Grrnng… Grrnng…

The phone continued to ring, but no one answered.

What was I even expecting? My mom is dead, and I wasn’t even given the chance to grieve before I was thrown into the sea by my cruel father and his mistress, along with their wicked daughter.

Even my mother’s death wasn’t natural.

Oops! I haven’t introduced myself. My name is Tiffany Smith.

Where should I begin my story?

I was once the only daughter of the Smith family, one of the richest families in York County. I was a dignified, calm, and well-respected young woman in the elite social circle. My family had one of the best reputations, and lest I forget, I was also a well-known artist, famous for my bold and unconventional paintings that almost everyone admired. But as much as I had fans, I also had just as many haters.

Everything was going well until my mother decided to become close friends with my father’s female friend, Betty. Before long, they became inseparable, and her daughter, Stella, also became my friend.

Little did we know that Betty was my father’s mistress, and Stella was their forbidden child.

Don’t ask me how long their affair had been going on because I only found out a few minutes before I was thrown into the sea.

Yes… the sea.

Speaking of the sea, after my mother died—having spent nearly two years unconscious—I was still trying to cope with the loss when I saw my father and Betty kissing in my late mother’s bedroom.

Then Betty asked,

“What are we going to do with her now?”

My father frowned.

“Who? Tiffany?”

“Yes. Who else am I talking about?” Betty replied impatiently. “She must never find out about any of this.”

My father smirked.

“Don’t worry. I’ll find some people to take care of her. Nothing will ever come out. Then I’ll officially marry you, and you’ll become the new Mrs. Smith because the former holder of the title is dead.”

“Hahaha…”

The two of them burst into laughter.

I stood frozen in shock.

What on earth had I just witnessed?

Was I hallucinating?

My perfect father… and my mother’s best friend?

As I clutched the necklace my mother had given me, I slowly turned to leave, desperate to escape the horrifying reality before me.

But fate had other plans.

My foot caught the edge of the rug.

I stumbled.

Their heads snapped toward the door.

Betty’s eyes widened.

“I thought you said she was still at her mother’s grave crying!”

She turned to my father.

“Williams, you have to do something about this. She must not know anything else. She must never find out about Stella.”

The last thing I remember was my loving father grabbing a heavy flower vase and hurling it straight at me.

Everything went black.

When I regained consciousness, I was floating in the middle of the sea.

How I got there, I had no idea.

But I knew one thing for certain.

My father and his mistress were responsible.

Thankfully, I had taken swimming lessons when I was younger.

With every ounce of strength I had left, I swam toward what looked like an island.

When I finally reached the shore, relief washed over me.

I thought I had been saved.

But my joy was short-lived.

It was a deserted island.

The need to survive became urgent. People always say, “Survival of the fittest,” but tell me, why is it that in my case there is no one to survive with before I can even become the fittest? At least that would have made life a little easier.

Then Zeno faced me and said, “You know, a few weeks ago, I told you that I would find a way for you to leave this island. Enzo is here to help you. It won’t be easy, but I trust his capabilities.” He said this while tapping Enzo on the shoulder.Enzo looked shocked.“Old man, I thought you invited me so I could help you out of this miserable place. Don’t tell me you want to continue living all by yourself. It will be very risky, and the fact that I came here means the Serpents”—the code name for their enemies—“will start to suspect something and may discover that you are here. This place is no longer safe,”** Enzo rambled.“Old man, I know we’ve discussed this before, but still, what Enzo said is right. This place is no longer safe. You would be better off with us than staying here. We can actually see you and protect you,” I added. But the old man remained adamant. He said in a firm voice, “Thanks for the concern, but I am staying here, and that’s final.”Silence descended over the r

