The night air was damp, wrapping around their sweaty skin in the room. The copper chandelier shone faintly on the cold brick walls, contrasting with the warm sighs of two bodies exploring one another. Rafael stood at the edge of the bed with a dark gaze, his breathing heavy, while Aurora lay beneath him, her blonde hair a mess on the white sheets.

Rafael's shirt was already ragged, open at the chest, displaying the curves of tense muscles. His hand traced Aurora's collarbone, then rose to her jaw, lifting her face to force her to look into his eyes. Aurora held her breath, her body trembling between fear and longing for something she couldn't explain. Rafael approached slowly, kissing her lips with a pressure that was not entirely gentle, as if mixing anger with long-buried desire. The intoxicating kiss burned her nerves.

His strong hands now moved more boldly, trailing down Aurora's body as if marking her, as if demanding her submission. And as their fingers gripped one another, as their breaths combined in a single suppressed sigh, the tension between them culminated in a hanging silence. But just as their union was about to happen, Rafael stopped.

His body was stiff. His hands were now clenched into fists, and his face turned away from Aurora's, staring at the window covered by a thin curtain. Her breathing was ragged, not because of passion but due to another wave of emotion that suddenly choked her chest.

Aurora opened her eyes, her still misty gaze fixed on Rafael in confusion.

"Rafael? Why did you stop?"

Rafael turned his head slowly. His eyes were dark, but no longer filled with desire.

"I..." His voice was hoarse, barely audible. "I can't. Not tonight."

He got up, picked up his shirt that had fallen on the floor, and put it on in silence. Aurora sat up, pulling the blanket over her body, trying to make sense of such a sudden change.

"Did I do something wrong?" she asked softly.

Rafael shook his head. "Not you."

She stared at him for a long time, as if trying to say something that had been held back for too long. But finally, he simply said:

"I just... almost forgot the reason why I approached you."

Then he stepped out of the room, leaving Aurora in a silence that had now transformed into a big question mark.

Two months ago, in his company's office, Rafael stood frozen in front of the projector screen. Financial statement numbers danced in absurd graphs, and everything was wrong. The loopholes wouldn't have been visible to the naked eye, but Rafael was the man who built this system from scratch. He knew when something was faked. And someone had been doing it for months.

"Cross-check all vendor accounts from the last twelve months," Rafael ordered his secretary, Nadine, with a locked jaw.

A few hours later, Rafael saw the shadow account that had been found. It contained gradual transfers, money flowing slowly but surely to a fictitious company later traced to a single name: Edgar Marvelo.

The business partner he had trusted all along, the man in his fifties who stood with him as they cut the ribbon for the new building six months ago. Rafael didn't believe it until he saw the encrypted email recordings and the irrefutable digital signature agreement.

"Why?" muttered Rafael softly, standing in the empty meeting room, looking out at the city slowly wrapped in twilight. "We built this together..."

Before Rafael could prosecute him, Edgar had fled. Disappeared like a coward. Leaving behind his good name, his company, and his only legacy in this city-Aurora Marvelo.

The Marvelo family home stood like an empty palace. The white walls were still clean, the lawn still manicured, but there was no real life inside, only traces of the past left behind. And now, its only heir had returned.

Aurora stood in the center of the spacious living room, looking at the picture of her father hanging on the wall. Edgar's serene smile behind the golden frame was now unfamiliar. She tried to smile, but her heart sank. Too much had changed. Too many unanswered questions.

Since arriving from Paris two days ago, Aurora had never once managed to contact her father. The phone was dead. Emails went unanswered. Aurora didn't understand why her father suddenly cut off the financing for her studies in Paris. In fact, she returned home with little savings left.

"Dad, where are you?" she asked, annoyed.

But that day, she had no time to drown in her own thoughts. Because a moment later, the sound of a car engine could be heard outside. Through the window, she saw a man get out of the car. He was tall, dashing, wearing a dark suit and sunglasses.

Aurora opened the door before the bell could ring.

