Inside the desk drawer was another envelope. Seo-wan went through the documents one by one.

—Medication Dispensing Log

—Seo-wan’s Investigation Notes

—Vehicle 11-1234 — Tollgate Records

—Seo Min-gyu Psychiatry Clinic — Medical Records

—Detective Choi Seo-wan’s Call Records Before Her Disappearance

At the very bottom lay a USB drive. Seo-wan picked it up and went still.

What was on it?

She opened the laptop and plugged in the drive. A password prompt appeared.

After staring blankly at the screen, she tried Jin-woo’s birthday.

[Incorrect password]

His phone number?

[Incorrect password]

His employee ID?

[Incorrect password]

“Ha…”

She tapped her fingers against the desk.

“Don’t tell me…”

When she entered her own date of birth, a soft chime sounded, and the contents appeared.

“[SR]? What’s SR?”

She clicked the folder. Inside were recordings of phone calls, organized by date.

Seo-wan clicked the first file.

“Why are you only answering now? Huh? Why is it so hard to get hold of you? Hello!”

What is this…?

Just then, the doorbell rang.

Startled, she hurriedly pulled the USB drive out of the laptop.

A series of beeps followed as someone entered the door code.

Seo-wan put the drive back where she had found it and hurried over to the sofa.

The lock chimed, and Jin-woo stepped inside with a light tread.

“Seo-wan, I’m back.”

The aroma of hot blood sausage soup followed him in, filling the apartment.

Seo-wan sat on the sofa with the towel still wrapped around her hair, as though nothing had happened.

Their eyes met, and they exchanged slightly awkward smiles.

Breaking the uneasy silence, Jin-woo set the hot soup on the dining table.

He opened a cupboard with practiced ease, took out two large bowls, spoons, and chopsticks, then carefully poured the soup from the hot plastic containers into the bowls.

“Come and eat. You always liked the soup from this place.”

“…Thank you.”

Jin-woo smiled as he set the table. As always, it was a smile that put people at ease and lifted their spirits.

“Just the blood sausage, no added seasoning, right? You always gave me all the offal.”

A small laugh escaped her.

“You remember that?”

“Of course. We must’ve had a hundred bowls of this together.”

She let out a little snort.

“You’re exaggerating.”

Seo-wan slowly took a spoonful of soup. As the warm broth spread through her body, even her mind seemed to clear.

Blood sausage soup. Pork backbone stew. Grilled pork belly with a glass of soju. The meals she had enjoyed with her colleagues after a day out in the field.

Only now did she find herself thinking of her ordinary days as Detective Choi Seo-wan.

What have I been eating all this time?

As she searched those missing days for an answer, she looked down at the fingers wrapped around her spoon. They were little more than skin and bone.

Jin-woo placed a piece of kimchi on her spoon as she stared down at it.

“Seo-wan, do you remember when we first met?”

“Of course. You were such a stiff, formal rookie back then.”

“Do you know how impressive you were back then?”

“Was I? That makes it sound like I’m not anymore.”

A sad smile touched her lips as she thought back to those days.

Jin-woo let out a short, amused breath at her familiar humor.

He had been beside her through the most painful case of her career as a detective.

“You cried a lot back then.”

“You knew? That’s a little embarrassing.”

Keeping his eyes on his spoon, Jin-woo gave a bitter smile.

“It was a hard case. For both of us.”

Seo-wan had never spoken aloud about the case that had left such a deep wound. Jin-woo had never brought it up, either.

But neither needed to say anything. They shared those memories, and now they were both looking back on them.

With the same memories between them, they simply ate in silence.

After the meal, Jin-woo took out the pour-over coffee supplies from beside the sink and put the kettle on.

Seo-wan remained at the table, quietly watching him.

“Here you go.”

He set a steaming cup of coffee before her.

“Thank you.”

She brought the cup to her nose. Warmth brushed her face, and the aroma made her head swim.

“Ethiopian.”

“That’s right. Nothing gets past you when it comes to coffee.”

Jin-woo sat across from her, holding his own cup in one hand.

Still gazing into her coffee, Seo-wan slowly spoke.

“Jin-woo. Do you think I really killed him?”

Somehow, she felt he would have the answer.

“Seo-wan, look at me.”

At the sound of his voice, she raised her head.

“Absolutely not. You would never do that.”

“But what I did to him… with my own hands…”

“Your mind isn’t clear right now. Can you be sure that’s what you actually remember?”

“I don’t know. During the time I was at the villa… it feels like I wasn’t myself.”

