Purpose: Assessment of psychological and neurological status and possible drug intoxication immediately following the recovery of consciousness

Test Results

Ketamine: Positive in both blood and urine

Norketamine (ketamine metabolite): Detected

Midazolam: 0.12 mg/L (above the upper limit of the therapeutic range)

Benzodiazepine metabolites: Positive

Psychological and Neurological Status

Responsive to stimuli and capable of visual recognition; impaired short-term memory and disorientation to time

Repeated, obsessive statements that she “may have killed someone”

Suspected PTSD, accompanied by flashbacks and sensory re-experiencing

Physical findings: Malnutrition / dehydration / evidence of cuts

Overall Assessment

The patient shows evidence of prolonged, combined administration of a benzodiazepine (midazolam) and a dissociative anesthetic (ketamine), a combination that can cause memory disturbances, emotional blunting, and dissociative symptoms. Although her condition is improving, continued monitoring and specialist treatment are considered necessary for drug dependence and post-traumatic stress responses.

“They found a benzodiazepine in your blood, most likely midazolam. It’s stronger than ordinary sleeping pills, and memory loss is a reported side effect.”

“Midazolam…?”

“And ketamine.”

“Ketamine?”

“It’s a painkiller that can cause hallucinations, distort your sense of time, and make you feel detached from reality.”

“Are you saying I ended up like this because I became addicted to those drugs?”

Jin-woo nodded gravely.

“Someone who could get those drugs easily. Someone you would accept them from without suspicion.”

A face came to Seo-wan’s mind at once.

Seo Min-gyu.

Her lover, her psychiatrist, her treating physician. A man who had been perfection itself.

“He said they were just sleeping pills. Because I couldn’t sleep…”

“It starts with sleeping pills. Then, once you begin to rely on them…”

Jin-woo let out a quiet sigh and paused.

Seeing him look even more distressed than she was, she found herself feeling almost apologetic.

“You know how it works, Seo-wan. We’ve seen so many cases like this.”

“Yes. We have. Was I arrogant enough to think it could never happen to me?”

Seo-wan raised her head and met her reflection in the dressing-table mirror. Slowly, she stood and walked toward it.

Brittle hair. Pale, rough skin. An emaciated body. Lifeless eyes.

And two hands trembling faintly.

She clasped them tightly together, trying to stop the tremor. Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“This isn’t… This isn’t me.”

Jin-woo approached her as she stood trembling and crying, then gently turned her to face him.

“This isn’t your fault. I’ll help you. I’ll get you back to who you were.”

“…”

His gentle words always carried strength. They always reassured her.

Gathering her courage, Seo-wan rested her head on his shoulder and sobbed.

With her in his arms, Jin-woo softly patted her back and asked cautiously,

“Seo-wan, tell me what happened between you and Seo Min-gyu.”

***

A gray city. Streets crowded with people in shades of gray.

Among them, he remains an observer, watching the street.

He merely goes on living in a tedious world filled with repulsive human beings.

Ironically, he despises people, yet he studies them. Though no one could be more indifferent to the world, he lives his life with diligence.

A caring doctor to his patients. A good boss at work. He wears that tiresomely conscientious mask, going through life pretending to be a decent man.

It was Saturday afternoon, after his last appointment. Min-gyu sat by the window of a café overlooking an intersection, drinking coffee.

Coffee, along with whisky, was his only pleasure in life.

His phone chimed with a text notification, and his expression hardened.

[Doctor, hope you’re having a lovely weekend! You hurt my feelings when you turned me down for a date yesterday. T_T

If you’re done seeing patients, how about a glass of wine tonight? I know a nice wine bar. ^^

It’s such a shame to see you only during appointments~ You can’t turn me down this time. ^^]

“Crazy bitch.”

He muttered the words under his breath, his brow furrowing.

How had she gotten his phone number this time? His disbelief gave way to mounting anger.

Irritated, he deleted the message and blocked her number.

But it would be no use.

She would call the clinic. Failing that, she would show up in person. A leech like her was more than capable of it.

He recoiled at the way she kept pushing further past his boundaries. He knew the habits of people like her all too well.

Only death would put an end to this madness.

He turned his gaze back to the street. The midday spring sun poured through the large window, radiating heat.Despite the heat by the window, the coffee in his hand was hot, too.And so he endured another tedious day, one cup at a time. Then a commotion broke out in the café. People began gathering, murmuring among themselves. As they crowded around the windows and entrance, he frowned, making no effort to hide his irritation.A woman screamed.“The door! Lock the door! Hurry!”The man’s shout snapped the others out of their confusion, and they quickly locked the entrance.Inside, a measure of calm returned. Outside, the street was descending into chaos.A middle-aged man sat slumped on the ground, bleeding and trembling. The man who had stabbed him prowled the street, searching for another target.Wherever he went, pandemonium followed.People screamed and scattered before him like the parting of the Red Sea. He continued roaming, looking for another victim to fall to his blade. The

Inside the desk drawer was another envelope. Seo-wan went through the documents one by one.—Medication Dispensing Log—Seo-wan’s Investigation Notes—Vehicle 11-1234 — Tollgate Records—Seo Min-gyu Psychiatry Clinic — Medical Records—Detective Choi Seo-wan’s Call Records Before Her DisappearanceAt the very bottom lay a USB drive. Seo-wan picked it up and went still. What was on it?She opened the laptop and plugged in the drive. A password prompt appeared. After staring blankly at the screen, she tried Jin-woo’s birthday.[Incorrect password]His phone number?[Incorrect password]His employee ID?[Incorrect password]“Ha…”She tapped her fingers against the desk.“Don’t tell me…”When she entered her own date of birth, a soft chime sounded, and the contents appeared.“[SR]? What’s SR?”She clicked the folder. Inside were recordings of phone calls, organized by date.Seo-wan clicked the first file.“Why are you only answering now? Huh? Why is it so hard to get hold of you? Hello!”

The atmosphere in the car was heavy.Three months was too long an absence to bridge with a casual “How have you been?”Seo-wan sat in the passenger seat, staring blankly out the window.Ordinary scenes passed outside, yet everything looked unfamiliar to her. It all felt so distant.“Just a little longer. We’re almost there.”Jin-woo spoke gently, but she barely reacted. Her eyes shifted toward him at his words, but there was nothing in them. When they reached her apartment building, Jin-woo opened the passenger door and spoke softly.“Seo-wan. You’re home.”She slowly turned her head.“…Here…”“This is your place. You remember, don’t you?”She gave a tentative nod.She was home. So why did it feel so unfamiliar? She followed Jin-woo into the building as he led the way with familiar ease. When he opened her front door, the motion-sensor light in the entryway came on at once, as though welcoming her back. The apartment was neat and tidy. By the entrance sat the sneakers she had often wo

As Jin-woo met her eyes for the first time in three months, he was momentarily at a loss for words. She had grown painfully thin. Her eyes were sunken, her long hair disheveled, and her cracked lips were stained with spots of blood. Her once-healthy complexion had faded beyond pale, taking on a grayish, almost ashen hue.She hardly looked like herself. At last, she raised her head and met his eyes."Jin-woo?"That single word caught in his chest, stealing his breath. A tremor began in his fingertips. This wasn't the strong, clear-eyed woman he remembered. She looked as fragile as a shattered mirror, her unfocused eyes utterly empty.Jin-woo struggled to steady his trembling voice. Then he turned toward the investigators, his gaze and tone firm."…I'm taking her out of here. Come back with a warrant."Without waiting for a response, Jin-woo strode toward Seo-wan.He'd expected some unpleasantness. After all, a fellow police officer was sitting in the suspect's chair. But the reality wa