"Who is it?" she asked warily.

The man took off his glasses slowly. His dark brown eyes instantly locked onto Aurora's face. His gaze was piercing-deep, as if trying to bare her soul.

"Aurora Marvelo?" he asked calmly.

"Yes."

"I'm Rafael Valentino."

Aurora paused. The name was familiar-very familiar. She had heard it in one of her father's phone conversations or perhaps from a business article she had vaguely read. But what she remembered for sure was that Rafael Valentino was no small name.

Rafael was an important man. Someone with power.

From his gaze, Aurora knew he wasn't coming to stay in touch.

"I didn't come for pleasantries," Rafael continued as he stepped in uninvited. "We need to talk. About your father."

Aurora closed the door slowly, letting the man into her house-or rather, her father's house. She followed Rafael into the living room and then sat down opposite him.

"If you know where my father is, please tell me," Aurora finally said. "I've been looking for him for weeks."

Rafael snorted softly, mocking her. "Of course, you wouldn't know."

Aurora gave him a confused look. "What do you mean?"

Rafael leaned back, crossed his legs, and looked at her without a smile. "Your father stole my money. Left me devastated. And he disappeared like a coward. Now, he's left you here in a filthy, lucrative mansion."

Aurora froze. "What do you mean by dirty money?"

"Don't pretend not to know, Aurora." His voice became sharper. "You're a smart woman. But don't be foolish about your father's business. He cheated me. Took millions of dollars from our company merger, forged documents, and ran away. Now, he's left all this to you. Including... the debt."

Aurora rose to her feet, her voice trembling. "I don't know anything about that. I was never involved in my father's business. He rarely even told me!"

"But you are still the heir." Rafael stood up as well, now facing her directly. Only a few inches separated them. "And as a good daughter, you will pay for it."

"With what?" hissed Aurora. "I don't have that kind of money."

Rafael grinned softly, dark and sharp.

"There are many ways to pay. And you'll find out one by one, Aurora Marvelo."

Aurora held her breath, her eyes wide as she looked at Rafael, who was now standing so close. The man's aura was like a storm-cold and unpredictable. But Aurora was not the type of woman who was easily intimidated. Even though her whole body was shivering, she still raised her chin with pride.

"What if I refuse?" she asked, her voice low but clear, like a challenge.

Rafael did not answer immediately. He looked at her for a long time, as if confirming that Aurora really didn't know anything. Then slowly, his smile grew, but it wasn't a friendly smile. It was the smile of a man used to winning at all the dirtiest games.

"You think you have a choice?" replied Rafael, his voice low, almost a whisper but echoing like a boom. He stepped closer until Aurora was almost pushed back.

The damp morning air filled the small inn room. Aurora walked slowly, carrying a basin of warm water she had just fetched from the bathroom, along with a small towel rolled neatly. Her breath came slightly ragged, not from exhaustion, but from the heaviness in her heart as she looked at the little boy on the rickety bed.Renaldo lay weak, his small body wrapped in a thin blanket, his face pale with sweat soaking his forehead. His fever hadn’t gone down despite Aurora and Marissa taking turns through the night pressing wet cloths to his head. Aurora crouched at the bedside, dipping the towel into the basin, wringing it out, and placing it gently on Renaldo’s forehead. But only a moment later, Renaldo’s body began to shake. His lips trembled, his eyes half-closing as his body convulsed uncontrollably. Aurora gasped in shock, while Marissa, who had been sitting nearby, immediately screamed in panic.“Reynaldo! Oh God, he’s having a seizure!” Marissa cried, he

