I had been staring at the same page of my book for forty minutes when Damien walked past the library door, stopped, backed up, and looked at me.

“Have you eaten today,” he said.

“It’s ten in the morning.”

“That’s not an answer.”

I put the book down. “I had coffee.”

He looked at me the way he did sometimes, like he was deciding something, and then he said “come on” and walked away. I sat there for a second wondering if I was supposed to follow him and then I got up and followed him because

  • Worth Every Million   Chapter 25

I wake up smiling. I notice it before I am even fully awake, my face already doing something on its own, and I lie there in the white linen of the villa bedroom and I let myself have it without pulling it apart. I know why I am smiling. I do not need to examine it. I get up and shower and go downstairs and Damien is already in the kitchen. He has his back to me and there is something on the pan that smells good and I stop in the doorway. “Since when do you cook,” I say. He does not turn around. “Rosa left everything out. I did not want it to go to waste.” “You could have just left it,” I say. “I was hungry,” he says. “Sit down.” I sit at the kitchen table and watch him move around the kitchen and there is something almost funny about it. This man who has a driver and an assistant and a building that straightens when he walks into it, standing in a tiny Italian kitchen in yesterday’s shirt making breakfast because he did not want things to go to waste. “What are you making,” I

  • Worth Every Million   Chapter 24

The car turns off the main road and onto something narrower and I sit up straighter in my seat. We have been driving for about forty minutes since we left the airport and the whole time I have been watching Italy go past the window and trying to absorb the fact that I am actually here. That this is actually happening. The hills, the light, the way the late afternoon sun sits on everything like it has nowhere else to be. I grew up looking at pictures of this place in magazines and on other people’s social media and thinking one day and one day kept not arriving and now I am in a car on a narrow road in Italy and I still cannot fully believe it. Then the car stops. The driver says something in Italian and Damien says something back and the door opens and I get out and I look up and my mouth falls open. The villa is old. Not old in a neglected way, old in the way of something that has been loved for so long it has settled into itself completely. Whitewashed walls with climbing plants

  • Worth Every Million   Chapter 23

I have been thinking about the woman I was a month ago. Not with sadness exactly. More with the particular disorientation of looking at a photograph of yourself from years ago and not fully recognising the person in it even though you remember being her. I remember being that woman. I remember what she thought about when she woke up in the morning and what she worried about when she could not sleep and what she told herself about her life and the man she had built it around. She thought she had it right. She was so certain she had it right. I sit on the edge of my bed in the morning light and I think about Nora Lawson three months ago. Waking up in the house she had painted herself, in the bed she had made with clean sheets because she wanted everything to be nice when Daniel came home, planning a cake she would spend all afternoon making for a man who was already somewhere else. She was trying so hard. She was giving everything she had to something that was already over and she h

  • Worth Every Million   Chapter 22

I call my lawyer at eight in the morning. I have been thinking about it since I woke up. Not agonising over it, not going back and forth, just sitting with the decision that has been sitting with me for weeks now and recognising that I have already made it and the only thing left is to actually do it. My lawyer is a woman named Patricia who I found two years ago when Daniel and I were updating our wills and who I called again when all of this started because I needed someone on my side who knew what they were doing. She picks up on the third ring and I tell her I want to file for divorce and I want the papers drawn up and sent to Daniel today. She asks me if I am certain. I tell her yes. She tells me she will have everything ready by noon. I hang up and sit on the edge of my bed for a moment and wait to feel something dramatic. Some wave of grief or doubt or the particular vertigo of doing something you cannot undo. I sit there and wait for it and what comes instead is just a ki

  • Worth Every Million   Chapter 21

Daniel shows up on a Friday afternoon without warning. I am in the library when Claire comes to find me with an expression on her face that is professionally neutral in a way that tells me something has happened. She says there is someone downstairs asking for me and security is holding him at the front desk and Mr. Voss would like to know what I want to do. I already know who it is before she says the name. I go downstairs. Damien comes with me. I do not ask him to, he just falls into step beside me in the elevator and neither of us says anything on the way down. Daniel is standing at the front desk with his coat on and his hands in his pockets and the particular expression he wears when he has decided something and come to deliver it in person. He looks at me when the elevator opens and then he looks at Damien beside me and something crosses his face. “I need to talk to you,” he says to me. “Alone.” “No,” I say. He looks at Damien again. “I am talking to my wife.” “We are s

  • Worth Every Million   Chapter 20

I wake up thinking about his hand on my face. Not in the way I woke up thinking about his arm against mine after the Alderton dinner. That was something I was embarrassed about and pushed away before I had fully processed it. This is different. I lie there in the morning light and I think about it directly and I let myself think about it and I do not try to file it away somewhere manageable. He put his hand on my face and I closed my eyes and I did not tell him to go. I am not ready. I meant that when I said it. But not ready and not wanting are two completely different things and lying here in the morning I know the difference between them very clearly. I get up. I shower. I stand in front of my wardrobe for longer than necessary and I pick something and I go to the kitchen. Damien is already there. He looks up when I walk in and I look at him and for about three seconds we just look at each other and everything from last night is right there in the room between us and neither
