LOGINSally’s POV
I woke up earlier than usual and planned to slip out of the house unnoticed. I rushed through my usual morning routine and slipped my bag over my shoulder. I paused when I reached the end of the stairs because I heard hushed voices coming from the kitchen. My parents. I couldn’t make out everything they were saying, but their voices were low and tense. “I’m just saying we can’t keep doing this.” My father. There was a brief silence before my mother answered, her voice barely above a whisper. “And what exactly do you expect me to do?” I stood there, my fingers tightening around the strap of my bag. “Sally…” Immediately I heard Mother call my name, I backed away. If they hadn’t noticed me yet, I didn’t want to give them a reason to. I looked at the time on my phone… I was early. Too early. But I couldn’t face Mum after what happened yesterday. At least not now. I quietly turned towards the front door. I slipped outside and pulled the door shut as gently as I could. Only when I reached the sidewalk did I finally breathe. **** Psychology and literature was one of my favourite courses. But today felt off. Mr Ben talked about Romeo and Juliet, and everyone had something to say about it. I have always thought it absurd that Juliet, who pretended to die, couldn’t wake up before Romeo killed himself. But if my prince char… “Misses Bennette…” I glanced up from the doodles I had been forming in my note. “You have been awfully quiet today... don’t you have any input?” I shook my head. “No, sir.” A few people chuckled. From somewhere at the back of the class, a guy’s voice rang out. “Maybe Romeo didn’t text her good morning.” The class erupted in laughter. I felt my cheeks burn. Before I could even think of a response, Nora’s voice came from the corner of the room. “Maybe he did. You can only dream of a good morning text. What’s your excuse?” The laughter got louder. The guy went silent. I turned towards Nora, trying not to smile. She gave me a tiny shrug before returning her attention to her notebook like she hadn’t just ended a man’s entire academic career. I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from laughing. Mr Ben cleared his throat. “Alright. Since apparently we’re all comedians today, that would be all for today.” Instantly, chairs scraped against the floor as people made their way out of class. I packed my books and hurried out of the class before Mr Ben would call me to tell me a fragment of his life problems like I wasn’t already battling with mine. “Heyyy.” “Hey Nora.” Nora has been my friend since my first year. She’s smart, funny and a lot more outgoing than me. Her parents don’t lock her up, and she’s been in numerous relationships. “Sooo, you didn’t tell me about the new development… at first, I thought it was Justin, but now Cole.” She sidetracked me with a grin on her face. “You are way badder than I thought.” “Huh? Cole? No ewww. We are just..." I paused. My mind drifted to Cole saying I didn’t need to tell anyone about his grades. “…working on something together.” “Mmhmmm, but that’s not what rumours say.” I froze. “There are rumours?" “Nothing serious; you have been around both brothers more often than not, a lot of hot men everywhere.” I said nothing and continued working. “Speaking of hot men, how is Micheal?" “Micheal? My brother? Hot? Pleaseee, Nora. You are way older than my brother.” “Come on! You don’t actually think I am serious, do you?” I narrowed my eyes on her. “Hey!” Cole. I turned around. Cole stood a few feet away, his hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket. “Excuse me.” Nora raised both hands with a grin. She looked at me. “Don’t be late for tomorrow’s study session.” “I won’t.” She gave Cole one last suspicious look before walking away. Cole rolled his eyes. “Boring.” I frowned. “What?” “Nothing.” That accent again. “You have an appointment with me, remember?” I frowned. “We do?” Cole stared at me. “Yes, Sally. We do.” I quickly pulled my phone out. “I don’t have anything written down.” “Of course you don’t.” I ignored him and pulled out my notebook instead, flipping through the pages. I had written down everything. Classes. Assignments. Study sessions. Meetings. Nothing. I looked up at him. “I would