Rafael paced back and forth in his dark living room. The lights were off, only the moonlight streaming through the large window, casting long shadows across the marble floor. His hand still clutched his phone, the screen repeatedly flashing Aurora’s name with failed call status. Her number was dead. Completely unreachable.“Why are you doing this to me, Aurora?” he hissed, his hoarse voice scraping from his throat. His breathing was ragged, his chest thundering with anger he tried to suppress, but failed.Rafael tried dialing the number once more. Silence. Then the dead tone. His eyes narrowed, his jaw tightened. He had never felt this betrayed before. Everything he had done wasn’t enough to keep Aurora by his side.Harshly, he threw his phone onto the sofa, then stepped to the table, grabbing an empty glass and smashing it to the floor. The shards scattered, reflecting the pale glow. His hand reached for a picture frame on the shelf, a portrait of him wit

Aurora and Marissa stopped in front of the wooden door of the modest inn. Their hearts were both pounding; their weary bodies and worn-out faces made every step feel heavy. Reynaldo was already asleep in Marissa’s arms, his breathing labored and his skin burning with fever. Aurora knocked on the door hesitantly, hoping for a bit of luck on that exhausting morning. Not long after, the door creaked open. A middle-aged woman appeared, wearing a shabby house dress with her hair tied carelessly. Her gaze immediately scanned Aurora and Marissa from head to toe.“Who are you looking for?” she asked curtly, her eyes narrowing as if she had already judged them to be unwelcome guests.Aurora tried to smile politely. “We… would like to rent a room, ma’am. If there’s one available.”The woman snorted, folding her arms across her chest. “This inn is not a shelter for vagrants. Have you seen yourselves? Dirty, shabby. The villagers will be suspicious if I let you stay here.”Marissa stayed silent,

Rafael stood at the edge of the pier, his gaze empty, piercing through the dark, rolling sea. The night wind cut to the bone, carrying with it a thick salty scent. His breath was still ragged after the failed chase. From a distance, Haris’s hurried footsteps drew near.“Mr. Rafael…” Haris’s voice was heavy, weighed down by exhaustion and pressure. He stopped right beside him, his uniform damp with sweat, his face grim.“Edgar… he jumped into the sea. The men have already combed the area, but his trail just disappeared. The police will call in a SAR team so the search can be widened.”Rafael closed his eyes briefly, his jaw tightening. “So he managed to escape,” he muttered under his breath.Haris nodded, his face equally somber. “For Marissa and Aurora…” His words hung in the air, stuck in his throat. His gaze wavered, afraid of touching the wound that was clearly etched in Rafael’s eyes.Silence fell for a moment. The crashing waves agai

The sound of sirens tore through the night. Red and blue lights reflected off the calm waves of the sea. Police swarmed in from every direction, surrounding the harbor. Aurora froze, her steps stiff, her eyes wide as she stared at the scene that had suddenly become all too real before her.Edgar Marvelo glanced around in panic. “Impossible…” he muttered under his breath, his pale face showing a fear Aurora had never imagined seeing in him.Marissa clutched Reynaldo tighter, her body trembling. “Edgar, what do we do? They’ve surrounded us!”Aurora could only stand there, paralyzed. Her gaze shifted from her father, to Marissa, and finally stopped at Reynaldo. The boy coughed violently, his frail body shaking. His face was pale, cold sweat dripping down his temple. Aurora felt as though her chest was being crushed.“Aurora!” Rafael’s voice carried from a distance. He pushed forward, weaving through the line of armed police. His phone was still in hi

The streets were already dark as the taxi carrying Aurora kept moving through the city traffic. The streetlights blurred into faint lines passing by the window. The watch on her wrist showed eight in the evening. Two hours had passed since she left home, and every minute felt like a weight pressing down on her chest.Aurora leaned back, her hands trembling as she gripped her phone. Over and over, she dialed her father’s number. The ringtone echoed… once, twice, three times. But no one answered.“Dad… please pick up,” she whispered, her eyes brimming with tears. But there was only silence, the call ending on its own.The ride felt endless, her mind spinning further out of control.“Am I too late? Does Father really want to leave me just like that, without a single word?”The taxi finally stopped in front of the large harbor. The sound of waves and the shouts of dockworkers mixed with the rumble of ship engines. Aurora stepped out hesitantly, lo
