Chapter 1

The night before Brandon Sandler left on a business trip, he told me to stay home and wait for him. He said he had a surprise for me.

I lost myself in the warmth of his gentle smile, blind to the cold shadow buried deep in his eyes.

Not even in my worst dreams did I imagine that the “surprise” I’d been so excited to receive would be the news of his engagement to another woman in Lumiere.

For a moment, my mind went blank.

Over the past five years, Brandon had handled rumors with skill, and nothing like this had ever surfaced before.

My fingers trembled as I scrolled through the trending news. The longer I read, the more panic consumed me, and I threw my phone aside.

I told myself to stay calm, to wait patiently at home for him.

Finally, the next day at noon, Brandon returned.

I rushed to greet him in excitement, only for a girl to step out from behind him.

The moment I saw her face, everything I’d built inside me crumbled into ruin.

I no longer knew how to keep lying to myself.

My voice shook as I asked, “So this is the surprise you were talking about?”

Brandon chuckled and pulled the girl into his arms. “Isn’t it obvious? I thought one night was enough for you to process it.”

“Why?” I demanded as I clutched Brandon’s sleeve.

“Do you remember the girl who died after a botched surgery performed by your father, because he was drunk?” Brandon’s face darkened, his voice filled with venom.

“That was my sister! She was only seven years old.”

My mind snapped awake. I stared at Brandon, my head buzzing.

I was stunned.

“So… you kept me by your side because of that?” I asked, my voice shaking as I tried to process what he said.

“What else?” he sneered. “Why do you think I just happened to save you from being assaulted at that bar?

“Of course, it was all part of the plan.

“You’re so stupid and naive. I gave you the barest kindness, and you clung to it like it meant something. You were even in love with me,” Brandon finished with a mocking laugh.

Each word he spoke cut like a knife, slowly shredding me from within.

What a perfect scheme. He’d been gentle, made me believe I was cherished, only to shove me off the edge just when I felt safe.

My heart forgot how to beat, and in that moment, I realized I was nothing but a joke to him.

“Since that’s the case, your revenge is complete, isn’t it?” I asked as I forced myself to stand tall.

“We’re even now.”

Brandon’s eyes darkened with fury.

He let out a cold laugh as he grabbed my chin, forcing me to look at him.

“We’re far from even, Tiana. You’ll spend the rest of your life atoning for your sins.”

Blood pounded through my veins as I struggled to break free.

“I won’t!”

“That’s not up to you. Don’t forget, your mother’s life is still in my hands.”

I stared at him. I never imagined he would stoop so low as to threaten me with that.

The cold glint in his eyes made me shiver, and all resistance crumbled in that instant.

“What do you want from me?”

Brandon released me and wrapped his arm around the girl beside him.

“Starting tomorrow, you’ll be in charge of Leslie’s meals and wardrobe. Serve her well. If she’s not satisfied, I can’t guarantee I won’t have a few words with the hospital.”

“I’ll leave everything in your care, Tiana,” Leslie Paxton smiled sweetly and leaned into Brandon’s embrace.

The two of them looked so affectionate, like the perfect couple.

A dull ache throbbed in my chest as I stood before them in shame.

That night, I curled up in a tiny storage room, bitterness welling up inside me.

It was the new place Brandon had assigned to me, the only place he now deemed me worthy of.

Sleep didn’t come easily. When it did, it brought nightmares I hadn’t thought about in years.

Back then, after the medical accident my father caused, our family became a public target. Unable to endure the harassment, he jumped to his death.

My mother lost her mind, fell down the stairs, and became paralysed.

In one night, my family was destroyed, and I was no longer the carefree little princess I had once been.

To pay for my mother’s expensive treatments, I had no choice but to work at a bar until those so-called gentlemen pinned me down and tried to assault me.

At the critical moment, Brandon had saved me.

He gave me five years of affection when he pulled me from the abyss.

Yet now I find out that everything had been orchestrated from the very beginning.

The act of saving me was a lie.

His love was a lie, too.

As the dream shattered, I plunged back into the mire.

But this time, no one was coming to save me.