have written it here.” “Do I have to get rid of one of those again?” I narrowed my eyes. “You’re not touching my journal.” He smiled. “We don’t have tutoring today.” I blinked. “Then why did you say we had an appointment?” “Because I’m keeping my end of the deal.” “What deal?” He looked at me like I’d just asked him the most ridiculous question in the world. “The deal where I help you.” I opened my mouth, then closed it. He had a point. “I have somewhere we’re going today.” “Where?” “You’ll see.” I immediately shook my head. “No.” His eyebrows rose. “No?” “I have things planned.” “Of course you do.” He gestured towards the notebook in my hand. “You probably have your next three days planned too.” I ignored that. “I can’t just go somewhere without knowing where I’m going.” He waved his hands in the air. “You can, Sally... it’s called ‘just living'." I sighed. “This is too unplanned.” He stared at me for a moment before shaking his head. “Remember the agreement?” I hesitated. He smiled. “Thought so.” I rolled my eyes. “You’re incredibly annoying.” “And yet you’re still standing here.” I looked towards the hallway. Then back at him. I didn’t like spontaneous things. I liked knowing where I was going, what I was doing, and when I would be home. But this was part of the deal. “Fine.” His smile widened. “Good girl.” I immediately frowned. “Don’t call me that.” “I will call you whatever I want, Sally.” He turned and started walking. "No, you will not!” I said, following behind him. I kept a careful distance between us. There were already enough rumours flying around campus. The last thing I needed was someone seeing me walking too closely besides Cole Ravenscott and deciding there was something going on between us. I wasn’t going to give them anything else to talk about.Sally’s POV. Today was surprisingly a success, and Cold actually listened. I glanced at him as he drove. Eyes fixed on the road as he bobbed his head to the music. He’s actually smarter than he lets on. If only he would just be serious for once. A few minutes later, he pulled up in front of my dorm.I unbuckled my seatbelt and reached for the door.“So…” he said.I looked at him. “So?”He grinned. “Aren’t you going to invite me to your room?” “No…why would I do that?" He chuckled. "Someday, Sally.” I rolled my eyes and stepped out of the car. He winked before putting the car back in drive.“Goodnight, love.”I rolled my eyes.“Goodnight.”His car pulled away, and I turned toward the dorm building.I had barely taken a few steps when a girl walking past me glanced in the direction Cole had disappeared.“Is that your boyfriend?”I stopped.“What?”She giggled. “The guy that just dropped you off.”“Hell no!”She laughed.“Okay, okay.”Then she walked away before I could say anyth
Cole’s POV. “I…” I dried my wet hair lazily with a towel. My eyes moved from her then back to the file on my desk. “Oh shit.” I tossed the towel aside and hurried to the table. “The fuck are you doing snooping around in my room?" I picked up the file and tossed it into my desk drawer. My fingers slipped through my hair. I walked briskly to the door and shut it. I couldn’t risk the other guys listening in on my conversation. “It was open," she muttered. I glanced at her, annoyed. "And that gave you the permission to read it?!” “I am sorry, okay?” I sighed. “You weren’t supposed to see that.” I walked to my wardrobe and slipped on a white shirt. I hadn’t heard her come in, though I had been expecting her. This was the last thing I needed right now. I didn’t look at her. “You’re going to get kicked out?” Great, there she goes. “That’s none of your business.” Silence. “Why didn’t you tell me?” I scoffed. “What news, Cole Raven
Sally’s POV. I frowned. “Mine?” He stared at me blankly. “Yours?” “Yeah.” I smiled, suddenly feeling a little defensive. “Why?” He leaned back in his chair. “You are serious?” “Of course I am." I nudged my glasses back up on my face, studying him. I couldn’t understand why he looked so unsettled.“I’ve been wanting to move into the dorms for a while. Mom finally agreed.”“Your mom agreed?”I nodded.“Well… sort of.”He shook his head slowly.“This has Cole written all over it.”My smile disappeared.“Cole?”“Yeah.”He leaned forward.“Have you been hanging around him again?”I frowned.“Again?”“You know what I mean.”"No, Justin, I don’t… I told you... school project.” He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck.“I’m just saying, Sally. Cole isn’t exactly the person I’d want influencing you.”I stared at him.“Influencing me?”I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.“I wanted to move out. I made the decision.”“I know. I’m not saying you can’t make your own decisions.”“Then
