“Do you smell that?” I ask Lila. She sniffs the air and walks a few steps, “Yes, and look!” she points. The smoke is filling the air above us and my heart begins to race, “Leave the bags!” I shout as I grab her hand and we run toward the farm.
“Maddie, slow down! I can’t see anything!” Lila stumbles behind me.
I have perfect vision no matter what the conditions are, it’s a perk of being a wolf.
“And what about the store items?” she stops, looking back, “Mrs. Stevenson is going to kill us!” she says, breathing deeply.
“Lila,” I say, trying to remain calm, “I think the orphanage is on fire.” I blurt out.
She stares at me confused and now she begins running as she grabs my hand again, “What makes you think that?!” I get in the lead and guide her through the night, “The smoke is coming from that direction. I hope I am wrong. If we have to go back and get the bags, we will. I would rather be late and wrong than right.” I admit. Though, I fear my vision has come true and I won’t be able to help. I hope this time it’s wrong.
We get close enough to the orphanage to see that it is indeed on fire. Flames cascade on the roof and through the windows but as we get closer, I notice we are not alone. Black SUVs are parked in front of the farmhouse and my heart stops; they have found me.
My past has come back to haunt me. Those are definitely the lab people’s vehicles.
Lila goes to scream but I cover her mouth quickly and we move behind the barn for cover. The house is on fire and anyone inside is definitely dead. I look up with tears in my eyes, Joshua and the rest of them; this is my fault.
We hear a scream and look toward the sound. There’s a man and he has Mrs. Stevenson by the throat. She wrestles against him, and he backhands her across the face, “Now where is she?!” he demands. His voice is rough and almost familiar.
It’s the shadow I saw.
“I told you; I don’t know whom you are talking about!” she spats at him. He hits her again, “I have burned your precious home for orphans with all of them inside and you still won’t tell me what I want to know?! I know she was here! I can smell her!”
Mrs. Stevenson wipes her face again but shakes her head. Why is she covering for me? She knows he is talking about me. This man is evil. Maybe she knows she has already lost?
“If that’s the way you want, then fine.” He says, pointing to the orphanage door. Another man opens the door, not even flinching at the hot door handle. The man picks up Mrs. Stevenson once more and she shrieks as he throws her into the house, shutting the door. The house is already engulfed in flames, and she is next.
The screams I heard in my vision come true as she pounds against the wood and cries, “Let me out! Let me out!”
Lila has tears streaming down her face, but I hold her mouth tighter. If they do find me, they will only kill her or worse.
The man who threw Mrs. Stevenson in the house reaches into his pocket and pulls out a phone. The banging on the door has now stopped and I look at Lila; Mrs. Stevenson is dead along with everyone else we know.
“Sir, 1001 isn’t here but she was. I can smell her.” He speaks into the phone, and I can’t breathe. After 9 years, I am in danger once again.
He walks to the car, “Yes sir, we will keep looking. No, I know my orders. I will bring her home alive. Yes, she is the key to the others. I won’t come home without her.”
My eyes have tears streaming out of them and he turns around, looking toward the barn. My eyes now deceive me, there is no way. WHY!? My vision is blurry; this can’t be so!
The man hunting me is Colt.
My head feels fuzzy. I am so happy he is alive, but I am so angry at myself. Why wouldn’t the others let me go back?! Andy was sure he was dead. He had said if didn’t make it out, he was dead for sure. Staying there only increased his chances with the poison from the experiments they were giving him.
But yet, here he stands. He was stronger than any of us ever knew.
I want to run to Colt; I want to hug him and tell him how much I have missed him. I want to inhale his scent and lay in the grass and watch the clouds with him. I want him to be my best friend again, but he is my enemy. He is hunting me, and he wants to take me back to hell.
He is no longer the sick child that tried to escape with us. He is strong. I can see his male physique from here and my heart races. I have never felt like this toward a male before. My whole being is longing to be with him. I don’t understand these feelings and my wolf is howling inside.
Colt and the other men get back into their SUVs and drive down the driveway. I push Lila down into the grass further for camouflage as they drive by. Once their headlights are out of sight, I let go of Lila.
She stands up immediately, running toward the house, “Maddie, help me! We have to help them!” she screams.
My vision is blurred. I can’t even see as I walk toward her and pull her into my grip, holding her tight, “They’re gone,” I whisper.