I instinctively tried to run, but Brandon held me back.“Don’t worry, I won’t lock you in,” he said, then released me and led me to the garden. At some point, it had become filled with yellow roses.“I’ve been thinking a lot lately,” Brandon began as he bent down to pick one of the roses. A thorn pierced his hand, drawing blood, but he didn’t seem to feel the pain. “Most of our memories were made here. Every single moment, I’ve regretted it—regretted being so consumed by revenge. If I had let it go back then, maybe things would’ve turned out differently for us.”“No,” I shook my head. “If you’d let go from the start, we probably never would’ve crossed paths. Even if you hadn’t tried to get revenge on my mother and me, the truth would’ve come out eventually. “You were still tied to my father’s death. We were doomed from the beginning. There was never going to be a happy ending.”His shoulders slumped even further under the weight of my words. Then suddenly, he stood up str

Behind me, the police had already subdued Leslie, but she continued to mutter in a manic daze, "You lied to me! You lied!"I froze as warm blood dripped onto my hand. The knife had lodged deep into Brandon’s back."Tiana? It really is you… " Brandon whispered weakly as he reached out to touch my face."Don’t be afraid. It doesn’t hurt. I’m just glad you’re safe."I tried to compose myself.“Police snipers aren’t as incompetent as you think," I said coldly. His face drained of color, and as the light vanished from his eyes, he collapsed to the ground.Medical staff rushed in and lifted him onto a stretcher. As I untied the ropes that bound me, I threw myself into Fabian’s waiting arms—right in Brandon’s fading line of sight. While Brandon underwent emergency surgery, I rushed back to his house, hoping to recover my mother’s ashes. But I found nothing. He had moved them. The realization hit me like a plunge into icy water. I forced a smile that didn’t reach my eyes. “What are you talking about, Mr. Sandler?”Brandon snorted coldly. “Finish your meal and go get some rest. Someone will show you to your room shortly.”I glanced at him in confusion. He didn’t intend to try his luck with me, did he?“I won’t touch another woman except Tiana,” he declared calmly as if he had read my mind.“That night was an accident. I expect you to forget it. And if you plan to use it as leverage to blackmail me, believe me—I have a hundred ways to make you regret it.” I feigned panic and nodded quickly. What a silver tongue he had, always the one to say the right thing. I patted the item in my bag meant to induce sleep. He’d just saved me the trouble.I had originally planned to sneak the ashes away tonight once Brandon passed out, but now, there was no rush.I was curious about the venom I saw in Leslie’s eyes. What did she intend to do this time?I continued playing along with Brandon as he warmed up to me, w

Brandon struggled to stay upright as he leaned in to kiss me, but the drug finally took hold, and he collapsed onto me.I pushed him off and quickly pulled a small capsule from my purse. Twisting it open, I sprinkled its contents onto the white sheets. Almost instantly, vivid red stains bloomed across the fabric like scattered plum blossoms.Once everything was in place, a knock sounded at the door.I frowned and crept toward it cautiously. The moment I opened it, I was pulled into a broad, familiar embrace, and the door slammed shut behind us.“Fabian, what are you—,” I began, but he had kissed me with such urgency that it took my breath away.He didn’t let go until I was weak in the knees. When he finally released me, he wiped the red marks on my neck with a deep scowl. That’s when I realized that he was jealous.I had, after all, returned to Brandon’s side for this plan. It must’ve wounded his pride.Blushing, I wrapped my arms around Brandon’s neck and whispered in his

The footsteps behind me grew louder. I clutched the heavy urn tightly and ran for my life— until my foot caught on a root. I crashed to the ground as the urn slipped from my grasp and skidded across the dirt.Panicked, I scrambled to pick it up, only to find sand spilling out of the shattered container. And nestled in the dust, a single note:[Go to hell, Tiana.]I froze.A second later, my pursuer caught up. A hand clamped over my nose and mouth, and a sharp chemical stench invaded my senses. My eyes, bloodshot with rage, locked onto Brandon as he stepped closer. Hatred surged through me, and I trembled uncontrollably through my tears.Overwhelmed by emotion, I failed to notice the fleeting flicker of sorrow in Brandon’s eyes. Then, without hesitation, I charged forward, raised my hand, and slapped him across the face with all the strength I had left.Leslie rushed toward him, covering her mouth in shock and distress, but Brandon shoved her aside.A second later, his hand shot out and clamped around my throat. He slammed me against the wall, his voice laced with fury as he ground out each word through clenched teeth. “I never should’ve gone soft on you.”The words made me laugh bitterly.Soft? Was that what he called it after using my mother’s life as punishment?Perhaps it was the mocking defiance in my eyes, or the hate that refused to dim, but Brandon’s grip only tightened around my neck.Breathing became agonizing.
