Chapter 2

Author: Tiny Mess
Debra's words, heavy with concern, made me frown. "Our company actually has nepotism hires?"

"Of course it does. How else do you think someone who fails her performance review every single month gets to keep her job? It's all because Mr. Niles pulls strings for her."

Greg, who'd had his head down and been silently shoveling food into his mouth since the whole thing started, finally spoke up. The resentment from driving an extra 25 miles every day was practically radiating off him.

At the mention of Lawrence, everyone's eyes drifted toward me with pity. Penny reached over and patted my shoulder. "Just you wait. Mr. Niles is definitely calling you into his office today."

But I waited all afternoon, and the summons never came. It turned out every executive in the company had been pulled into a board meeting. Near the end of the day, Penny glanced over at Bethany's desk.

"You got so lucky. Let's get out of here the second we clock out. Don't give Bethany a chance to corner you."

The sheer relief on her face made me laugh. "Penny, you're way too stressed about this. I'll be fine. I haven't broken any company rules. Mr. Niles can't give me a hard time just because I asked Bethany to pay me back for a drumstick."

That said, I still left the office right on the dot, not because I was afraid of what Bethany might do, but because I had a doctor's appointment.

After getting the results, I couldn't help resting my hand on my stomach.

"The fetal heartbeat was normal, and the development is on track."

Before I even had a second to feel happy about it, my phone rang. It was my husband, Callan Garner.

"Honey, how'd it go? Are we having a baby?"

The eagerness in his voice wrapped me in this warm rush of happiness. Even though I knew he couldn't see me, I found myself nodding anyway. "The doctor says our baby is perfectly healthy."

"That's amazing! I'm going to be a dad!"

Ever since we'd found out from the pregnancy test last week, Callan had been counting down to today's appointment, but as luck would have it, he'd gotten pulled away on a business trip the day before.

"I'm sorry I couldn't be there with you, and you had to go through this alone. But just two more days and I'll be home."

"Just focus on your work. I'm pregnant, not sick. I'll be fine."

After I hung up, my mind drifted to Bethany. We were both pregnant, but I really couldn't relate to the way she acted.

The moment I got home, my phone buzzed several times in a row. I opened it to find I'd been added to a new group chat.

"Shelby, you've been with us for two months now, and your probation review is coming up. I've assigned one of our best senior employees to mentor you. Make sure you learn from her."

"Don't worry, Mr. Niles! I'll take great care of Shelby!"

"I have full confidence in you."

Watching Bethany's eager replies in the group chat made my stomach turn. I screenshotted the conversation and sent it to Penny.

"Penny, our company doesn't actually have a mentorship program, right?"

"Never has!

"Plus, Bethany ranked lower than you on last month's review. What could she possibly teach you?

"This is definitely just an excuse Mr. Niles cooked up so she can get back at you!"

Before I could even reply, Bethany's name popped up on my screen. The second I picked up, she was already laying into me. "Shelby! What is your problem? Did you not see Mr. Niles' message in the group? Why haven't you responded?

"You don't even know basic workplace etiquette. Looks like I really do need to teach you a thing or two!"

It had been one minute. I didn't realize I was obligated to instantly respond to work messages when I was off the clock, but since she was technically my assigned supervisor now, the least I could do was show some basic respect.

"Sorry, Bethany. I just got back from the hospital and didn't get a chance to check my phone."

"Oh, the hospital? Are you trying to say I'm overworking you? You young people always use your health as an excuse. I'm this far along in my pregnancy, and I'm still working hard every single day!"

The passive-aggression was practically oozing out of the phone, and I had to fight the urge to roll my eyes. Working hard at mooching off her coworkers, maybe, but as tempting as it was to say that out loud, I held my tongue.

"You're misunderstanding. That's not what I meant."