Sally’s POV. We pulled up in front of the dorms. I honestly didn’t think I would get it this late; I had initially applied, and the rooms were completely filled up. I then applied for the students' waitlist, and apparently someone cancelled their housing contract. Yaaay. We took all the boxes out of the car and placed them on the floor. Dad leaned on the car with his hands in his pocket. He hasn’t aged a bit. I could see why Mom chose him. “Mom, Dad... thank you." I clasped my hands together. "We can take it from here.” Moms' face dropped. "You don’t want us to get you settled in?” I flashed a smile. "Don't worry about that; Micheal and Nora would take it from here.” “Oh…I was thinking…" “Let it be Olivia.” Dad finally spoke. An awkward silence settled over us for a moment. "Okayyy... we would be heading in now..." He glanced at Nora and picked up a box. “Nora?” Nora did likewise. “Take care of yourself, honey… and if you need anything… y
MOVE DAY. Sally’s POV. I couldn’t stay put; I looked at the ton of boxes I still hadn’t packed into the car. Micheal poked his head through the door. “Hey Sal, how are you feeling about your move?” I sank into the bed, burying my face in my palms. “I don’t know…what if I don’t like my roommate, or she doesn’t like me?"I inhaled. “What if this is a terrible decision?" “What if my grades go down and I have to come back after I have already gotten accustomed to the dorms!” "Sal...Sally...relax." Micheal walked into the room. "It's all in your head.” He sat beside me and gave my shoulder a squeeze. “You would do just fine; I am here, Nora is here… Justin is here and your new friend Cole.”He grinned. I side-eyed him. “This is you literally leaving your comfort zone, and I am super proud of you!” I sighed and laid my head on the bed, gazing at the ceiling. “What’s a little move, You are bigger than this…I am Sally, and I am going to do just fine.”Micheal punched the air. “T
Sally’s POV. I felt slightly different, like I could take on the world! I didn’t go home with Justin today; after his game, I insisted on taking the bus home. I greeted everyone who looked my way with a wide grin. Today was fun. I couldn’t remember the last time I laughed so hard. I kept replaying the afternoon in my head. The girls. The music. The stupid games. The lake.Even the way Cole had dragged me away from my bag like I was some child who needed supervision. For once, I hadn’t spent the entire day worrying about what time I needed to be home.I hadn’t checked the clock every thirty minutes.I hadn’t wondered if Mom would be angry.I had just… lived.I liked it a little too much. The sky had darkened. I plugged my AirPods in throughout the ride home. It has never been easy for me to make new friends, but today, I met Mitchelle, Amber, and Claris. The bus pulled up at the bus stop, and a little sadness crept up on me. I had to face what I ran away from earlier this morni
Cole’s POV. I sat up quietly on the edge of the bed. My eyelids felt heavy. I was in my room. I must have been very tired yesterday; I can’t remember falling asleep. “Cole” Shit, I forgot. Stella came over last night. As usual. “Stella.” I replied without looking back. She leaned fo
Sally’s POV. I spun around. Cole's arms were folded across his chest. “Ah! I see you've found it." He took a step forward and ripped the paper from Justin's fingers. “I could have sworn I dropped this somewhere?” Justin arched a brow. His jaw tightening, "So, why does it have my name over it
I brightened automatically. Cole’s jaw tightened for half a second, but he looked away before I could be sure. Justin’s voice made my chest tighten. I tried to sound normal, but my hands itched to fidget with my bag strap.” “Hey,” I answered. “Why weren’t you in class?” Justin asked. “I just…