When she finished speaking, Jin-woo retrieved the documents he had left on the shoe cabinet and placed them in front of her.

“They found drugs in your system.”

Seo-wan slowly opened the envelope and took out the doctor’s written assessment.

The atmosphere in the car was heavy.Three months was too long an absence to bridge with a casual “How have you been?”Seo-wan sat in the passenger seat, staring blankly out the window.Ordinary scenes passed outside, yet everything looked unfamiliar to her. It all felt so distant.“Just a little longer. We’re almost there.”Jin-woo spoke gently, but she barely reacted. Her eyes shifted toward him at his words, but there was nothing in them. When they reached her apartment building, Jin-woo opened the passenger door and spoke softly.“Seo-wan. You’re home.”She slowly turned her head.“…Here…”“This is your place. You remember, don’t you?”She gave a tentative nod.She was home. So why did it feel so unfamiliar? She followed Jin-woo into the building as he led the way with familiar ease. When he opened her front door, the motion-sensor light in the entryway came on at once, as though welcoming her back. The apartment was neat and tidy. As Jin-woo met her eyes for the first time in three months, he was momentarily at a loss for words. She had grown painfully thin. Her eyes were sunken, her long hair disheveled, and her cracked lips were stained with spots of blood. Her once-healthy complexion had faded beyond pale, taking on a grayish, almost ashen hue.She hardly looked like herself. At last, she raised her head and met his eyes."Jin-woo?"That single word caught in his chest, stealing his breath. A tremor began in his fingertips. This wasn't the strong, clear-eyed woman he remembered. She looked as fragile as a shattered mirror, her unfocused eyes utterly empty.Jin-woo struggled to steady his trembling voice. Then he turned toward the investigators, his gaze and tone firm."…I'm taking her out of here. Come back with a warrant."Without waiting for a response, Jin-woo strode toward Seo-wan.He'd expected some unpleasantness. After all, a fellow police officer was sitting in the suspect's chair. But the reality wa

The following day, at Jungsan Police Station. The lights in the dark, oppressive interrogation room flickered before finally illuminating the room.It was a familiar place, yet Seo-wan found herself in an unfamiliar position. She stared blankly around her, her head still heavy, her mind clouded as though she were walking on air."Where is he?"The words escaped with difficulty through her dry, cracked lips.Silence hung over the interrogation room.Across from her, Inspector Park In-su flipped irritably through a stack of documents without looking up.Instead, another detective seated beside him asked sharply,"Are you referring to Mr. Seo Min-gyu?"Seo-wan nodded.Inspector Park snapped the file shut and fixed her with a piercing stare. The look he gave her was the look reserved for a suspect. His firm, emotionless tone felt threatening."You should know that better than anyone, Detective Choi."It wasn't the answer she'd wanted."…Is he dead?"The inspector's gaze sharpened. He lift

Blood sprayed in every direction."Hey! Miss! Are you all right? The ambulance will be here soon! Just hang on a little longer!""He's… he's dead. I… I killed him."Was it the relief of finally seeing another person?Words I never meant to say spilled from my mouth before I could even think.I wanted to scream at him to find Min-gyu, but my body was already acting on its own, beyond my control.I have to find him. Yet I couldn't get the image of the blood-soaked vacation house out of my head. The horror of all that blood drained the warmth from my body. My mind filled with images of crimson, and my consciousness slowly began to fade."Miss! Stay with me! Miss! Good heavens, what on earth happened?"***I slowly opened my heavy eyelids.Harsh fluorescent light flooded my vision.I blinked against the brightness, my eyes struggling to adjust as I looked around.Where am I…?A faint smell of antiseptic reached my nose, bringing a wave of nausea.A white ceiling. “You killed me.”“You're the one who killed me.”“Don't forget. You're the one who killed me.”The day the world turned red with blood, I lost myself.I struggled to pry open my eyelids, stiff and crusted shut.“Ah…”The ceiling was familiar.Old wooden beams. Blackout curtains covering the windows. A fireplace filled with nothing but ashes.I knew this place. The vacation house. His vacation house. The place where we'd run outside hand in hand on the day of the first snowfall. Where he'd whispered that he loved me, where we'd spent so many hours together. And where I'd stabbed him.Cold wrapped itself around my body. My chest felt crushed, as though something were pressing down on my heart and lungs, making it impossible to breathe.I dragged in a ragged breath. There was something metallic in the air.Blood? The smell of dried blood began to awaken every dormant cell in my body.I forced myself upright and looked down.Dark, reddish-brown stains covered me from head to toe. With tremb