I didn't know where the knife in his hand came from. He might have grabbed it off my coffee table, or he might have brought it with him.By the time I fully registered what was happening, I was already in the back of an ambulance.Everything had spiraled into chaos. Bethany's husband had lunged at me with the knife, but I'd dodged fast enough that it only sliced my arm. Right as he was going in for a second swing, the delivery driver and the security team arrived at the same time and tackled both of them to the ground. The police hadn't even been called yet when Callan got home too. The entire ride in the ambulance, he kept blaming himself for working late and for ordering delivery."It had barely been two minutes since I placed the order when you said the food was already there. I knew something was wrong the second I saw that.""I'm fine. It just needs a few stitches."The wound wasn't deep at all. It was just long, which made it look worse than it was. Calling an ambulance had

I turned to find a man I'd never seen before, but the woman hiding behind him was all too familiar."Bethany?"Unlike this morning, her face was covered in bruises that were already turning purple. She'd clearly been hit. One look at the state of her and I could guess who this man was.I didn't even have time to think about my own stinging cheek before I turned on Bethany's husband. "You actually hit a woman who's six months pregnant? What kind of person are you?""She lost her job and cut off our income. What's wrong with roughing her up a little?"He raised his hand to hit Bethany again, but the very woman I'd just been defending pointed a finger straight at me. "It's her! That's the one who ruined everything for me! She threatened my uncle into suspending me. None of this is my fault. It's all because of her!""Figures. Some nosy little witch who can't mind her own business!"The slap that had been aimed at Bethany swung toward me instead. The back-to-back blows split the cor

This time, I wasn't going to do him any favors. Not that he had any dignity left in my eyes anyway."Mr. Niles, based on my observations over the past few weeks, I have serious concerns about Bethany's professional competence. I'll be conducting a thorough review of whether her hiring followed proper company procedures, and if anyone cut corners to get her in, I will hold them accountable."Lawrence faltered. "That's..."My pointed words made him squirm, and he shot a desperate look toward Callan. Callan acted like he didn't even see it, taking my hand without a second's hesitation."That's exactly what we'll do." He turned to Bethany one last time."I'm taking my wife to get checked out right now, and if anything is wrong, you can expect to hear from my lawyer."With that, he walked me out of the office.Even after we got into the car, his expression was still tight. I reached over and poked at the crease between his brows. "What are you even doing here today?""I'd just gotte

Bethany finally read the room after that outburst. The second she realized her uncle wasn't going to be able to protect her today, she pivoted and started sobbing directly at the chairman."Sir, you have no idea how cruel this woman is! She has absolutely no compassion! She knew I was pregnant and never showed me even the tiniest bit of kindness or concern! That's a direct violation of the company's employee welfare policy!"The more she talked, the more worked up she got, and before I knew it, she shoved me in front of everyone.I hadn't expected her to get physical. The push caught me completely off guard and I lost my balance, tipping sideways toward the floor. But the chairman, who had been standing motionless and stone-faced this entire time, caught me the instant before I hit the ground and pulled me firmly into his arms.It all happened so fast that most people hadn't even processed what was going on. All they saw was the chairman frantically checking me over, his composure

"What do you think?"I let out a tired sigh and pulled my real badge out of my bag, clipping it around my neck in front of everyone's stunned faces. The second Bethany read the words "HR Compliance Inspector" on it, she stumbled back. "How is that possible? You're just a regular intern!"At this company, I technically was just an intern. But at headquarters, I was an inspector sent to conduct an undercover audit of the branch's employment practices and management.I didn't bother answering her stammering. Instead, I went straight to my computer, pulled up my backup files, and took the flash drive from her hand. I projected both reports onto the office screen side by side. The two presentations were identical, and that was all the proof anyone needed that Bethany had stolen my work.I walked over to her, my voice calm and completely even. "You were right about one thing. I'm very good at filing complaints. Next time you try something like this, make sure you find the backup fil

Lawrence was sitting behind his desk with his phone still in his hand. Bethany must have already texted him."If a senior employee assigns you tasks, she has her reasons. You're the new hire here. What's wrong with doing a little extra? You can't even handle that?""It's not that I can't handle it. I just don't want to be singled out and pushed around for no good reason."The words had barely left my mouth when a loud bang made me jump. Lawrence and Bethany really were related. The way he slammed his hands on the desk and shot to his feet was practically identical."What are you implying? That Bethany is deliberately giving you a hard time over a drumstick? You're far too petty for your own good. I'm starting to seriously reconsider whether you're even a good fit for this company."I hadn't expected him to threaten me with my probation. I let out a resigned sigh."Mr. Niles, the company already has a cleaning crew. There's really no need to assign someone else to do the same work
