darkness.

A snort and the rustling of leaves came from the side of the cabin. The buck stepped out of the darkness, fr

One year after Sara Walker had discovered the cabin built by Herschel Allen and the grave of Jim Smith, she stood with her husband Kevin outside the little log structure that had sheltered her when she had needed it most. They had been back to the cabin and grave several times since the discovery, and with each time, Sara felt a sense of reverence for it. This time was no different. “I still can’t believe you found this place the way you did,” Kevin told Sara as she pushed the door open. Sara smiled and replied, “I know exactly what you mean. If I had not experienced it for myself, I would never believe it if someone told me it happened to them.” As they walked inside, Kevin asked, “You really feel like they are here in this cabin, don’t you?” “No,” Sara answered. “I feel like Herschel is here. Jim had no way of knowing what was in that journal. It got thrown at me twice while I was here. Like someone was telling me to read it. Herschel wanted me to know his story and about his f

“Is Sara okay?” Steve asked Kevin. “I can honestly say, I don’t know. I’m worried about her. I can tell you that,” Kevin replied. “Do we need to go find her?” Steve asked, clearly concerned. “No, she said she is off-trail and only about ten to fifteen minutes away from the parking lot,” Kevin said. “Good, good,” Steve said with relief in his voice. “Well, in that case, I am going to sit down and wait for her. Why don’t you sit down too?” “No, I’m good,” Kevin said as he continued the pacing he had started as soon as he had called Sara. “Kevin,” Steve said gently but assertively. “If you keep pacing, you are going to wear a groove in the forest floor. Sit down.” Kevin stopped in his tracks and looked at Steve. It was the first time he looked closely at the man who was old enough to be a father to him or Sara. Steve sat calmly on a large rock near the trail, with an expression that was a strange mixture of serenity and concern. “How can you be so calm about this?” Kevin demand

Steve pulled his truck into the lot beside Sara’s car and parked. The drive there had taken less time than he and Kevin had anticipated, making them arrive well ahead of the time Sara should be reaching them. Steve glanced over at Kevin, who was checking his phone for messages from Sara. “Any word from Sara?” Steve asked Kevin. Kevin replied, “No. Nothing, and that makes me worry.” “I wouldn’t worry too much yet. From what you told me and where she says she’s at, it could take her a while to hike out. Plus, you said she fell and got hurt, so she might be hiking a little slower than she usually would,” Steve told him, trying to assure him that Sara was fine. “I know, but this whole thing with the cabin and the deer has me on edge,” Kevin said. Steve rubbed his cheek and said, “I’m still confused by that. I have been all over this forest both before and after it became state land. I don’t remember ever coming across anything like you have told me about or like what’s in those pictu

A snort and the rustling of leaves came from the side of the cabin. The buck stepped out of the darkness, frantically shaking his head. He stopped, lowered his head, and looked up at Sara as if to tell her he was sad about her leaving. “I know,” Sara told the deer softly. “I will miss you too. There is something special about you. I can feel it in my gut.” The deer let out a long huff and lay down at the base of a tree near the cabin. He shifted and wiggled a little until he got comfortable and bedded down. He never took his gaze off Sara as he did so. Sara smiled at the deer before looking back u

Sara went to the stove where her rainwater was now boiling. She turned off the gas flame and used her tin coffee cup to measure water into her cooking pot for her macaroni and cheese. She refilled her coffee cup with water before placing both on the table. She dumped the packet of freeze-dried pasta into the pot and stirred it. She sat down and sighed as she poured instant coffee into her cup and swirled it around. With her first sip, she could feel the comforting warmth and the caffeine enter her system.“Oh, that’s better,” Sara said as she poured some of her cold coffee into the cup to cool it a little. She took another drink from the cup and murmured. “That’s even better.”Sara drank her coffee as she waited for her noodles to reconstitute and be edible. She reached over to her cooking pot and stirred it occasionally, each time sampling a small bite to see if it was ready to eat. She was famished after eating mostly trail mix the day before. She was finally content that the macaro

Wendigo Chapter 17--part 1Sara awoke with a start. She looked around frantically, feeling as if someone or something had hit her in the face. She could feel the sensation of where the impact had been on her forehead, just above her eyebrow. When Sara sat up, still in her sleeping bag, she heard something fall to the floor. The journal was lying beside her. She touched the book and felt warm.“Um, does this mean you want me to finish reading this now?” Sara asked, glancing around the cabin. “I promise, I am going to finish reading the journal in the morning. I will not leave here until I have read all of it, and I know what happened to both of you. Can I go back to sleep, gentlemen, please? I promise I am not having any bad dreams. I was actually in the middle of a really nice dream that had my husband in it. So what do you say? Jim? Herschel? Can I go back to sleep? Please?”Sara sat quietly, still in her sleeping bag, waiting for something to happen. She was met with silence. She
