Car headlights cut through the darkness of the night, sweeping across the quiet front yard. The engine slowed to a stop, leaving behind a faint hum before going silent. Rafael glanced at the passenger seat, a faint smile tugging at his lips. Aurora was fast asleep, her head tilted against the window, her breathing steady. A few strands of hair had fallen over her cheek, making her look fragile.

“I knew you’d be exhausted,” Rafael murmured softly.

Instead of waking her, he stepped out first, then opened the door on Aurora’s side. The cold night air brushed against his face, but he ignored it. Carefully, he slid one arm under Aurora’s knees and the other behind her back. Her body felt light in his arms yet warm, making him reluctant to let go.

Aurora murmured softly, shifting a little, but remained asleep. Rafael held his breath for a moment, afraid he might wake her. Once he was sure she was still asleep, he stepped toward the house, pressing the doorknob w

The atmosphere at Rafael’s house that evening was serene. Aurora and Rafael had just returned from the hospital, their bodies weary, yet their hearts somehow felt a little lighter. There was a warmth that couldn’t be explained, like a brief pause from all the chaos that had haunted them.Aurora dropped herself onto the long sofa and rested her head on a pillow. Her hair was slightly messy, her face still carried traces of last night’s emotions, but her eyes looked clearer. Rafael watched her for a moment, then walked to the table and poured a glass of cold water.“Drink this,” he said, handing it to her.Aurora gave a faint smile, accepted it, and took a slow sip. “Thank you…” her voice was soft, as if drained of energy.Rafael sat down beside her. “Are you sure you’re okay?”“Yes.” Aurora nodded, then turned her gaze toward the window. “I just need a little time to… accept everything. But I’m okay.”Silence lingered. Only the ti

The morning air was still cold as sunlight slowly slipped through the gap in the bedroom curtains. Rafael opened his eyes earlier than usual, accustomed to a disciplined routine. But this time it wasn’t work, nor a pile of documents that woke him first it was the figure beside him.Aurora was asleep with a calm face, her breathing steady, as if all the tension of the past few days had finally melted away. Rafael gazed at her for a long time. Gratitude filled his chest, mingled with relief. He could watch this woman sleep peacefully without worrying about where she would go.Carefully, so as not to wake her, Rafael got up from the bed. He tucked the blanket more snugly around Aurora, then went downstairs. His kitchen was rarely used, especially by his own hands. Today, Rafael wanted to do something different. He wanted Aurora to feel cared for, to feel that this house was also hers.He opened the fridge, staring at its modest contents. A few eggs, bread, so

Reynaldo was finally moved to a VIP room in the hospital that afternoon. The room was spacious, clean, with a large window overlooking the city view. The bed was soft, complete with a warm blanket and a small television in the corner. Marissa looked surprised, her eyes welling up as she saw her little boy now enjoying a comfort she had never imagined before.Aurora stood by the bedside, holding Reynaldo’s still weak hand. The boy already seemed a little better, his breathing steady, though his face remained pale.“You’re so strong, Rey,” Aurora whispered softly, her voice full of love. Not long after, a knock was heard on the door, and Rafael appeared. In his hand was a large bag filled with food and a smaller bag containing children’s toys.“I thought Reynaldo might need something to cheer him up,” he said with a faint smile. He approached the bed and placed the toys on the small table beside it. There were toy cars, a small robot, and a few picture books.Reynaldo’s eyes lit up a li

Rafael’s car stopped in front of a modest motel in the middle of the city. Flickering neon lights glowed dimly, marking the place as anything but a luxurious inn more of a last resort for those with nowhere else to go. Aurora took a deep breath, her heart pounding. She knew that behind the small room’s door, Marissa and Reynaldo were waiting.Since early that morning, she had asked Marissa to remain inside the motel room no going out, no noise, nothing that might draw attention. Rafael turned to her before stepping out of the car. His gaze was steady, full of certainty, as if telling her there was nothing left to fear. Aurora lowered her head, then slowly opened the car door. The motel corridor felt narrow, the scent of damp carpet mixing with the aroma of fast food carried by the breeze. Aurora walked carefully, counting the door numbers. Rafael followed behind her, keeping his distance but staying alert. When they finally reached the room, Aurora knocked in the a

The room felt silent, the only sound was their uneven breathing after the burst of tears just moments ago. Rafael finally let go of the embrace, though reluctantly, and guided Aurora to sit on the sofa inside his study.Aurora wiped her face with trembling hands, tears still falling now and then. Rafael sat in front of her, his body leaning forward as if afraid to lose the chance to see her up close. His gaze was filled with a longing that tightened his chest.“Where have you been all this time, Aurora? Why… why did you just leave the hospital? Am I so meaningless to you that you chose to disappear?”Aurora lowered her head, her fingers clutching the edge of her jacket tightly. Rafael’s words pierced her heart. She opened her mouth, closed it again, then drew a long breath.“I… I don’t know where to start.”“Start with honesty.” Rafael stared without blinking. “That’s all I need from you.”Her tears flowed again, not out of fear, but because of the suffocating pain she had kept inside

Rafael sat behind his desk, head slightly bowed. The mountain of documents stacked high before him seemed to mock him. Reports, proposals, and files he had ignored for days now waited to be handled. But his heart wasn’t there. Every sheet of paper was just a reminder of how scattered his focus had been since Aurora left.He let out a long sigh, fingers pressing against his temples. He hadn’t truly slept all night; Aurora’s face kept haunting him, dancing through his mind, tangled with anger, disappointment, and a tormenting longing. The sudden ringing of the phone on his desk shattered the silence. Rafael lazily reached for the receiver, but the voice on the other end made his body tense instantly.“Sir, it’s me, Haris. We… found Aurora’s phone signal.”Rafael looked up, eyes lighting up. A smile spread across his face for the first time in days. “Are you sure?” he asked quickly, his voice thick with hope.“Yes, sir. I’m sure,” Haris repl
