LOGINAs Jin-woo met her eyes for the first time in three months, he was momentarily at a loss for words.
She had grown painfully thin.
Her eyes were sunken, her long hair disheveled, and her cracked lips were stained with spots of blood.
Her once-healthy complexion had faded beyond pale, taking on a grayish, almost ashen hue.
She hardly looked like herself.
At last, she raised her head and met his eyes.
"Jin-woo?"
That single word caught in his chest, stealing his breath. A tremor began in his fingertips.
This wasn't the strong, clear-eyed woman he remembered.
She looked as fragile as a shattered mirror, her unfocused eyes utterly empty.
Jin-woo struggled to steady his trembling voice. Then he turned toward the investigators, his gaze and tone firm.
"…I'm taking her out of here. Come back with a warrant."
Without waiting for a response, Jin-woo strode toward Seo-wan.
He'd expected some unpleasantness. After all, a fellow police officer was sitting in the suspect's chair.
But the reality was far more unpleasant than he'd imagined.
Inspector Park pressed a hand to his furrowed forehead.
"Detective Kim Jin-woo, what exactly do you think you're doing?
"She was found covered in blood near the scene of a suspected murder, and the victim is missing.
"Her statement is unclear. We can't just overlook all this and let her walk out—"
"There's no body. No body. The evidence, Inspector."
Jin-woo cut him off firmly.
"There's no confession. No eyewitnesses. And above all, she's suffering from psychological trauma and malnutrition."
Jin-woo dropped a medical report onto the desk as though throwing it down.
"Here's the psychiatric evaluation. You've kept someone in a mentally and physically impaired state under interrogation all night without a warrant. That's clearly an excessive investigation.
"Even now, you haven't established whether she's a victim or a perpetrator."
"The amount of blood found tells us that Seo Min-gyu is the victim!"
"Then you should start by locating your victim."
"He could have been killed and his body disposed of."
"Then where is the body?"
"That's exactly what we're trying to find out!"
"Unless she tells you, finding it is the police's job."
"Listen here, Detective Kim!"
"And why are you ruling out the possibility that Seo-wan is the victim? Just look at her condition!"
"That's what we're trying to determine as the investigation—"
Jin-woo cut him off without hesitation.
"This looks like an unlawful interrogation. I assume the recording has been preserved? Every part of this questioning could come back to haunt you."
Inspector Park's face flushed with anger as he rose from his chair.
The tension between the two men tightened around the interrogation room.
"If we stand by and do nothing, we'll never find the body! She's the only one who knows where it is!"
"No one has been confirmed dead, Inspector. As of now, this is a missing-person case."
"How can you be so sure? There was enough blood to make anyone believe someone had died!"
"We don't even know where that person is. Take a good look at her.
"Do you seriously believe she could have disposed of a grown man's body in that condition?"
Jin-woo didn't raise his voice again.
Instead, he slowly turned to look at Seo-wan.
She was staring blankly at them.
She didn't appear fully aware of her surroundings, and her hands trembled faintly in her lap.
"She was missing for three months. No one could find her. And now she's finally… finally come back."
"......"
"She was an outstanding detective. The perfect partner. She's not someone who would do this!"
"That doesn't prove anything."
It wasn't that Inspector Park couldn't understand Jin-woo.
He knew perfectly well what a partner meant to a detective.
But that wasn't proof she wasn't a murderer.
"We'll continue cooperating with the investigation. But until you obtain a formal warrant, she'll be under my protection."
With that, Jin-woo turned toward Seo-wan.
"…Am I to understand that you're taking responsibility for her?"
"Of course."
Inspector Park couldn't give him a reasonable basis for keeping her there.
He watched them in silence for a moment, then slowly raised his hand and spoke to another detective.
"Let her go."
Jin-woo quietly approached Seo-wan, knelt in front of her, and met her eyes.
"Seo-wan, let's go. You don't have to stay here anymore."
Seo-wan accepted his support and slowly stood.
"Jin-woo… could I really have killed Mr. Seo?"
Jin-woo didn't answer.
He simply wrapped one arm around her shoulders, supporting her carefully as they walked down the corridor.
"Right now, getting you healthy again comes first. After that, we'll figure out what happened to you, one thing at a time."
As the two reached the end of the police station corridor, Inspector Park's deep voice followed them.
"Detective Choi Seo-wan! Detective Kim Jin-woo! We'll be seeing each other again soon!"
Jin-woo didn't look back.
He only tightened his grip on Seo-wan's shoulder and wrist.
And silently, he made himself a promise.
Seo-wan, I will never leave you on your own again.