She cries harder into my arms as I look at the place that was never really my home but it was familiar. It was safe for a long time. Safer than the lab at least.
I let Lila cry until she heaves, and her breath is heavy, “Lila, we have to go,” I sigh.
She stares at me, “Go where Maddie?! We have to tell the police what happened! We can’t go!”
I look at her and my heart knows what to do, “Lila, those men they were looking for me, I can’t stay here. You can but I need to get away from here. I need to find Andy.”
She looks at the house and then back at me, “They want you?”
I nod and I wipe my eyes; it was foolish to think I was safe. 9 years was a long time, but I let my guard down. I have become too human.
“I want to go with you.” Her voice is soft and unsure.
“Lila, it’s dangerous. They won’t stop looking for me. You’re better off here when the police come.” I sigh, turning to walk away but she runs toward me, and spins me around.
“You said we were sisters! I don’t care about the danger! I want to go with you! That was the plan before. This place isn’t my home or yours! Let me come!”
I look at the house behind her, ash flies through the night sky and the smoke is thick, I don’t want to leave her behind. The truth is, I don’t want to be alone.
“Fine but you have to listen to everything I say,” I tell her sternly.
She sighs as she wraps her arms around me tightly hugging me, “I promise.”
I nod and grab her hand, “We have to go.” She holds my hand tightly and we both look at what used to be the farmhouse, but I know what to do.
It’s time I used my training and wolf again. I need to find Andy and the others. I need to warn them they are after all of us. The big man said we were stronger together, but we didn’t hang around long enough to find out what they meant.
Not only am I being hunted, but now I have my little adoptive sister with me, and I will do whatever it takes to keep her safe
I have no idea where we are going or what this journey holds, but I know it will be hard. Colt won’t give up until he has me in his claws.
Colt POV9 years ago the only friends I had in this entire world, left me. The plan was for all of us to escape but that’s not how it played out. I tripped and fell, and they didn’t come back for me.I foolishly thought they would but when they got the keycard and ran outside, it was every wolf for himself and that broke my heart. I was already weak, but I thought my family had my back. I thought they would carry me to safety, and we would all get away together. I never could have imagined how wrong I was.I called out for them. I called out for her-Maddie- as I lay bleeding on the ground.Maddie not only was my best friend but my sister. The five of us were family but she and I were closer than the others. I took care of her, and she took care of me.She snuck me food when I was starving due to experiments, and I always cleaned her wounds from the fights she fought.Maddy was the perfect soldier and from the conversations I overheard; she was the one.She was the one they wanted. The
The night air is cold; we have been walking for hours. My stomach grumbles and I know Lila is hungry too. She wanted to go back for the bags, but that was the direction Colt’s SUV had gone; it was too dangerous. “I am so tired,” Lila groans. I sigh as I look around. I zone in my hearing and hear running water, “Lila, I think we are close to water.” She looks at me, “So?” “I need to cover my scen.”I start but she won’t understand, “We need to get muddy. We need to go through the water and then cover ourselves in mud.” She looks at me disgusted, “Is that really necessary?” she asks. I nod, “Yes, it will help keep us safe, I promise.” She sighs and I pull her toward the sound of the water, “We can wait to cross till the morning. We can’t sleep wet; we could get hypothermic.” I look over and see a hollow of trees and a stream; this is perfect. Secluded yet open. She agrees with me, but I can tell she is questioning everything I am saying. We were all schooled in house at the orphana
Tall buildings and a city are where my dreams take me tonight. I search for some sort of landmark or sign, anything to help me. Finally, there it is Denver, Colorado. I sigh in relief. Once we get there, I can send a signal out for him to find me. I will get Andy back and we can figure out what to do.BOOM! Thunder crashes above and I hear Lila scream, “Maddie!” she grabs my arm. I push myself and her further under the tree but it’s now pouring, and the branches are little help. Lila’s teeth begin to chatter, and I sigh, scooting closer to her, trying to warm her, “Maddie, I am so cold.” She breathes out sporadically.I rub her arm, “I know, it’ll be ok. I can find shelter.”She stares at me, “How? You can’t go out there in this!” she says, looking at the puddles that are forming on the ground around us. We are both soaked, and our clothes stick to our bodies.“Lila, we need to get warm. Our fire went out and this tree is useless,” I say looking up, I feel like I am yelling because