“Are you guys coming in, or do you want to be roasted by this scorching sun?” Zeno’s voice rang out as he was already making his way to his place. We both followed him obediently, our eyes filled with hundreds of questions.Enzo kept dusting his pants and waving his hand to swat away any insects that came near his face. When we got to Zeno’s place, he tapped both sides of the wooden bench he was sitting on, gesturing for us to sit. He then handed us some roasted yam and fish served with palm oil.In between bites, Enzo broke the silence.“L’Umbra è in declino.”(The Umbra is in decline.)The Umbra was the secret name for the Eclipse Syndicate, usually used by its members.Zeno reached for the stick beside him and smacked Enzo lightly on the mouth.“Even food can’t shut your running mouth. I wonder how you manage to keep secrets with that loose mouth of yours.”I burst into laughter and almost choked on my food. Enzo could only scratch his head awkwardly.“Moreover, Tiffany is Blood,”

I became restless and started pacing back and forth.“Zeno, please let me borrow your laptop,” I said.Zeno sighed.“You… I almost forgot that the faster you learn, the faster you forget.”He shook his head.“What did I teach you about your facial expressions and actions? I’ve always told you to remain calm, no matter the situation you’re facing.”He snorted.“Besides, I don’t think it’s wise for you to check it now. Why don’t you wait until you’ve left Tempest Isle?”He waved his hand dismissively.“Enough talking. Go back to training. From today onward, you’ll be training by yourself.”He paused before continuing.“I’ll try to get in touch with one of my loyalists to get you off this island.”I panicked.“I thought you said it would be dangerous if you were exposed.”Zeno smiled faintly.“But I can’t stay hidden forever. Besides, you’re the only one leaving. I’m already old. I just want to live the rest of my life in peace before I die. I can’t let you remain trapped here with me. Y

He smiled.“Not yet. But I can’t stay in hiding forever, and once I’m exposed, I’ll be in great danger. Every soldier must one day prepare a successor.”I scoffed.“And you think I’m that successor?”He smiled.“Tiffany, you underestimate yourself. I know you’re more than capable.”Then he slipped his hand into the worn leather wallet and carefully pulled out a black obsidian ring.He placed it gently in my palm.“Keep this with you at all times,” he said.I frowned.“But I told you I don’t want to lead the Eclipse Syndicate.”A faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips.“And I’m not asking you to.”He closed my fingers around the ring.“This ring is older than the Syndicate itself. It was first worn by my wife, Valentina. After her death, it became mine. It was meant for our children… but fate denied us that blessing.”He stared at the black stone for a moment.“To the underworld, this is not just a ring. It is a seal of authority. Every major organization knows it. They may not k

Facing me, he asked, “So, how did you end up here?”I looked at him and replied, “What if I told you I don’t know either? Would you believe me? The last thing I remember was catching my father and his mistress together just after my mother died.”He scoffed.“It seems you’ve had it even rougher than I did, especially for a naïve young lady like you.”He paused for a moment before continuing.“I’ve been thinking… how about joining the Eclipse Syndicate? Many elites and politicians are part of the organization, so there’s nothing to be afraid of. I want you to take my place as its leader. I know you’re more than capable. You see, I’ve been worried about you. How do you intend to survive if you ever leave this island? Surely you don’t plan on returning to your family. I’m certain that’s the last place you’d want to go.”I sighed.“Honestly, I don’t know what I want to do after leaving this place. But I don’t think I’m interested in joining the Eclipse Syndicate or taking your position.”

  • Where the Tide Returned    Chapter 5- Training 2

“There is still a lot you need to learn… and unlearn,” the old man sighed. For the rest of the afternoon, he taught me everything from Linux to Python to JavaScript. The lessons seemed endless. At first, every word sounded like Greek to me, but I forced myself to understand. Giving up had stopped being an option long ago. As dusk settled over the island, I thought the day’s training was finally over. I was wrong. The Old Man began another lesson—this time, about controlling my expressions. “Your eyes speak before your mouth does,” he said. “Learn to silence them.” “No matter what the situation is, even if a gun is pointed at your head, remain calm and composed.” “Control your breathing.” “Observe people before you respond.” Then he looked directly into my eyes. “And never let people know what you fear, what you love, or what you’re thinking. The moment they can read your face…” “…they’ve already won.” By the end of the day’s training, I felt like a walking co