In the glass of the police station building, Seo-wan's reflection appeared—staggering as she leaned against Jin-woo for support.
Inspector Park watched her through narrowed eyes.
Inside the desk drawer was another envelope. Seo-wan went through the documents one by one.—Medication Dispensing Log—Seo-wan’s Investigation Notes—Vehicle 11-1234 — Tollgate Records—Seo Min-gyu Psychiatry Clinic — Medical Records—Detective Choi Seo-wan’s Call Records Before Her DisappearanceAt the very bottom lay a USB drive. Seo-wan picked it up and went still. What was on it?She opened the laptop and plugged in the drive. A password prompt appeared. After staring blankly at the screen, she tried Jin-woo’s birthday.[Incorrect password]His phone number?[Incorrect password]His employee ID?[Incorrect password]“Ha…”She tapped her fingers against the desk.“Don’t tell me…”When she entered her own date of birth, a soft chime sounded, and the contents appeared.“[SR]? What’s SR?”She clicked the folder. Inside were recordings of phone calls, organized by date.Seo-wan clicked the first file.“Why are you only answering now? Huh? Why is it so hard to get hold of you? Hello!”
The atmosphere in the car was heavy.Three months was too long an absence to bridge with a casual “How have you been?”Seo-wan sat in the passenger seat, staring blankly out the window.Ordinary scenes passed outside, yet everything looked unfamiliar to her. It all felt so distant.“Just a little longer. We’re almost there.”Jin-woo spoke gently, but she barely reacted. Her eyes shifted toward him at his words, but there was nothing in them. When they reached her apartment building, Jin-woo opened the passenger door and spoke softly.“Seo-wan. You’re home.”She slowly turned her head.“…Here…”“This is your place. You remember, don’t you?”She gave a tentative nod.She was home. So why did it feel so unfamiliar? She followed Jin-woo into the building as he led the way with familiar ease. When he opened her front door, the motion-sensor light in the entryway came on at once, as though welcoming her back. The apartment was neat and tidy. By the entrance sat the sneakers she had often wo

The following day, at Jungsan Police Station. The lights in the dark, oppressive interrogation room flickered before finally illuminating the room.It was a familiar place, yet Seo-wan found herself in an unfamiliar position. She stared blankly around her, her head still heavy, her mind clouded as though she were walking on air."Where is he?"The words escaped with difficulty through her dry, cracked lips.Silence hung over the interrogation room.Across from her, Inspector Park In-su flipped irritably through a stack of documents without looking up.Instead, another detective seated beside him asked sharply,"Are you referring to Mr. Seo Min-gyu?"Seo-wan nodded.Inspector Park snapped the file shut and fixed her with a piercing stare. The look he gave her was the look reserved for a suspect. His firm, emotionless tone felt threatening."You should know that better than anyone, Detective Choi."It wasn't the answer she'd wanted."…Is he dead?"The inspector's gaze sharpened. He lift
Blood sprayed in every direction."Hey! Miss! Are you all right? The ambulance will be here soon! Just hang on a little longer!""He's… he's dead. I… I killed him."Was it the relief of finally seeing another person?Words I never meant to say spilled from my mouth before I could even think.I wanted to scream at him to find Min-gyu, but my body was already acting on its own, beyond my control.I have to find him. Yet I couldn't get the image of the blood-soaked vacation house out of my head. The horror of all that blood drained the warmth from my body. My mind filled with images of crimson, and my consciousness slowly began to fade."Miss! Stay with me! Miss! Good heavens, what on earth happened?"***I slowly opened my heavy eyelids.Harsh fluorescent light flooded my vision.I blinked against the brightness, my eyes struggling to adjust as I looked around.Where am I…?A faint smell of antiseptic reached my nose, bringing a wave of nausea.A white ceiling. White curtains. The quiet
“You killed me.”“You're the one who killed me.”“Don't forget. You're the one who killed me.”The day the world turned red with blood, I lost myself.I struggled to pry open my eyelids, stiff and crusted shut.“Ah…”The ceiling was familiar.Old wooden beams. Blackout curtains covering the windows. A fireplace filled with nothing but ashes.I knew this place. The vacation house. His vacation house. The place where we'd run outside hand in hand on the day of the first snowfall. Where he'd whispered that he loved me, where we'd spent so many hours together. And where I'd stabbed him.Cold wrapped itself around my body. My chest felt crushed, as though something were pressing down on my heart and lungs, making it impossible to breathe.I dragged in a ragged breath. There was something metallic in the air.Blood? The smell of dried blood began to awaken every dormant cell in my body.I forced myself upright and looked down.Dark, reddish-brown stains covered me from head to toe. With tremb