It has been years since I have fought in wolf form, hell. It has been years since I have fought in human form. This is what I was trained for! Colt won’t take me down without a fight! The dust begins to settle and dark grey eyes stare at me. Growls are heard and echo through the barn as four massive wolves dig their paws into the straw as water drips down their fur, but none of them are Colt. What the hell is going on?I bare my teeth and push Lila back with my body, protecting her. I can hear her crying in terror. I don’t know if she’s afraid of me. I am sure this is a shock, but I am not the danger. I whine at her as the grey-eyed wolf steps forward. He looks into my eyes and whines, but I don’t understand. He looks at his companions and steps back, shifting back into human form.He looks at me and then at Lila, “I am Alpha Caleb, why are you on my lands?” his voice booms with authority.Thunder crashes and Lila screams. I take a step forward growling and he takes another step back,
We follow Alpha Caleb, and the rain slowly begins to stop. The earth is wet and soon we leave the field of long grass and head into the forest. Mud sticks to my paws and I pick them up higher, flinging it behind us.Growling is heard behind me, and I turn back to find Alpha Caleb’s three pack members, covered in mud. Lila laughs loudly and I whine, apologizing. I just wanted it off my paws, I didn’t mean to hit them.Caleb turns around and looks at the commotion and I can see his body begin to shake and wiggle as he laughs too. I don’t feel as bad anymore and he picks up his pace, looking up at the moon. I know the sun will begin to come up soon, but he seems to be in a bigger hurry to get home now.I follow behind him closely until we come to a large metal fence. Signs are posted all around it- DANGER ELECTRIC FENCE.I whine at Caleb, and he pushes his head up, pointing toward a gate near the end. I look behind me and we are still being flanked but now my anxiety picks up. The last t
Colt POVI am doing well at hiding my hate right now for my handler. It wouldn’t matter if I showed him how truly disgusted, I am with him- he wouldn’t care. These men are taught we are nothing but assets. We may look human, but we aren’t, and we don’t deserve to be treated as such.I once heard the big man tell one, “They turn into wolves! Where do dogs come from!? Wolves, right? Treat them like the animals they are!” They helped make us, so they own us.I know Maddie is alive, but I don’t know where she is, and I don’t know what I am feeling toward her. I have always loved her, but this is a different feeling. These feelings are romantic. It’s not the simple feelings I used to have for her- this love is different. My wolf howls inside and I sigh, still longing for her.We killed so many souls tonight and learned nothing. When my handler lit the orphanage on fire and the children screamed, I wanted to help them; to save them but I am still just a puppet and there was nothing I could
Alpha Caleb smiles at Lila and me as we walk upstairs, “Now this is the room you girls will share. There are two beds but if anyone asks, you are mates.” Lila looks at him and before she can ask, he finally answers her question. “Werewolves have fated mates. It’s something the moon goddess does for you. Your fated mate is made for you and its true unconditional love.”Lila gasps and I smile- that does sound really nice.“Everyone has a fated mate?” I ask. Alpha Caleb nods, “Yes but sometimes you don’t find them so you can choose a different mate or if your mate dies or rejects you, it’s the same, you are free to choose.”“How do you know you find your fated mate?” Lila asks, confused. It’s a good question.Caleb sighs, “Well, I haven’t found mine yet but it’s a pull and a longing. Your wolf is so happy, and you feel what we call a bond. You want to be with one another, no matter what.”“But you said sometimes, there’s rejection.”Caleb looks sad for a moment, but his smile comes back
Colt POVThe town is old and small. There is only one grocery store, and my handler pulls up to the front of the building, “If this guy doesn’t want to help, we make him. You understand?” he asks me, holding up the cattle prod. I nod and we get out of the car. My shoes crunch into the gravel and look down, wondering if Maddie’s did the sameWe walk into the store and the bell dings as an older man comes out from a door behind the counter. I can already smell Maddie and my wolf howls inside, “How can I help you gentleman?” he asks, “We are about to close in 10 minutes.” I stand still and let my handler do the talking. My handler flashes his perfect smile, “Yes, we found groceries in a red wagon down the road.” He says, fishing the receipt out of his pocket. The store owner puts his glasses on and looks at the items on the paper, “Oh, the wagon was alone? It should have had two girls with it. They had done shopping for the orphanage keeper down the road.”My handler gasps, “Is that so?!
